Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You have been dealt "Big Slick". What two cards do you have as hole cards?

Answer: A-K

A hand with very strong potential in most variations of the game. Yet, this hand is often overplayed by inexperienced players. In a heads up showdown it is slightly weaker than a pocket pair of 2s - a surprising fact to many poker novices.
2. If someone is said to have "made a boat", what have they done?

Answer: Made a Full House

A very strong hand that is rarely beaten. If you make a boat you will be unlucky if it sinks and loses you the pot.
3. If someone is playing "on the button", what is he doing?

Answer: Playing that hand as the Dealer

The dealer chip or "button" is moved clockwise around the table after each hand to ensure that no player gets an unfair advantage with the blinds. Playing on the button is considered to be the best position at the table, since one is always last to act as the dealer.
4. You have "Pocket Snowmen". What on earth does this mean?

Answer: You have been dealt a Pair of Eights

8-8 is called snowmen purely because of their shape as with many nicknames given to starting hands.
5. An opponent has made a bet and you believe that you are "drawing dead" in the current hand. What would be your best course of action in such a situation.

Answer: Fold

"Drawing dead" means that you have absolutely no chance of beating your opponents hand, so you can only win by making him fold somehow. Since any other option would result in you losing chips, you should fold and get out cheaply.
6. Which starting hand is sometimes called "Motown"?

Answer: J-5

J-5 is sometimes called Motown in reference to the Jackson Five (J-5). A-8 is known as "Dead Man's Hand", 10-9 is known as "Countdown", and 7-7 is called "Mullets".
7. What is the "Nut"?

Answer: The best possible hand

If you have the nut, you cannot be beaten and, at worst, you will split the pot if anyone has exactly the same hand.
8. If you have been dealt "Cowboys", which hand would you LEAST like your opponent to have?

Answer: "Pocket Rockets"

"Cowboys" is K-K, the 2nd best starting hand. Only two Aces (Pocket Rockets) are better, and will usually beat K-K. "Crabs" (3-3), and "Fish Hooks" (J-J) are also great starting hands, but terrible against K-K. "Kojak" (K-J) is usually quite strong, but needs a miracle to beat two Kings.
9. What is the term used to describe a situation where a player has a strong hand but is deliberately acting like he has a weak hand?

Answer: Slow Play

The purpose of slow playing a very strong hand is to keep more players involved in a pot you are most likely going to win. In doing so, you hope that your opponents hands improve enough so that they keep betting or calling, but not enough to threaten your big hand. Ultimately you hope to maximize your winnings instead of scaring other players off with a big early bet.
10. In a "heads-up" encounter "Ducks" are better to have than "Marriage"?

Answer: True

"Ducks" is 2-2, and is a slight favourite against "Marriage" (K-Q) in a heads up (2 player) battle.
