Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Francis
Answer: Oliver & Company
'Oliver & Company' is Disney's take on Charles Dickens' 'Oliver Twist', but with dogs instead of people, and a kitten in the role of Oliver. Francis is one of the group of dogs owned by Fagin. He has a posh English accent and, unlike other cartoon members of his breed, is quite intelligent.
His party piece is faking being run over as a distraction. He also enjoys art and the works of Shakespeare. Patrick Stewart was supposed to voice him but turned the role down as he was filming 'Star Trek: The Next Generation', so Roscoe Lee Browne got the part instead.
2. Jack
Answer: Georgetown University Hoyas
Jack is the name of the official mascot for the Georgetown University Hoyas, the university athletics teams. Rather than being a bloke in a mascot outfit (although the Hoyas basketball team sometimes have one as well), Jack is a live bulldog, and there have been several bulldogs of the same name since 1962.
The first Jack was going to be called Hoya but only answered to the name of Jack, and the name stuck for the mascot. Bulldogs were selected as the dog breed of choice for Georgetown because of their association with tenacity.
Other universities, such as Butler and James Madison, have also used live bulldogs as mascots.
3. Bull
Answer: Naruto
Bull is a group of summon animals collectively known as 'Ninken', or 'ninja dogs', belonging to Kakash Hatake. He is a giant bulldog and the largest of the group, and is first seen restraining Zabuza Momochi in the Land of the Waves arc. The leader of the Ninken is Pakkun, a pug with the ability to talk, who often rides on Bull's head; Bull, however, does not talk. Each of the Ninken wears a vest with the henohenomoneji, a scarecrow's face made of hiragana characters, on the back (a reference to Kakashi's name meaning 'scarecrow') and a forehead protector, and several dogs resemble human Naruto characters.
4. Rubble
Answer: PAW Patrol
Rubble the bulldog is one of the original members of the PAW Patrol, along with police dog Chase (a German shepherd), fire dog Marshall (a Dalmatian), recycling dog Rocky (a mutt), pilot Skye (a cockapoo), and water rescue dog Zuma (a chocolate Labrador retriever).
He is a construction worker who wears a yellow helmet and hi-vis jacket, and drives a bulldozer. The dogs all wear tags that flash whenever there is an emergency. Rubble is a big eater and loves small animals, but is frightened of spiders.
He often makes corny jokes involving puns relating to digging.
5. King
Answer: 'Jewelpet' series
King is a pink French bulldog who represents Health, and the only Jewelpet not to be named after the jewel of which his eyes are made (his eyes are onyx). He wears a golden crown and a club-shaped necklace, and has healing powers. Like many other Jewelpets, his characterisation varies depending on the series; in the first series, he's in love with Lapis, a Russian blue cat, while in 'Kira Deco', he's a dodgy salesman.
In 'Magical Change', he is one of the Jewelpets who can change into a human; his human form has pink hair and massive eyebrows. Along with Diana the munchkin cat and Dian the Maine Coon, both of whom play antagonistic roles throughout the various series, he is one of the least popular Jewelpets in Jewel Land.
6. Lady Di
Answer: Eastenders
Lady Di is an English bulldog owned by Mick Carter (played by Danny Dyer), whose family live at the Queen Vic pub. She is named after Princess Diana and often wears fancy outfits, such as a tutu or a Christmas pudding outfit. In true British soap opera style, she became pregnant after mating with Tramp, a mutt owned by the Branning family (and who was sadly run over by one of his owners). Phil Mitchell saves the life of her youngest puppy.
7. Hector
Answer: The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries
'The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries' was a '90s Looney Tunes cartoon featuring Sylvester the cat, Tweety Pie the canary, Granny (their owner) and Hector, a large grey bulldog voiced by Frank Welker. Hector acts as a bodyguard to Tweety Pie and sometimes beats Sylvester up when he tries to eat him.
Unfortunately, Sylvester is far more intelligent than he is. He originally featured in several cartoons starring Tweety and Sylvester, where he was sometimes known as Spike (not to be confused with the 'Tom & Jerry' character).
8. Chance
Answer: Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey
Chance is the narrator and one of the three animal heroes of 'Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey', the 1993 remake of the 1963 film. In the original movie, the three animals were Luath the Labrador retriever, Tao the Siamese cat and Bodger the bull terrier, but in the remake, besides Chance (an American bulldog), the other animals were a golden retriever called Shadow (Don Ameche) and a Himalayan cat called Sassy (Sally Field). Chance is voiced by Michael J Fox and is the younger and more immature of the two dogs.
They travel through the wilderness of the Sierra Nevada to find their owners, with Sassy falling over a waterfall and being momentarily separated from the dogs, and Chance gets porcupine quills stuck in his muzzle after trying to befriend a porcupine.
The whole experience helps him appreciate being part of a family.
9. Spike and Tyke
Answer: Tom & Jerry
Spike and Tyke are a pair of American bulldogs who sometimes appear in the 'Tom & Jerry' cartoons. Spike was originally introduced in 1942 in 'Dog Trouble', and his son Tyke was introduced in 1949's 'Love That Pup'. In some episodes, Spike is known as 'Killer', 'Butch' or 'Bulldog'. Spike sometimes gets caught up in the endless fighting between Tom and Jerry, with him sometimes attacking Tom and/or protecting Jerry, though Tom sometimes gets one over on him by tickling him.
The two also appeared in 'Tom & Jerry Kids', along with fellow father-and-son duo Droopy and Dripple.
10. Snubbull
Answer: 'Pokemon' series
Snubbull is a small Fairy-type Pokemon that resembles a pink bulldog with an underbite, a blue collar and blue spots on its body. It evolves into Granbull, which resembles a purple bulldog with massive fangs. It is predominantly female and one of the Generation II Pokemon. Because of its resemblance to a cute little dog, it is a popular pet, and like a real dog, it has a strong sense of smell and can be used for tracking.
It lives in urban areas. Although its fangs and scowling face make it look mean, it's actually quite shy and would rather scare its enemies than fight them.
