In "Gone with the Wind", Rhett Butler is originally from Charleston, however he is basically blacklisted from many of the social events there because of his bad reputation. His father has disowned him and he is not on speaking terms with his brother. Rhett is a very wealthy man, having earned his fortune through various means including gold rushes and gambling.

He is in love with Scarlett (who has multiple other beaus) and her desire to keep on living as the situation and her life becomes bleaker and bleaker near the end of the American Civil War.
