Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One explanation for the legend of the Flying Dutchman is the Fata Morgana, a mirage that appears on the far horizon of the ocean. Where does the magical name Fata Morgana come from?

Answer: Morgan le Fay of Arthurian Legend

Fata Morgana is the Italian translation of Morgan le Fay. Morgan le Fay first appears in "Vita Merlini" by Geoffrey of Monmouth. In different incarnations she is either a fairy or fairy queen and a sorceress. She became linked to the island of Sicily through its association with Avalon. Many held that Sicily and Avalon were one and the same.

The name came to be applied to the mirage that forms on the horizon of the ocean. The effect can distort the image of a ship on the horizon whether it is truly in line of site or has dropped beyond the horizon. It causes the ship to appear ghostly or as if it is floating. Its appearance was viewed as a bad omen by ancient sailors.

2. "The Flying Dutchman" is a finishing move for Canadian professional wrestler Leah Vaughan. Without sounding "cheesy", by what name is this move better known?

Answer: The Moonsault

Vaughan, formerly known as Leah Von Dutch, made her in-ring debut as a 24 year old in 2011 against Cherry Bomb. The following year she was named by the website "DivaDirt" as one of the "Five to Watch in 2012" and she made her on-camera debut in 2013. By 2017, when she stopped to take a "break" from the game, she had accumulated five titles, including the XBW (Extreme Bombshells Wrestling) championships.

Among her finishing moves is the "Moonsault", which she has christened "The Flying Dutchman" as a play on her former name. In the move she uses the ropes as a springboard to launch into the air and do a backflip to land on her opponent.

The questioned was slammed into the turn-buckle for Phoenix Rising by pollucci19.
3. In 1997, Microsoft Studios released a real-time strategy computer game developed by Ensemble Studios. Several cheat codes were built into the game. What special advantage did "Flying Dutchman" confer to certain naval units?

Answer: Ability to travel over land

"Age of Empires" was a popular historical-based computer game focused on events between the Stone Age and the Iron Age. It spawned a series of successful sequels and spinoffs.

By typing cheat codes into the chat box, players could unlock a variety of special upgrades. "Flying Dutchman" converted all Catapult Trireme and Juggernaut units to Flying Dutchman units, though the three were indistinguishable by appearance alone. Flying Dutchman units were slightly more powerful and had the ability to travel over land and water.

4. In "The Pirates of the Caribbean" film series, The Flying Dutchman ship is almost a character by itself. Of the four movies from the franchise listed below, which gem of a movie does NOT feature the ship?

Answer: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

The original "Pirates" movie revolved around the ship the Black Pearl and did not feature the Flying Dutchman at all. The other three all featured the ship. In "Dead Man's Chest" the Flying Dutchman is captained by Davy Jones. In "At World's End", Davy Jones still captains the Dutchman but he is controlled by Lord Cutler Beckett. In the final showdown Jones is killed by Will Turner who then becomes captain of the ship. In "Dead Men Tell No Tales", Will Turner's son, Henry, dives down to the Dutchman in order to get his father to help him retrieve Trident of Poseidon and break the curse the ship and his father are under.

5. Is Fast Food entertainment? You betcha it is when it is on a secret menu. Which American fast food chain has a Flying Dutchman burger on its menu, (so to speak)?

Answer: In-N-Out Burger

They are unusual as their restaurants are owned by a single family and are not publicly listed or franchised. They only have a small menu - Three burgers, fries, shakes and soft drinks but there is a secret menu where you can order additional items. A Flying Dutchman is Two slices of cheese melted between two burger patties with no bun. You can have it "Animal Style" which means added are a measure of diced onions to the cheese. Pickles and spread (sauce) arrives on the side.

6. The Flying Dutchman attraction is a water coaster that forms part of the Efteling Amusement complex in which country?

Answer: The Netherlands

The story behind the ride was built upon the legend of Willem Van Der Decken, a wealthy trader who owned a very fast ship. His problem was that greed got the better of him and he recruited a crew made up of orphans and turned to piracy to boost his profits. He is confronted by a massive storm that is on the horizon as he prepares to sail for the Dutch East Indies. Standing firm, he declares that he doesn't fear God and is prepared to sail into eternity... he sails into damnation.

Before the ride proper begins, patrons will walk through the captain's abandoned house, make their way through the "smuggler's" tunnels, and catch glimpses of his stolen treasure before ending up at an English style pub. From there they make their way down to a fourteen-man barge. This is where the coaster ride proper begins. The barge heads out into open water toward a holograph of the ghost ship...

Answer: Bounty

10. In the Marvel Comics' universe The Flying Dutchman is introduced as a nemesis for which noble sky-rider?

Answer: The Silver Surfer

Captain Joost Van Straaten had no thought for life. His entire devotion was to greed, to such an extent, that he forced his crew into a hell-storm and he, the crew, and the ship perished. When they met with Death, Death allowed his crew to rest in peace but flung the captain and his soul into Limbo. Here, once the Dutchman pledged his allegiance, the evil Mephisto secured his escape, endowed him with power and a flying ship, and gave him the mission to crush the Silver Surfer. Despite having the Surfer at his mercy, the Dutchman realizes that he's on the wrong side and that by killing the Surfer he would never be at peace. He renounces his allegiance to Mephisto declaring he would rather spend eternity in Limbo than tread down this path. It's at this point that the Silver Surfer takes pity on him and allows him to join his crew in peace.
