On the television series which aired from 1978-1982 the lead character portrayed by the late Bill Bixby was named Dr. David Banner. The reasoning behind this was that the shows executives wanted to distinguish themselves from the comic book.

A lawyer in Manhattan's rough and tumble "Hell's Kitchen" by day, Matt Murdoch becomes Superhero Daredevil at night. Making his debut in 1964 our hero wore a yellow and black outfit for six issues before taking on the familiar red duds. He made it to the big screen in 2003 and remains one of the top comic book heroes to this day.

"Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" told the story of a fifty-something Bruce Wayne who had not portrayed the persona of The Batman in almost a decade. Gradually certain events take place which persuade Wayne to once again take up the cape and cowl. The story was a tremendous success and paved the way for the 1989 Tim Burton film starring Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton.

Marvel's "Secret Wars" storyline ran from May 1984-April 1985 and also had an accompanying line of action figures which are highly sought after on the collector market. Secret Wars was the first appearance of the famous black suit worn by Spiderman, which eventually turned out to be a living symbiote.

Another plot twist was that Benjamin Grimm aka The Thing discovered on this world he was finally able to transform between his human and superhero form at will. Grimm had long felt outcast because of his physical deformity and chose to remain on the planet with She Hulk temporarily replacing him in The Fantastic Four.

Edward Nigma who made his first appearance in 1948 is one of "The Caped Crusader's" oldest and most persistent adversaries. The popularity of this character crossed over into the 1966 Batman television series where the villain was famously portrayed by John Astin and Frank Gorshin.

Many consider The late Frank Gorshin to be by far the superior portrayal of the villain with his famous laugh. In 1995 The Riddler made it to the big screen in "Batman Forever" where the then-red-hot actor Jim Carrey created an absolutely over-the-top character.

Making his first appearance in 1964, Sergei Kravinoff is a fierce hunter and fighter who frowns upon conventional weapons, preferring to use his hands to defeat his foes. In reality Kravinoff is the half brother of another Spiderman villain, The Chameleon.

Jason Todd, the second person to wear the mantle of Robin was killed off in a four part mini series entitled "Batman: A Death in the Family". Introduced in the DC Universe in 1983, Todd's popularity never caught on with fans and as a result of a fan poll, was killed. Todd was subsequently brought back many years later.

Wilson Fisk was born and raised in Manhattan and eventually became the second in command of a vast criminal empire controlled by Don Rigoletto. After killing Rigoletto and assuming command himself, The Kingpin as he is known as, has wreaked havoc in the Marvel Universe for years. The Kingpin is a notorious enemy of both Daredevil and Spiderman.

Frank Castigilione aka Frank Castle was a former U.S. Marine who had served a tour in Vietnam and now was married and raising a family. Then one sunny day in Manhattan's Central Park the family witnessed a Mafia killing and were brutally gunned down. Although his wife, son and daughter died; Castle survived and swore revenge as "The Punisher".

Although many compare him often to DC's Batman, there is a significant difference as Batman will not use lethal force and "The Punisher" does not have a issue with that.

Pilot Hal Jordan received his Green Lantern ring from the dying alien Abin Sur after Sur's spacecraft crashed on Earth. Realizing he was close to death Sur had the ring seek out a successor and it chose Hal Jordan for his bravery and honesty.

While a villain in The DC Universe and an enemy of The JLA Solomon Grundy is not a frequent nemesis of The Batman. Oswald Cobblepot is The Penguin, Jonathan Crane is The Scarecrow and Harvey Dent is the former Gotham City D.A. whose horrific injury turned him into the villain called Two Face.
