Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Producers" features the fictional musical "Springtime for Hitler." At the end, after the play has opened, the main characters Bialystock and Bloom are working on another musical that aptly describes their new life situation. What is its name?

Answer: Prisoners of Love

They expect "Springtime for Hitler" to flop so that they can keep all of the money from their investors. Since it is a hit and they cannot pay 25,000% in profits, they are sent to prison for fraud. Apparently they have not learned their lesson as, in the final scene, they are shown running the same investment scam as before, selling more profits than they can afford to pay for the prisoner-performed musical.
2. The townspeople of a Christopher Guest film put on a musical about their small town. They manage it with only a few actors. The result "Red, White, & Blaine" comes from which mockumentary?

Answer: Waiting for Guffman

The performers believe that their musical might go to Broadway if Guffman, a Broadway producer, sees it and likes it. The title is a parody of "Waiting for Godot," a classic absurdist play by Samuel Beckett. The outcome is the same in both stories: the characters wait for a man who never comes.
3. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor in "Moulin Rouge!" pitch an idea to The Duke for a musical so great that "it will run for fifty years." What do they call this most amazing show?

Answer: Spectacular Spectacular

The plot of the musical mirrors the plot of the movie: a courtesan (Satine, played by Kidman) falls in love with a penniless sitar player (Christian, played by McGregor) while being coveted by the evil maharajah (The Duke, Richard Roxburgh). The song in which they pitch the idea is set to Offenbach's "Galop Infernal" from "Orpheus in the Underworld," which is more popularly known as the "Can-can."
4. In a movie from 2008, a high school teacher tries to put on a sequel to which play by Shakespeare?

Answer: Hamlet

He tries to stage "Hamlet 2" as a musical featuring time travel and including Jesus as a character. Though some people try to derail the show, it ends up going to Broadway. "Hamlet 2" is the name of both the movie and the musical in the movie.
5. Bette Midler sings in a Broadway revue called "Sizzle '76" in which movie from the 1980s?

Answer: Beaches

"Sizzle" is a bawdy show in poor taste, though it makes Bette's character a major star. The film itself is about the friendship between two women who meet on a beach as children and, mainly through letters, remain friends for life.
6. Now we're moving on to fictional musicals in television. The musical "East Hastings" outshines the company's production of "King Lear" in which Canadian show?

Answer: Slings and Arrows

A theatre company known for their Shakespeare productions stages an original musical about whores and drug addicts. It outdoes the expected headliner "King Lear" and gets an extended run while "Lear" is cancelled due to the instability of the lead actor. "Slings and Arrows" ran for three seasons.
7. The characters of "The Muppet Show" usually perform existing songs, but they also have done original numbers. What swine-inspired opera do they put on when Beverly Sills is the guest star?

Answer: Pigoletto

Using Verdi music from operas like "Carmen" and "La Traviata," the pigs and Sills put on an opera with Miss Piggy as Cleopatra. At the end, they all sing "God Bless America." The title is a parody of "Rigoletto."
8. The game "3-Headed Broadway Star" from "Whose Line is it Anyway?" is the source of many made-up names for musicals and songs. Which is not the name of an unlikely musical on the show?

Answer: Oh Canada! The Musical

One of the performers, Colin Mochrie, is Canadian, so some of the show's jokes are about Canada, but this is not one of them. In the game, three of the players have to make up a song one word at a time, leading to some interesting songs when one of them says a word that doesn't quite follow from what the other person said.

In the song "You've Got Sole" from "My Favorite Shoe," Drew Carey forgot the one word limit and sang a whole line, making himself and the others crack up.
9. Animated shows are a great source of fictional musicals. Helga and Bob on "Hey Arnold!" go to see a musical whose title is a parody of a popular musical based on the works of a poet. What do they see?

Answer: Rats

As you might expect, "Rats" features actors in rat suits singing in a parody of "CATS." Helga and Bob think that the play is ridiculous and make catcalls all the way through. "Leslie's Miserable," "Sour Charity," and "The Elephant of the Opera" are titles I made up that parody, respectively, "Les Miserables," Sweet Charity," and "The Phantom of the Opera."
10. The "Rocko's Modern Life" episode "Popcorn Pandemonium" has a movie trailer for which musical about workers who decide they aren't going to work anymore?

Answer: Garbage Strike: The Musical

The musical is based on a book in their universe apparently, for Heffer remarks after the trailer, "The book was better." The rats in the movie trailer who go on strike appear at the end of the cartoon, refusing to clean up all of the popcorn "'cause we're on striiiike!" I made up the other titles.
