Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As a kid I enjoyed the "Casper, the Friendly Ghost" comics but who was Casper's cousin who also featured in these pages and was known as the "tuff little ghost"?

Answer: Spooky

Spooky's trademarks are his freckles, his derby hat and his Brokklynn accent. He has a girlfriend named Pearl whom he calls "Poil". Pearl is constantly trying to stop Spooky from scaring people. Because of his affections for Pearl Spooky tries but not very well.

He has developed the habit of scaring people when Pearl is not around or making it look like someone else has done it. The other three ghosts named above, Fatso, Stinkie and Stretch, form the Ghostly Trio in the same comic.
2. Mario is being held prisoner by ghosts in "Luigi's Mansion". Luigi races to his rescue and is aided in his quest by which of the following pieces of ghost catching equipment?

Answer: Poltergust 3000

"Luigi's Mansion" (2001) was the first game in the Mario franchise that was released for the Gamecube system. The ghosts in this game are aided by King Boo and manage to escape from the paintings owned by Professor E. Gadd to the mansion that Luigi wins in a lottery and spread themselves out over all five levels in the building.

They capture Mario when he goes to check the mansion out. There are a variety of ghosts here - portrait ghosts, boss ghosts and boos to name a few - and the methods needed to capture them will also differ. Luigi has to capture them all to rescue his brother.

The Poltergust 3000, which resembles a large vacuum cleaner, was invented by the professor. All the other items named above are tools of the "Ghostbusters" from the 1984 film of the same name.
3. In the 1937 film "Topper", Cary Grant's character is haunted by ghosts.

Answer: False

Cary Grant's George is one of the ghosts. He and his wife Marion, played by Constance Bennett, are killed when their sports car hits a tree. Up to this point they'd lived lives without any responsibilities. To put it another way, they hadn't done anything that was good nor had they done anything that was bad. End result, they hadn't done anything to warrant a place in either heaven or hell and return to Earth as ghosts until they do.

They then decide that they should spice up the life of a wealthy but extremely stuffy bank president in Cosmo Topper (played by Roland Young) with hilarious results.

The film would end up being a box office hit which made Cary Grant very happy because he'd signed on for the gig for a percentage of the takings.
4. In the DC Comics universe Gentleman Ghost is a member of which affiliation?

Answer: The Secret Society of Super Villains

Jim Craddock is the son of a fine English gentleman who terrorises 1800s England as a notorious highwayman. He escapes to the United States when things get too hot for him and immediately runs into two gunslingers in Nighthawk and Cinnamon. Nighthawk hangs Jim when he thinks that the Englishman has made improper advances on Cinnamon and leaves him for dead. Craddock manages to escape the clutches of death but only by returning to Earth as a ghost.

He soon finds out that the only way he can find peace is if the souls of his killers move onto the next plane of existence.

This all sounds simple enough. Problem is that his killers are the reincarnation of a couple of Ancient Egyptian rulers in Prince Khufu and his wife Chay-Ara. The other problem is that they'd been exposed to a magical metal called nth which has anchored their souls to the realm that they're in. Nighthawk and Cinnamon are eventually killed by Matilda Roderic, who is the reincarnation of an evil Egyptian priest, but return to life as Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Naturally Gentleman Ghost becomes their evil nemesis.
5. In the television series "The Ghost & Mrs Muir", what was the former occupation of the ghost played by Edward Mulhare?

Answer: Sea Captain

Edward Mulhare plays the poltergeist Captain Daniel Gregg who haunts the Gull Cottage in Schooner Bay, Maine. He died by misadventure when he accidently knocked over the gas heater by his bedside and was overcome by the fumes. He could not rest because his death was incorrectly reported as a suicide and so spent the next hundred years scaring away potential buyers of the cottage. "The Ghost and Mrs Muir" ran on both NBC and the ABC from 1968 to 1970.
6. Which author wrote about the "Dead Men of Dunharrow"?

Answer: J.R.R. Tolkien

The "Dead Men" used to be known as the "Men of the Mountains" and are characters from Tolkien's Middle Earth. At the end of the Second Age they had given a vow to Ilsildur that they would provide him with assistance however, when the time came to take up arms against Sauron they backed out and hid in their mountains. Ilsildur cursed them and determined that these oathbreakers would not find peace until they had fulfilled their oath to himself or one of his heirs.

They then haunted the caverns of the "Haunted Mountain", Dwimorberg, until the closing of the Third Age when Aragorn (an heir of Ilsildur) called upon their aid in the War of the Ring.
7. Peter Ustinov plays the role of which recalcitrant pirate's ghost in a 1968 Disney comedy that also stars Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette?

Answer: Blackbeard

In "Blackbeard's Ghost" Steve Walker (Dean Jones) is the coach of the Godolphin's College track team, an extremely poor team at that. He boards at a place called Blackbeard's Inn run by two women descended from Blackbeard's former crew, runs foul of a local crime boss, steps on the toes of the college dean and catches the eye of a very attractive college professor played by Suzanne Pleshette. Oh, and he accidently conjures up Blackbeard's ghost who manages to add all sorts of mayhem to his already stressed out life. Blackbeard had been cursed by his tenth wife, Aldetha, a witch, to spend his eternity in limbo or until he performs a good deed.
8. In the British television series "Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)" ("My Partner is a Ghost" in the US) what is the occupation of the two titular characters?

Answer: Private Investigators

Jeff Randall and Martin "Marty" Hopkirk are investigating a case when Marty is killed by a hit and run driver. Marty returns immediately as a ghost and helps Jeff solve the mystery of his own murder. In the process Marty has stayed out of his grave for too long and is therefore cursed to remain on Earth as a ghost for the next 100 years. Launched in 1969 it originally starred Mike Pratt and Kenneth Cope as the respective detectives.

The series was remade in 2000, this time with comedians Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer in the title roles.
9. In the wonderful world of animation what is the name of the series that sees a young Danny Fenton have an accident that turns him into a half-ghost?

Answer: Danny Phantom

Danny's parents are ghost hunters who have created a portal between the real world and the "ghost zone". Spurred on by one of his friends Danny enters the portal and accidently turns it on. It ends up infusing Danny's DNA with ectoplasm, turning him into a half ghost.

While he's in the ghost zone he discovers that he has new powers - he can fly, can be invisible and he gains the power to possess people. Danny is voiced by the talented Danny Kaufman. The series was created by Butch Hartman for Nickelodeon and was first aired in 2004.
10. Bruce Springsteen proclaimed in the following lyrics in 1995 that he was waiting on the ghost of whom? "The highway is alive tonight - But where it's headed, everybody knows. I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light Waitin' on the ghost of _____".

Answer: Tom Joad

Whilst Springsteen sings of ghosts in many respects he is referring to the human spirit - constantly restless, constantly seeking, constantly looking for a way to make things better and rising above what it has. He uses Tom Joad, a character from John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath and John Ford's 1940 film of the same name, who travels with his family from the Oklahoma dustbowl of the Depression era to California in the hope of finding work, to personify this.
