Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In seven card stud, how are the cards dealt?

Answer: two down, four up, one down

Seven card stud is usually a limit game, meaning a player can only bet a certain amount during each betting round. The players are dealt two cards face down and one card face up. Then there is a round of betting. The next three cards are dealt face up, with a betting round between each card. The last card is dealt face down with a final round of betting.
2. Five card stud is played exactly like seven card stud. How are the cards dealt in five card stud?

Answer: one down, four up

The play for five card stud is just like seven card stud, except for the way the cards are dealt. Each player is dealt one card face down and one card face up. Then there's a round of betting. The next three cards are dealt face up with a round of betting between each card. Also, like seven card stud, this game is usually a limit game.
3. In stud high/low games, the pot is split between the player with the best (high) hand and the player with the worst (low) hand. What is the best low-hand a player can have?

Answer: A-2-3-4-5

In stud high/low, aces can be played either as a high card or a low card. Also, straights and flushes do not count against a low hand. Low hands are typically eight or lower, meaning the highest card the player can have for a low is an eight. Therefore the best low hand in stud high/low is A-2-3-4-5.

This is sometimes the best high hand also, which would award the player the entire pot. If there is no low hand, the entire pot goes to the player with the best high hand.
4. Another common form of stud is lowball. Each player in lowball stud tries to make the lowest hand possible. A popular lowball game is razz. True or false: Aces are high in razz.

Answer: False

Razz is played just like regular stud except it is a lowball game. Aces are low in razz. Like stud high/low, the best low hand for razz is A-2-3-4-5. Also like stud high/low, straights and flushes do not count against the player. Unlike regular high/low, there is no limit for a hand. So if the player with Q-J-7-3-2 has the lowest hand, then they win the pot. Razz is also a limit game.
5. More often then not, stud is played with a bring in. What is the bring in?

Answer: The first bet.

The bring in is the first bet, which is usually half of a regular bet in limit stud. After the first three cards are dealt, the person with the lowest card showing must put in the bring in, whether they want to play the hand or not. Sometimes there are two players with the same low card.

In those cases, the bring in is determined by suit. In razz, the player with the highest card showing put in the bring in.
6. In seven card stud, a player must use all seven cards to make a hand.

Answer: False

In most stud games, players can only use five cards. For instance, if two players have the same two pair, then the winner is determined by the fifth card. So if player one has AAKK7, and player two has AAKKJ, then player two wins the pot. In rare cases, two players will have the same five card hand. The pot would be split in those situations.
7. What does it mean when a player is "rolled up?"

Answer: They were dealt three cards of the same rank for their starting hand.

A player who is rolled up was dealt three of a kind to start. This is a very good hand to start with. But remember, just because you start a hand rolled up does not mean you will win the pot.
8. You and your buddies are playing regular seven card stud. After all seven cards have been dealt, it's just you and one other person in the pot. You look down at your hand and see you have an ace high flush. You look at the other player's four up cards and see 5-7-7-8. All of the following are hands that could beat you EXCEPT:

Answer: A straight

Hand rankings in stud is just like that of hold 'em. From highest to lowest, the rankings are:

Royal flush
Straight flush
Four of a kind (or quads)
Full house
Flush
Straight
Three of a kind
Two pair
One pair
High card

Just because you only see one pair in the four up cards does not mean you have the other player beat. They still have three down cards that could blow your flush out of the water! So be careful if the other guy raises!
9. Another common form of stud is lowball. Each player in lowball stud tries to make the lowest hand possible. A popular lowball game is razz. You are dealt A-7-10-J-J-8-9. What is your best hand?

Answer: A-7-8-9-10

You best low hand is A-7-8-9-10. In razz, pairs count against the player, but straights and flushes do not. So if at all possible, do not include pairs in your low hand.
10. There are so many different stud variations. All of the following are variations of stud except:

Answer: 2-7 lowball

Mississippi stud is just like regular stud, except the cards are dealt differently. Each player is dealt two down and one up followed by a round of betting. Then, instead of one card, each player is dealt two cards face up followed by a round of betting. The next two cards are dealt face up with a round of betting between. So the player ends up with two cards face down and five cards face up.

Murder is played exactly like stud, except for one difference. If a player is dealt two up cards of the same rank (a pair showing), then that play has to either match the entire pot if he wants to keep playing, or fold. So if the pot has $20 in it, and you get dealt a pair showing, then you would either have to fold, or put $20 into the pot to keep playing.

English stud follows regular stud up until the fifth card. After the fifth card is dealt, players have the chance to discard one of their other cards and draw a new one from the deck. If the discarded card was face down, the new card would be dealt face down also. The same rule would go for face up cards. The game then continues like regular stud.

2-7 lowball poker is a variation of draw poker.
