Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chief Brandon receives a pamphlet from an old friend who runs a health farm in the Carolina mountains. He sends Dick Tracy there to recover from the poison gas he breathed during the Karpse story. He immediately runs into an ill tempered man named Wolley who leases part of the farm for hunting. Thanks to some investigation on the massage tables, Tracy realizes Wolley carries a gun in his robe. Clues: Sent to a health spa by his boss; ill tempered man; clues found out while on a massage table. Which novel that was made into two movies over 20 years later is this "Dick Tracy" story similar to?

Answer: Thunderball

While Tracy went willingly to the spa, James Bond certainly did not.
Tracy discovered Wolley carried a hidden gun in his robe because he threw a fit when an attendant tried to put it away during a shower.
Count Lippe threw a fit when the attendant wanted to remove his wristwatch during a massage, which led Bond to see the Chinese Tong tattoo underneath.
Later in Ian Fleming's "Thunderball", after Bond's initial shock of realizing his CIA partner in The Bahamas was his old friend Felix Leiter, Felix said, "When we get to our rooms Dick Tracy will tell all."
In this story, the ever suspicious Tracy follows Wolley on horseback to find out where he goes when he's supposedly hunting.
2. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Tracy follows Wolley and his buddies to an icy pond. Hidden in the pond is a water proof box on rails which they pull out and look into. After they leave, Tracy pulls the box out and finds it empty. He collects some dust from it, and runs tests on it from the field kit he carries. "First hydrochloric acid, then the nitric, then rhodanine. The solution turned violet!" What has Tracy found traces of in the dust from the box?

Answer: Gold

Dick Tracy now enlists the owner of the health farm, Pop Gainer to help him. Buying a movie camera, they set up wires around the pond which will turn the camera on when disturbed.
3. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Tracy finds his movie camera has recorded something around the icy pond. He and Pop Gainer review the film, which shows a man placing something in the watertight box. Soon thereafter the film is found burning in Tracy's room, and Pop begins acting suspicious. When confronted with Tracy's evidence, Pop Gainer admits he recognized the man in the film. Who is it he was trying to protect?

Answer: His son, Mickey

Mickey Gainer had put jewelery in the box. Tracy and Pop Gainer follow Wolley to the box, then back to the city, setting a wiretap on Wolley's telephone. Wolley contacts a jeweler to sell his stolen jewels. Tracy and Pop Gainer intercept the jeweler and inform him that Wolley is a thief, but Mickey Gainer is eavesdropping on their room. Mickey grabs the jewler after he leaves and takes him to Wolley, who tortures him until he talks.
4. In the "Dick Tracy" comic, Wolley and his gang take the jeweler to a dry stream beside the road, tie him to some poles, gag him, and put him--where?

Answer: In the culvert

Mickey Gainer is now having second thoughts. Back in town, he is met by his father Pop Gainer, who forces him to take him to where they put the jeweler. Wolley's gang has been watching, and follow. Just as he and his men are about to gun down the trio, Dick Tracy and crew arrive, having been tailing Wolley. (Doesn't anybody watch their backs?) Wolley does not turn out to be 'yellow' after all, and his gang is gunned down in the ensuing battle. Mickey Gainer crawls through the culvert to the other side of the road and escapes while the battle is going on.
5. Mickey Gainer is on the run in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. He knocks at the door of a garage and is met by a very strange looking man. His head looks a lot like a skull, with a jutting jaw, dark sunken eyes and a huge forehead, which is 'scarred all' over with acne. What is his name?

Answer: Scardol

This is Chester Gould's first true 'grotesque'.
Arguably, The Blank was the first. However, his face had been deformed by a shotgun blast, while Scardol was apparently 'born that way'.
Scardol is no more than a small time stick up man and takes Mickey in reluctantly.
6. Scardol has a nice gimmick for robbing filling stations in "Dick Tracy". He brushes glue water on his black car, then sprays it with cold water paint. After he robs a station, he returns to his garage and does what?

Answer: Sprays water on his car

The water washes the paint off, and his car is black again. During one robbery a policeman is killed, which puts Dick Tracy on Sacrdol's trail.
Mickey Gainer has no problem with robbery, but murder weighs heavily on his conscience.
Incidentally, during the first robbery, Scardol has bought gas. The attendant says, "There you are--five gallons will be ninety-two cents." You do the math.
7. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Scardol intentionally pulls a job in the rain which leaves a trail of paint for the police to follow. He has enlisted a man named 'Killer' to wait in his garage. When the police break in, Killer and Scardol open fire with tommy guns and kill everybody except Tracy and Pop Gainer, who is wounded. These two he takes to the new City Dam where 200 tons of cement are being poured every day. What does he plan to do?

Answer: Bury them in cement

With the help of the night watchman and Mickey Gainer's inability to kill his father, a fight breaks out and Tracy knocks Scardol down by the concrete forms which are ten feet high. Already weakened, the forms break and Scardol is buried beneath cement.
Mickey Gainer saves his father's life with a blood transfusion. Unknown to Pop, Mickey is married and has a child, who appear in the hospital. Mickey Gainer attempts suicide and escape before realizing he has to pay his debt to society before he can be free.
In the meantime, Mitzi's ex-husband 'Whip' Chute turns up but she leaves town with Pop Gainer and avoids confrontation. 'Whip' Chute and Frank Rellik parachute into the ocean and are rescued by the Rexloid, a cruise ship which is bringing two Bovanian princes to visit America. Holding the two princes up, they disguise themselves perfectly as the Bovanians and toss them out the porthole, where they are taken aboard by more of the Whip Chute gang.
8. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, two Bovanian princes are being held on a ship by Whip Chute's gang. With the coast guard coming to investigate the ship, the gang puts the princes in a large vat and chains them down, giving them a hose to breathe through before filling the vat with water. What is the last thing they put in the vat before the officers board their ship?

Answer: Used oil

The officers can't see through the oil, and the men on the ship claim to be having motor trouble and are soaking parts in the oil. Being under suspicion, they now must move the prisoners to land where they are now guarded by the only interesting character in the story. Lily, a middle aged, busty, kerchief wearing woman carries pistols by her side.
Junior Tracy disguises himself as a crippled orphan girl and plays on Lily's sympathy. She lets him spend the night and he steals her keys and sets the princes free.
9. In the "Dick Tracy" comic, Dick is suspicious of the two Bovanian princes. He has found enough evidence that Whip Chute may have the real princes in captivity, and is stealing jewels from the wealthy homes they are visiting. He discovers something about Whip Chute from his ex-wife Mitzi Gainer that makes him sure they are imposters. What has he found out?

Answer: Chute has an artificial leg

Lots of people disguised in this story. Tracy now disguises himself as a 'trouble maker' and kicks Whip Chute in the shin shouting "Down with royalty!" His kick makes a metallic sound and Tracy knows its Whip Chute in disguise, but he must find the real princes first.
When the real princes are freed by Junior, a note is passed to Chute and his pal, Frank Rellik while they are dining in a wealthy home. Rellik fakes a heart attack and tries to escape dressed as a woman. Chute flees to the rooftop.
10. The jig is up for Whip Chute and Frank Rellik in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. Rellik is disguised as a woman, but discovered and arrested by Tracy. Chute is attempting to escape by climbing down a theater sign, but police are waiting above and below. The sign breaks and Whip Chute plummets into the crowd below. What one word does the sign still flash after Whip Chute's drop?

Answer: Dead

The sign originally read Dead End Kiddies. Chester Gould had a way with the silent panel that no other cartoonist did. The panel that simply read "dead" said it all.
The princes offered Junior Tracy a trip around the world with them, but he turned them down because he and Tracy were going to a ballgame later in the week and also had a few picnics planned for the summer.
