Answer: Michael Palin

2. Which Python sang the theme song to the popular British comedy show 'One Foot in the Grave'?

Answer: Eric Idle

Eric Idle wrote and sang the theme song for 'One Foot in the Grave' which was a very funny British comedy about a man who has been made redundant from his job and finds it difficult to adapt to the change of life style. Victor Meldrew the main character, brilliantly played by Richard Wilson, is so grumpy that the name has become a byword for a miserable old man. Annette Crosby plays his long-suffering wife.

4. Which Python played the lead in the movie 'Clockwise'?

Answer: John Cleese

'Clockwise' is a story about an obsessively punctual headmaster of a comprehensive school, who is invited to speak at a headmasters' conference. He is delighted at this honour but on his way to the event every conceivable thing goes wrong, and by the time he takes the stage at the venue he has completely unravelled. The movie was written by Michael Frayn.
5. 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' was based on which story?

Answer: King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table

This was a parody of the Arthurian legend of the king's search for the holy grail. All the pythons appeared in it and Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam jointly directed it. It was released in 1975 and thirty years later Eric Idle used it as the basis for his musical 'Spamalot'.
6. What was the music that opened 'Monty Python's Flying Circus'?

Answer: The Liberty Bell

'The Liberty Bell' is an American army march which was written by John Philip De Souza. It was recorded by the New York Military Band around 1910, More recently, in 2009, it was recorded by the United States Marines Band. De Souza wrote the piece as part of an opera which he never finished.

He and his band manager, George Hinton, attended the Columbian exposition and when a backdrop was lowered showing 'The Liberty Bell' Hinton suggested that de Souza's march be called the same. De Souza agreed and he sold 'The Liberty Bell' to the John Church company.

It was an immediate success.
7. Which of the python team co-wrote and acted in the television comedy 'Fawlty Towers'?

Answer: John Cleese

John Cleese wrote the comedy 'Fawlty Towers' with his then wife Connie Booth. He played Basil Fawlty, the manager of a small hotel in Torquay, England and Connie played the waitress/maid. Basil was based on a very rude manager at a hotel where John had once stayed and was a discourteous snob.

He was somewhat henpecked by his wife Sybil, played brilliantly by Prunella Scales. The late Andrew Sachs played the waiter from Barcelona who was very badly treated by Basil.
8. Which two members of the Python team performed 'The Dead Parrot Sketch'?

Answer: John Cleese and Michael Palin

This sketch was written by John Cleese and Graham Chapman. It was based on a sketch they had written before when a used car salesman refuses to acknowledge that there is anything wrong with the car he has sold to a customer. This in turn was based on a real life experience of Michael Palin's with a car salesman.

At first the customer was returning a toaster but they felt it needed a more ridiculous item and so they had the idea of the dead parrot.
9. Which Python played the colonel character who often came on, sometimes in the middle of a sketch, to tell them that they were all far too silly?

Answer: Graham Chapman

Graham Chapman always played any figure of authority in the series including the colonel. Graham was a talented writer who worked a lot for the BBC including writing for Marti Feldman, Roy Hudd and David Frost. He also wrote collaboratively with John Cleese and Bill Oddie. Sadly he died in 1989 from cancer at the early age of 48.
10. Which member of the Monty python team was a director on all three movies?

Answer: Terry Jones

Terry Jones began writing with Michael Palin when he left university. They wrote for some successful programmes including 'Do not Adjust Your Set' and 'The Frost Report'. It was largely Terry's influence which led to the surreal quality of the Monty Python shows.

He directed the first python film along with Terry Gilliam who was a more experienced director, and then directed the other two alone.
