Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Played by Larry Hagman, Captain Tony Nelson was an American astronaut who made a magical discovery when his spacecraft came to earth far away from its intended landing spot. Which late-Sixties sitcom was this, which co-starred Barbara Eden?

Answer: I Dream of Jeannie

"I Dream of Jeannie" had a run of five seasons, from 1965 to 1970. In 1978 Hagman, son of actress Mary Martin, began a stint of 357 episodes of CBS's prime time soap opera "Dallas", playing the role of J.R. Ewing. "Dallas" was on the air from 1978 to 1991.
2. One of my favorite TV captains as I was growing up had a children's show which ran from 1955 to 1984. This captain had wonderful friends such as Mr. Green Jeans, Bunny Rabbit, Mister Moose, Dancing Bear, and Grandfather Clock. Who was he?

Answer: Captain Kangaroo

Captain Kangaroo was the brainchild of Bob Keeshan, who created and played the captain. Keeshan was also the original Clarabell the Clown on the "Howdy Doody Show" from 1947 to 1952. Bob Keeshan died at age 76 in 2004.
3. Daniel J. Travanti played Captain Frank Furillo on a ground-breaking NBC police drama which ran from 1981 to 1987. Name the series that featured the nightly admonition, "Let's be careful out there."

Answer: Hill Street Blues

Michael Conrad played the role of Sgt. Phil Esterhaus, who conducted the roll call at the beginning of each episode for the first three years. It was Esterhaus who cautioned the departing officers at the end of each roll call with "Let's be careful out there." He won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in each of the first two seasons. Sadly, during the fourth season, Conrad passed away from urethral cancer.
4. Which of the following surgeons on TV's "M*A*S*H" was NOT a captain?

Answer: Frank Burns

Frank Burns was a major. Among the other major characters, Henry Blake was a lieutenant colonel and his replacement, Sherman Potter, was also a colonel. "Hot Lips" Houlihan was also a major, as was Burns' replacement, Charles Emerson Winchester. Radar O'Reilly and Max Klinger were both corporals, and Father Mulcahy began the series as a first lieutenant, but finally earned his captain bars after several attempts at promotion.
5. "F Troop" was a short-lived ABC sitcom about an incompetent company of U.S. Cavalry stationed at Fort Courage in the Wild West of the 1860s. Veteran actors Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch handled most of the comedy, but the role of the commanding officer was played by Ken Berry. What was the name of Fort Courage's commanding captain?

Answer: Wilton Parmenter

One of the running gags in "F Troop" was Parmenter's clumsiness, which was an inside joke reflecting the fact that Ken Berry was an accomplished dancer. But the bulk of the comedy was handled by the antics of Tucker and Storch as Sergeant O'Rourke, a military con man, and Corporal Agarn, his dimwit sidekick.

Equally comedic as Tucker and Storch were the residents of a small village which made up the entire Native American tribe known as the Hekawi. Tapping into the theory that Native Americans constitute a lost tribe of Israel, the tribe got its name from an old joke answering the question, "What is the name of the Lost Tribe?" The answer being, "Where the heck are we?", i.e., "We're the Hekawi."

"F Troop" only ran for two seasons. It was filmed in black-and-white in season one and in color in season two.
6. Which of the following "Star Trek" captains is correctly matched with his/her command?

Answer: Benjamin Sisko - Deep Space Nine

Kirk commanded the Enterprise in the original television series (1966-69) as well as in the six feature films featuring the original crew. Jean-Luc Picard was the captain of a new Enterprise-D in the second "Star Trek" TV series (1987-94), called "The Next Generation." The third TV series (1993-99), "Deep Space Nine," featured Sisko as the captain of a space station, rather than a starship. Janeway, played by Kate Mulgrew, was the captain of the Voyager, which was also the title of the fourth series (1995-2001). Scott Bakula played Archer, who also commanded the Enterprise in the fifth series (2001-05), called "Star Trek Enterprise."

The "Excelsior" was captained by Hikaru Sulu in a feature film, "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country."
7. And now for a female captain. Played by Amanda Tapping, who is the astrophysicist and Air Force captain who joined SG-1 in season 1 and was a main character for the entire ten-year run of "Stargate SG-1"?

Answer: Samantha "Sam" Carter

Carter began the series as a captain, although she was promoted to major in season 3 and to lieutenant colonel in season 8, whereupon she assumed command of SG-1 for the rest of that season.
8. Our next captain solved mysteries in a cartoon version of "Charlie's Angels." His angels were known as "the Teen Angels." Who was this hair-covered individual whose main weapon was a huge club?

Answer: Captain Caveman

Forty eleven-minute episodes of "Captain Caveman" were made for use in "Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics" in 1977 and "Scooby's All-Stars" in 1978, before getting its own half-hour show in 1980.

The figure of Captain Caveman was drawn without clothes except for an orange cape with large black spots and a body covered with long hair from which he pulled various objects. Extending from his hair were a large nose and bare arms and legs. His club enabled him to fly, as well as supplying useful tools.

"Alley Oop" was a newspaper cartoon caveman who inspired an early Sixties pop song, but he was never called a captain. Captain K'nuckles was a villain in a TV cartoon series beginning in 2008 on the Cartoon Network called "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack."
9. Captain Adam Greer (Tige Andrews) oversaw the crime-fighting efforts of young undercover cops Pete Cochran, Linc Hayes, and Julie Barnes in what ABC crime series that ran from 1968-73?

Answer: Mod Squad

Andrews was born Tiger Andrews to Syrian parents. He was wounded in Sicily during World War II. Prior to five seasons as Adam Greer in "Mod Squad", he played Lieutenant Johnny Russo for the three-season run of "The Detectives" from 1959 to 1962. His Greer role earned him both an Emmy and a Golden Globe nomination. He passed away in 2007.
10. Joe Flynn played a US Navy captain charged with riding herd on Ernest Borgnine as Lieutenant Commander Quinton McHale and his misfit PT-boat crew in the sitcom "McHale's Navy." What was the name of Flynn's character, which he shared with a university in New York's SUNY system?

Answer: Captain Wallace Binghamton

"McHale's Navy" was inspired by and based on "The Phil Silvers Show", although the latter was set in the Army. Both shared a lot of elements with the later "F Troop," but without the Indians, of course.

"McHale's Navy" also spawned three feature films.

Vanderbilt University is located in Nashville, Tennessee.
