Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a long poem about this captain's courtship following his landing in America on the Mayflower. Who was this famous Pilgrim?

Answer: Captain Miles Standish

Christopher Jones was the captain of the Mayflower and John Smith, of course, was the leader of the Jamestown colony in Virginia and was not with the Pilgrims in Plymouth. Billy Pilgrim was a character in Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughter House Five." Although there is also a folk duo named Billy Pilgrim based in Atlanta who adopted the name of the Vonnegut character in 1994.

Miles Standish was a historical personage who was elected first commander of the Plymouth militia in 1621. He was so effective a military leader that the militia continued re-electing him for the rest of his life.
2. Captain Woodrow F. Call and Captain Gus McCrae are a pair of retired Texas Rangers. Name this series of western novels by Larry McMurtry and their subsequent TV miniseries.

Answer: Lonesome Dove

The original novel won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was followed by "Streets of Laredo", "Dead Man's Walk", and "Comanche Moon." A four-part TV miniseries based on the novels was nominated for 19 Emmy Awards, winning seven.

The story line of "Lonesome Dove" follows a cattle drive undertaken by the two retired Texas Rangers, which bears strong similarity with a famous historical drive in 1866 by Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving.
3. Our next captain served in the Royal Navy in the Napoleonic Era. His commands included the HM sloop "Hotspur", the HMS "Atropos", and the HMS "Sutherland", before he became an admiral and eventually Commander-in-Chief of the West Indies. Name this C.S. Forester character who has been portrayed on the big screen by Gregory Peck.

Answer: Horatio Hornblower

Horatio Hornblower is the protagonist of eleven novels and five short stories written between 1937 and 1967 by C.S. Forester. Beginning with "The Happy Return", the series develops the character of Hornblower and includes a plethora of historical figures, all the way from a dozen admirals of the British navy to King George III of Britain, Napoleon III of France, Karl XIV Johan of Sweden, and Alexander I of Russia.
4. In which of the following musical productions would you find the captain whose stage character was inspired by former World War I U-Boat Captain Georg Johannes Ritter von Trapp?

Answer: The Sound of Music

As in "The Sound of Music", the actual von Trapp family did escape the Nazi takeover of Austria known as the Anschluss. Von Trapp and his family eventually reached America, although the movie concludes with the family making its way by foot through the Alps to freedom.

While "The Sound of Music" is actually a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, both "HMS Pinafore" and "The Pirates of Penzance" are two-act operas by Gilbert and Sullivan. "The Flying Dutchman", on the other hand, is a three-act German opera by Richard Wagner.
5. John Wayne played the role of Captain Nathan Cutting Brittles in a 1949 John Ford cavalry epic. What is the name of this film in which Captain Brittles advises Harry Caray Jr. as Lt. Pernell, "Never apologize, it's a sign of weakness."?

Answer: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

"She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" won a 1950 Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Like many classic westerns, it was filmed in Arizona's Monument Valley. It was the second of three films in what has been called Ford's "Cavalry Trilogy", following 1948's "Fort Apache" and being followed by 1950's "Rio Grande." All three films starred John Wayne.
6. What was the name of the US Army Ranger captain played by Tom Hanks in "Saving Private Ryan", who led a detail following D-Day to find a soldier who had lost three brothers to the war?

Answer: John H. Miller

The Wiki biography of the fictional Captain Miller relates that before the war he was a high school English teacher and baseball coach in Pennsylvania. Prior to D-Day he saw action as a Ranger in North Africa and at Anzio.
7. Hal Linden played the title character in an eight-season-long ABC sitcom about a NYC police station in Greenwich Village. Detective Wojciehowicz (Max Gail) and Sergeants Fish (Abe Vigoda), Harris (Ron Glass), Yemana (Jack Soo), Amanguale (Gregory Sierra), and Dietrich (Steve Landesberg) made up an eclectic cast. Which captain and show title is the correct answer?

Answer: Barney Miller

All four answers are title characters from television crime dramas. Only Barney Miller was a captain in the show's first season, although Nash Bridges was promoted to captain from inspector in his show's fourth season. In that series Don Johnson starred as Bridges, along with Cheech Marin, as inspectors in the Special Investigations Unit of the San Francisco Police Department. Burt Reynolds played Dan August, a homicide investigator in a fictional California city.

He was a lieutenant. William Shatner starred as T.J. Hooker, a former plainclothes detective sergeant who returned to duty as a "beat cop" for a more hands-on approach to crime prevention.
8. Who was the unfortunate captain of the SS Minnow, who was shipwrecked on Gilligan's Island during a scheduled three-hour tour?

Answer: Jonas Grumby

Also known as "the Skipper," Jonas Grumby was played in the TV series "Gilligan's Island" by veteran actor Alan Hale, Jr. Sadly, he passed away in 1990, becoming the second of the seven regular cast members to do so. Jim Backus, who played Thurston Howell, III, left us the year before.
9. This superhero first appeared in comic book form in 1941 under the aegis of Timely Comics. Since then he has become a leading figure in the Marvel Comics universe. Who is this hero who was the alter ego of Steve Rogers?

Answer: Captain America

Steve Rogers was the original Captain America, even going back to the Revolutionary War Era, according to Marvel Comics. However, with the death of Rogers, his former sidekick, James Buchanan Barnes became the new Captain America. Ten other incarnations have also appeared over time, including a Black Captain America (Isaiah Bradley). Five other Captain Americas have also appeared in alternate universes, including three women in the forms of Danielle Cage, Roberta Mendez and Samantha Wilson.
10. Which of the following musical captains is actually named Daryl Dragon?

Answer: Captain and Tennille

Daryl Dragon began playing the keyboard with Toni Tennille's musical show, "Mother Earth", in 1972. When her show closed, she sang for a year with the Beach Boys, for whom Dragon played keyboard. Following the end of that tour, Dragon and Tennille began performing as a duet under the name, the Captain and Tennille. They also signed a contract to record for A&M Records. They married in 1975 and continued performing together until 2014, when they divorced, largely due to Dragon's health issues.

Captain Sky is the stage name of musician and singer Daryl L. Cameron. Captain Beyond was a four-man progressive hard rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1971. Captain Stubby (Tom C. Fouts) and the Buccaneers was a nine-man midwestern comedy and country band who played from the 40s to the 60s.
