Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The announcer: "Today's show is brought to you by the letter of the alphabet found on this card. It is the only card in the deck that can be either the highest ranking card or the lowest ranking card depending on the game. Which card and letter am I referring to?"

Answer: A for Ace

The announcer states, "It is A for Ace of course." He then explains that traditionally the Ace is the highest ranking card, followed by the King, Queen, Jack and then the numbered cards in descending value. In some hands and games the Ace is the lowest ranking card. Razz is such a game in which the Ace is the lowest ranking card. Sometimes the Ace can be both high and low as in Stud High-Low where it can play as both the highest and the lowest card.
2. Ernie (looking into the camera): "Okay kids there are four suits in a deck of cards. Can you tell me which two are red?"

Answer: Hearts and Diamonds

Ernie (still looking into the camera): "Hearts and Diamonds are traditionally red while Spades and Clubs are black. There are some four color decks in which each suit has its own color but these decks are not used in most standard poker games. In these decks Spades are black, Hearts are red, Diamonds are blue, and Clubs are green."
3. Bert to Ernie: "Hey, Ernie. What do you call the chips in the middle of the table? You know when I bet chips they are put in the _____. What word goes in the blank?"

Answer: pot

Ernie says: "Pot goes in the blank. The pot consists of the chips that are available to be won in a hand. It is likely that the word pot is a shortened version of jackpot. Normally one player wins the pot but it is possible to split the pot between one or more players if they share winning hands. This is especially true in high-low games, where both a high and a low hand can win."
4. Oscar the Grouch (being grumpy as usual) says to Big Bird: "I can't remember what 'Three of a Kind' is. Do you think the kids can help me out? Which of these is an example of 'Three of a Kind', kids?"

Answer: King of Clubs, King of Spades, King of Hearts

Big Bird answers: "'Three of a Kind' is three cards of the same rank. In most poker games hands rank as follows (highest to lowest):
Royal Flush
Straight Flush
Four of a Kind
Full House
Flush
Straight
Three of a Kind
Two Pair
One Pair
High Card"
5. Big Bird and Snuffleupagus are playing heads up. Snuffleupagus just made a bet. Big Bird says: "Okay I want to increase your bet but I forget what it is called. Can you remind me?"

Answer: Snuffleupagus answers: "It's named raising. You want to raise."

Snuffleupagus explains: "If you wish to increase the bet you are raising. Checking means to pass the action on your turn if no prior bets have been made. Folding and mucking both mean to drop out of the hand by throwing your cards away."
6. Cookie Monster (to the camera): "Okay kids. Which of these is NOT a type of poker?"

Answer: Blackjack

Cookie Monster continues: "That's right kids, Blackjack is a card game but it is not a form of poker. All of the other three are variations of poker. Texas Hold'em is probably the most common variation of poker played today and is certainly the most televised."
7. Elmo is the dealer and he declares that "Deuces are Wild". What does he mean by that?

Answer: Twos can be any card

The announcer states: "A Deuce is another name for the Two. It can also be called a Duck. The Three is called a Trey not a Deuce. Wild means the card can play as any card that will help your hand. For example, if you had Two Aces and a Deuce, the Deuce would count as a third Ace, giving you 'Three of a Kind'."
8. Snuffleupagus calls Big Bird's bet. What has Snuffleupagus done?

Answer: He has matched the amount of Big Bird's bet and put it in the pot

After a player bets you have three choices- call, raise or fold. To raise means to increase the bet. To fold means to give up the hand. To call means to match the bet.
9. Count Von Count says to Ernie: "Let's do some math. If there are 13 cards in each suit and there are four suits in a standard poker deck then there are 54 cards in a deck. Is that true or false?"

Answer: False

Count Von Count explains: "This is false. 13 times 4 equals 52 not 54. It would be 54 if you counted the Jokers which most decks come with but in most poker games the Jokers are removed prior to play."
10. Sherlock Hemlock is trying to solve another mystery kids and he needs your help. Do you know what the ante is?

Answer: The bet each player must put in the pot at the beginning of a hand

The ante is the first bet every player must put in to play the hand. It is a forced bet. Most of the time an ante is used to increase the action at the table by making every player have something at risk.
