Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Coming in at No. 94 was "The Fabulous Baker Boys". The boys in question were played by Jeff and Beau Bridges, but who was the actress who lounged across a piano and sang "Makin Whoopee"?

Answer: Michelle Pfeiffer

"The Fabulous Baker Boys" was released in 1989. Michelle Pfeiffer played the wonderfully named Susie Diamond, and sang all her own songs in the film. Madonna was originally approached for the role, but turned it down.
2. TV programmes also feature in the list. "The Buddha of Suburbia" is at No. 83 in the survey. The star of this series later went on to star in another, rather better known smash hit TV series, which first reached our screens in 2004 (US) and 2005 (UK). Which series is this?

Answer: Lost

Although Naveen Andrews plays an Iraqi in "Lost", he is a British citizen of Indian descent. No stranger to scandal in his personal life, at the age of sixteen he had an affair with his maths teacher, who later bore his child.

"The Buddha of Suburbia" was broadcast by the BBC in 1993. It told the story of a young man with an Indian father and an English mother, struggling to find his place in society. Though the series was critically acclaimed, a six minute orgy scene earned it its place in the survey.
3. At No. 71 was "The Thomas Crown Affair". Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway succeed in making what hitherto innocent game into an erotic experience?

Answer: Chess

Nothing overt occurs during this scene, but a lot is suggested. Director Norman Jewison had originally chosen Eva Marie Saint for the film, but changed his mind after Faye Dunaway shot to fame in "Bonnie and Clyde". "The Thomas Crown Affair" was remade in 1999 with Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo in the lead roles. Faye Dunaway also has a role in the 1999 version, as a psychiatrist.
4. At No. 55 is the film "Don't Look Now". It is possibly the only entry on the survey that earns its place with a lovemaking scene in which the two characters are married to each other. Since its release in 1973, rumours have abounded that Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland, the two stars of the film, weren't acting at all, although they both deny this. Who wrote the book on which the film is based?

Answer: Daphne Du Maurier

Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland met for the first time whilst making this film. The lovemaking scene was the first one they did together, as director Nicolas Roeg wanted to get it out of the way. I usually break the ice at a new job by passing round a packet of biscuits.
5. The dear old BBC found itself in trouble again in 1993, when it broadcast "Lady Chatterley", which came in at No. 46. Joely Richardson played the title role and Sean Bean played Mellors, her lover. Who directed this production?

Answer: Ken Russell

The published version of the book "Lady Chatterley's Lover" was in fact the third version that D H Lawrence wrote - this production was based on all three versions. The sex scenes were toned down to ensure its place on Sunday night TV, but nonetheless the Broadcasting Standards Council received twenty complaints about the sex scenes in the second episode, thus ensuring everyone tuned into the third episode to find out what all the fuss was about!
6. The 1981 version of "The Postman Always Rings Twice" comes in at No. 39 on the survey. In this version, Jessica Lange plays the role of Cora, the lady who clears the kitchen table in a very novel and thoroughly untidy way. Who played Cora in the 1946 film version?

Answer: Lana Turner

Both films are based on the 1934 novel by of the same name by James Cain. Jack Nicholson played the role of Frank in the 1981 version and John Garfield took the role in the 1946 version. "The Postman Always Rings Twice" has also been performed as an opera in 1982 and as a stage play in 2005, with Val Kilmer taking the role of Frank.
7. At No. 21 is a film starring Neve Campbell, Denise Richards, Matt Dillon and Kevin Bacon. Released in 1998 it tells a convoluted tale of fraud, murder and sexual shenanigans - not necessarily in that order. What is the title of this film?

Answer: Wild Things

"Wild Things" is incredibly sleazy and has many twists and turns in its plot. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you watch it, be sure to sit through the credits or else you'll be completely confused. Kevin Bacon has a brief full-frontal nudity scene in this film.

He also has a no nudity clause in his contract. As he produced this film, he was in the interesting position of being able to sue himself.
8. "Top Gun" came in at No. 18. Which one of these songs was used in a love scene in this film?

Answer: "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin

Strangely, "Top Gun" earns its place on the list not just for the love scene between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, but also for a scene in which several cast members play volleyball. Truly a film with something for everyone. The Righteous Brothers did feature on the soundtrack, with "You've Lost That Loving Feeling".
9. "From Dusk Till Dawn" appears at No. 3, largely thanks to Salma Hayek. What obstacle did Ms. Hayek have to overcome to carry out her role in this film?

Answer: Fear of snakes

Ms Hayek appears as a dancer in a bar, complete with a large python draped around her person. The body count in this film is a startling 122. Director Robert Rodriguez appeased the censors by making the vampires' blood green, which I suppose cut down on the gore content.
10. At No. 1 was a James Bond film, "Dr No". Ursula Andress emerging from the sea in a bikini earns this film its place at the top of the survey. What was her name in this film?

Answer: Honey Ryder

How do they get away with those names? Mary Goodnight was played by Britt Ekland in "The Man With The Golden Gun", Plenty O'Toole was played by Lana Wood (sister of Natalie) in "Diamonds Are Forever" and Holly Goodhead was played by Lois Chiles in "Moonraker".
