Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. She's the eldest daughter of Agnarr and Iduna. In the Disney movie she's in, an accident involving her sister leads to a perpetual winter for a fictional Norse kingdom. She's also adept at creating ice palaces. Name the character.

Answer: Elsa

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen", the 2013 Disney movie "Frozen" revolves around Elsa, heir-apparent to the monarchy of Arendelle following Agnarr and Iduna's demise in a shipwreck. In the 2019 sequel, "Frozen II", she abdicates the throne to her younger sister Anna.
2. In a Verdi opera, a princess seems to have feelings for a Guard of the Army which has captured her handmaiden's father. Name the princess.

Answer: Amneris

The opera is, of course, Verdi's "Aida" - focusing on Aida, the enslaved handmaiden of the Egyptian princess Amneris. At the end of the opera, Radames chooses Aida over Amneris.
3. This princess, in a 1987 movie, was betrothed (against her will) to Prince Humperdinck and kidnapped by multiple outlaws. The movie ultimately ends with her being with her true love. Name the princess.

Answer: Buttercup

Based on a 1973 novel by William Goldman, Buttercup is the damsel-in-distress in the movie "The Princess Bride." Her true love is a farmer named Westley. However, an incident in which Westley is left for dead leaves Buttercup at the mercy of three outlaws and a resentful royal relative.
4. The King of Britain, the King of France, the Duke of Burgundy, the Duke of Cornwall and the Duke of Albany are all characters in which Shakespeare play?

Answer: King Lear

In "King Lear", the character King Lear is the aforementioned King of Britain. The other characters revolve around Lear's daughters, Regan, Cordelia and Goneril. The King of France and the Duke of Burgundy aim to win Cordelia's heart. The Duke of Cornwall becomes Regan's husband, and the Duke of Albany becomes Goneril's husband.
5. This character was introduced to the video game world in 1986. However, she was the damsel-in-distress for more than three decades. In 2024, there's a change in the game partially titled "Echoes of Wisdom" - she's the main character. Name the princess.

Answer: Zelda

The first game in the "The Legend of Zelda" series was released in 1986. Since then, there has been an established plot: the main character, Link, saves Princess Zelda and the Kingdom of Hyrule from Ganondorf.

The 2024 game "The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom" changes roles: Zelda, the main character, is now tasked with saving Link and the Kingdom of Hyrule.
6. While Shakespeare's "Hamlet" focuses on a prince's quest to avenge his father, the character Gertrude is also busy: she's a queen, after all. She acts of the queen of which European country?

Answer: The Chronicles of Narnia

"The Chronicles of Narnia" was released between 1950 and 1956, with "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" the first book in the series. The lion Aslan is the titled king of Narnia - or as it's also known, "Aslan's Country". He appears in all seven books of the series.
8. Which pre-colonial Native American princess was the title character of a Disney film released in 1995?

Answer: Pocahontas

The real-life Pocahontas was an early 17th century young Powhatan woman who was captured by English colonists, and later married to John Rolfe. She was later taken to England, where she died young.

The 1995 movie "Pocahontas" however, changes the plot: the young woman fell in love with John Smith despite the restrictions put on her by her father. At the end of the movie, John Smith returned to England without her to heal from injuries. It notably ends with Pocahontas watching the ships depart.
9. A notable Egyptian queen and friend to serpents would become notable in the centuries after her death - especially among playwrights such as William Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw. Name the queen.

Two very notable plays by Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw include the famous "Antony and Cleopatra" and "Caesar and Cleopatra", respectively. Plays, operas, and songs relating to her reign have been dated going back to the 16th century.
10. "Super Mario Bros." was first released in 1985. The objective for Mario (or Luigi, if you play as him) is to rescue Princess Toadstool from King Bowser. However, starting in the late 1990s, the damsel-in-distress adopted a different name. What is it?

Answer: Peach

"Super Mario 64", released in 1996, marked the first appearance of the Princess as Princess Peach.

Before this game's release, her name revolved between Princess Toadstool, and in some games, such as "Super Mario Bros. 2" and "Super Mario Kart", simply Princess. She would, in some games, be the protagonist in games such as "Super Princess Peach" and "Princess Peach: Showtime!".
