Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Netflix animated show, called heartbreaking by critics, featured anthropomorphic characters coming to terms with life, depression, and the seeking of acceptance?

Answer: Bojack Horseman

"Bojack Horseman" stars Will Arnett, Alison Brie, Amy Sedaris, Paul F. Tomkins, and Aaron Paul amongst others, and features a mix of animated humans and animal who, in the show, are also essentially human and among us. The lead character, Bojack, is a former TV actor (of the hit '90s show 'Horsin' Around'), but in the present day he seeks fulfillment and acceptance, at the same time both intentionally and unintentionally pushing his closest friends away.

The show found critical acclaim in its second and third seasons, becoming one of the most poignant takes on depression on TV, despite being a show starring a horse.
2. What Netflix TV show starring Maria Bamford loosely reflects her own life and mental house issues experienced while filming ads for Target (named Checklist in the show)?

Answer: Lady Dynamite

Comedienne Maria Bamford starred as herself in this Mitchell Hurwitz-produced show on Netflix in 2015. Based loosely on her own life, Bamford moved from episode to episode facing sometimes unrealistic day-to-day struggles while reflecting on her mental breakdown only months earlier.

Although the show took her manic depression to a comedic extreme in many cases, it also developed the issues over a season of build-up, depicting deep troubles with a certain authenticity. The show was widely acclaimed and also starred Ana Gasteyer, Mo Collins, and Fred Melamed.
3. Which of these movies begins and ends with the depression-induced suicide of a famous novelist?

Answer: The Hours

"The Hours", starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and Julianne Moore, was released in 2002 and featured three women, all linked by Virginia Woolf's novel "Mrs. Dalloway", all coming to terms with their lives and their thoughts. While all three protagonists, each in different time periods (Streep in 2001, Moore in 1951, and Kidman as Woolf herself in 1941), deal with their depression and melancholy in different ways, only Woolf commits suicide, drowning herself in the River Ouse.

The movie was nominated for nine Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, only winning for Best Actress for Kidman's portrayal of Virginia Woolf. Michael Cunningham's original novel of "The Hours" won a Pulitzer Prize.
4. In what CW television show did main character Rebecca Bunch once suffer from a 'sexy, French depression'?

Answer: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Starring Rachel Bloom in the titular role, the show "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" follows a protagonist with a fair share of mental issues, effectively stalking an ex-boyfriend across the country, living in the same city as him, and picking up her life from there.

The show is punctuated by several musical numbers in an episode; 'Sexy French Depression', which is shot in black and white and features Bunch trying to cope with her feelings of rejection, is in the show's seventh episode. She later goes to therapy.
5. What mobster-driven HBO show received acclaim from the American Psychoanalytical Association for its depiction of depression?

Answer: The Sopranos

Starting in 1999, "The Sopranos" was a quick hit for HBO, putting James Gandolfini in the role of a lifetime as Tony Soprano. The show, while it featured many violent acts, placed a significant weight on Tony's own problems battling with depression, often placing him into the hands of his psychiatrist, Dr. Melfi, who helps him work through the recurrent bouts of clinical depression he faced despite his powerful position in the mob.

The show was critically lauded during and after its six season run.
6. What is the name of Allie Brosh's webcomic series and 2015 book, also subtitled 'Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened'?

Answer: Hyperbole and a Half

Allie Brosh started the "Hyperbole and a Half" blog in 2009, posting introspective stories and doodles from MSPaint to convey them to her audience. This came to somewhat of a head when, after suffering from a serious bout of depression and considering suicide, she took an indefinite hiatus.

Her stories were compiled and elaborated on in her 2013 book (featuring many stories about her childhood, life, and depressive episodes) which many regarded as one of the more thought-provoking views of millennial depression to be depicted.

Her success online has spawned several memes on internet message boards.
7. What AMC show set in the 1960s follows an advertising executive attempting to find happiness, but unable to find it in material and carnal pleasures?

Answer: Mad Men

Starring Jon Hamm and lasting seven seasons, "Mad Men" was a critical success in many ways and became somewhat of a cultural touchstone in the late 2000s/early 2010s due to its sophisticated presentation of the 1960s through the eyes of famous ad men.

The show gets their lavish lifestyles down to a T, but also shows Hamm's character, Don Draper, as he struggles to find happiness despite wealth, women, and access to all material goods. This, of course, affects everyone he comes into contact with.

The show did this while, at the same time, pushing through a lens of societal mores of the 1960s.
8. Frontman of the alternative rock band fun., Jack Antonoff, rebranded under the band name Bleachers in 2014, released what song about coming to terms with internal panic?

Answer: I Wanna Get Better

"I Wanna Get Better", the first single from Bleachers' debut album, "Strange Desire", ended up peaking at number one on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart; the album hit number eleven on the Billboard 200. The song, according to Antonoff, was created at a time where he needed to come to terms with the events of his life and seek happiness aside from the events beyond his control.

The music video featured Antonoff in a therapist's office; his therapist was played by Lena Dunham, then his girlfriend.
9. Which of these films was not a part of filmmaker Lars Von Trier's 'Depression Trilogy'?

Answer: Dogville

"Antichrist", "Melancholia", and "Nymphomaniac" were all vastly different films though melancholic overtones permeated all three, giving certain qualities to the atmospheres therein, even though they each fit into different genres altogether. "Melancholia", the second of the three, was a science-fiction drama about a planet colliding with Earth, for instance.
Aside from all three films featuring Von Trier's reflections on depression, all three also starred actress Charlotte Gainsborough.

"Dogville" preceded this trilogy by three years, actually starting off the director's 'Land of Opportunities' trilogy.
10. What AMC TV show based on the Danish series "Forbrydelsen" was set in rainy Seattle and followed a family dealing with the tragic murder of their daughter?

Answer: The Killing

One of the most melancholic crime shows out there, "The Killing" depicted pathetic fallacy unlike any other. Set almost entirely in a grey, rainy Seattle, the first two seasons teamed up Mirelle Enos and Joel Kinnaman as investigators looking into the murder of Rosie Larsen, a local high school girl.

While both detectives fought to keep their heads above water in the case and in their lives, the Larsen family had to cope with their loss as it tore their family apart. The murder was solved at the end of the second season before the show was canceled at the end of the third. Netflix picked it up for a fourth and final season in 2014.
