Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Patsy Stone
Answer: Edina Monsoon
Patsy Stone and Edina Monsoon are two characters ('characters' being the operative word here) from the BBC program (or programme) "Absolutely Fabulous" (1992-2012). Edina or Eddy, created and played by Jennifer Saunders, is the owner of a PR firm but she rarely appears to be working.
She is always on the lookout for the next style or trend to follow yet she still seems to be operating in the culture of the 1960s. Patsy is the drunken, man-chasing 'Ethel' to Eddy's bizarre 'Lucy'.
2. Lillian Donovan
Answer: Annie Walker
In the movie "Bridesmaids" (2011), Lillian was the bride-to-be and she was played by Maya Rudolph, while Annie, the maid of honor, was Kristen Wiig. The movie was written by Annie Mumolo and Wiig, and was about the misadventures of these bridesmaids prior to the wedding. I think I am also in the minority in not finding this film funny.
3. Natalie Cook
Answer: Dylan Sanders
"Charlie's Angels" (2000) is, of course, based on the original TV show which ran from 1976-1981, starring Farrah Fawcett and her hair, along with Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith, originally. The idea might have been the empowerment of women (or 'girls', as Charlie called them), yet they took their orders from a man they never saw, over the telephone - no iphones were available. Flash forward to the modern angels of 2000... and for the next millennium, i.e., Natalie Cook (Cameron Diaz), Dylan Sanders (Drew Barrymore) and Alex Munday (Lucy Liu), still fighting bad guys and still taking orders from an unseen boss.
4. Samantha Jones
Answer: Carrie Bradshaw
Originally a TV show, "Sex and the City" (1998-2004) featured journalist Carrie Bradshaw and her sex-starved friend Samantha Jones, an uninhibited Public Relations executive. Here, as in many female-centric shows, we rarely saw these women working - just walking around on their Manolo Blahniks, spending money, drinking Cosmos and flirting. Oh, yeah, and there were two other friends, i.e., Charlotte and Miranda; now you know it all!
5. Six LeMeure
Answer: Blossom Russo
Mayim Bialik played teenager Blossom Russo on the sitcom "Blossom" (1990-1995). Blossom lives with her single father, a musician, and two older brothers. Her unconventional upbringing must be the reason for her hats with the large flowers, and her friendship with the emotionally deprived Six who is always visiting and winding up getting into trouble along with Six. BTW, if you ever wondered how Six got her name (although you probably never did), she was the sixth child born to her family. The show is sort of a prepubescent "Laverne and Shirley".
6. Michele Weinberger
Answer: Romy White
Yet another movie with dumb female protagonists, we have "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" (1997). Romy is played by Mira Sorvino, an Academy Award winning actress, while Michele is Lisa Kudrow who was graduated from Vassar College. The plot centers around these two somewhat dense characters who decide to attend their ten year high school reunion, despite the fact that they had been outcasts in high school. So...they take their business suits and cell phones, and claim to have invented Post-it notes.
While the ruse doesn't work, it all winds up well for them in the end...a fairytale indeed!
7. Kelly Taylor
Answer: Brenda Walsh
Twins Brandon and Brenda Walsh move from their old home in Minneapolis, Minnesota to "Beverly Hills, 90210" (1990-2000); talk about culture shock! Brenda and Brandon wind up going to school at West Beverly High in the posh suburb of Beverly Hills ('that is'). Brenda and Kelly Taylor, played by Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth, respectively, become best friends, hang out at the Peach Pit and worry about boys...once again we have the trials and tribulations of teenage angst, this time with money.
8. Gabrielle
Answer: Xena
And now we go back to the past...far back, to watch Xena and Gabrielle in the ancient world, battling ruthless warriors and gods on "Xena: Warrior Princess" (1995-2001). We finally have a heroine who is not ditzy, although she still does not have a last name.
It seems Xena was once known as the "Destroyer of Nations"; she is now trying to make amends by fight for good against the forces of evil, no matter how indomitable they may be. Xena is played by Lucy Lawless, and Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) is her very close friend.
9. Dionne Davenport
Answer: Cher Horowitz
The tagline for "Clueless" (1995) was "Sex, Clothes, Popularity. Is there a problem here?". The film is about Cher Horowitz, played by Alicia Silverstone, and her friend Dionne Davenport (Stacey Dash). Cher is a rich high school student in Beverly Hills (sound familiar?) who helps her friends by matchmaking and making fashion choices. Once again we face the ups and downs of adolescence but, this time, the seemingly superficial Cher is really much deeper than she appears to be.
10. Thelma Dickinson
Answer: Louise Sawyer
I could not have a quiz about movie BFFs without including one of the best, i.e., "Thelma and Louise" (1991). Thelma Dickinson is a submissive housewife and Louise Sawyer is a feisty waitress. The two, played by Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, respectively, decide to go on a fishing trip, but what they catch is not fish! A man tries to rape Thelma in a bar and Louise winds up shooting and killing him.
They decide to flee to Mexico...but they don't quite make it. Despite the final scene, this is a movie about female empowerment!
