Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Car Talk" is hosted by two brothers, who broadcast under the monikers of 'Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers.' What are their real names?

Answer: Tom and Ray

Tom and Ray Magliozzi are the mechanics responsible for the weekly radio show and newspaper column. They are both graduates of MIT and former teachers.
2. What is the name of the segment of the show where the brothers call back a former caller and ask if their advice worked?

Answer: Stump the Chumps

"Car Talk" is not actually broadcast live. Potential callers leave a message with an answering service and are contacted if their problem seems interesting enough to be on the air. The brothers have no prior knowledge of the issue, as that might result in their having to do research and other work beforehand.

They will sometimes call back previous callers to see if their advice was helpful. Once, a caller claimed their suggested repairs caused his car to catch fire.
3. What city is "Car Talk" based out of? (Our fair city...)

Answer: Cambridge, MA

The show's offices are located at the corner of JFK and Brattle Streets, on Harvard Square. The company that produces "Car Talk" really is called Dewey, Cheetham, and Howe.
4. "Car Talk" isn't all about radio. There's also an animated TV show on PBS. What's the name of the show?

Answer: As the Wrench Turns

"Click and Clack's as the Wrench Turns" features the two brothers running a Boston garage, with zany employees and strange customers.
5. The hosts also did guest voices on another cartoon television show, as themselves. Which show?

Answer: Arthur

In an episode of "Arthur," Arthur's father is so annoyed by a persistent rattle that he's ready to get rid of the family car. When Arthur calls "Car Talk", Tom and Ray are able to diagnose the problem: a baby rattle wedged under the seat.
6. For radio hosts, these guys sure do a lot of visual works. Which well-known Pixar movie featured the brothers' voices?

Answer: Cars

Tom and Ray played Dusty (a '63 Dodge Dart) and Rusty (a '64 Dodge van), the Rust-eze brothers. They produce Rust-eze, an embarrassing product Lightning McQueen is forced to shill for. The die-cast toys have license plates that read 'R FAIR CITY.'
7. What is the name of the "Car Talk" them song?

Answer: Dawggy Mountain Breakdown

It was written and performed by David Grisman, on the banjo. The three halves of "Car Talk" are usually punctuated with wacky, car-themed songs.
8. "Car Talk" has had its share of calls from exotic locations: a convict calling from prison, a researcher calling from Antarctica, and a soldier calling from Iraq. Astronaut John Grunsfeld probably wins the award for long distance calling. Where did he phone the show from?

Answer: From outside of Space Shuttle Atlantis.

In 1997, Grunsfeld phoned the show to complain about his government vehicle, which had great acceleration, but died completely after a few minutes. He was calling from 700 miles above Hawaii.
9. What year was "Car Talk" first broadcast?

Answer: 1977

"Car Talk" began as a college radio program in Boston. By 1980, they were actually getting paid.
10. How do the brothers generally sign off from their show?

Answer: Don't drive like my brother!

The brothers usually sign off with a list of the "Car Talk" staff, including the silly made up names: Our personal makeup artist is Bud Tugly, guest accommodations are provided by the Horseshoe Road Inn. They then both remind listeners 'Don't drive like my brother.'

Thanks for playing. And even though players head for the nearest Foreign Legion recruitment office when they hear me say it, this is Funtrivia.
