Living in Mickey's Shadow, a Donald Duck Quiz

One of my favorite cartoon characters ever created will be playing second fiddle in the history books forever. However, Donald Duck has had some great moments and will always be near the top of my list.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Donald wear on a day to day basis?

Answer: A sailor suit

Well, most of one anyways. Donald's classic outfit is a sailor hat and shirt with no pants (probably to show his tail which he often uses as an extra arm) Ironically, he never feels shamed or covers up until somebody removes his shirt. Side note: Donald does wear pants when he is swimming as part of his 1930's style "bathing suit". For those of you who don't know, the 1930's were very conservative about showing skin and the bathing suits covered up almost as much as the regular clothes. Thanks to Catamount for the side note.
2. Which of the following is NOT one of Donald's nephews?

Answer: Daffy

Huey, Dewey, and Louie are technically Donald's nephews, but Donald has become more of a legal guardian. They are the triplet sons of Donald's sister Della Thelma Duck (Dumbella) and one of Daisy Duck's brothers. Donald stepped up to the plate and now cares for the children like they were his own.

Despite this, the boys favorite hobby seems to be tormenting their uncle into fits of rage. What a family! Special thanks to Catamount for the info about the boy's parents.
3. Which character(s) was/were created as adversaries to Donald Duck?

Answer: Chip and Dale

The main goal of these two chipmunks is usually to collect as much food as possible but their hobbies include pestering Donald, which they enjoy almost as much. They are always laughing at Donald's misfortune, a situation often brought on as a result of their mischief. Even though you could rarely understand their chattering, they usually got their point across loud and clear.
4. Which branch of the military did Donald serve in?

Answer: Army

One of my favorite series of Donald cartoons involves his mishaps in the army. He is always shown fighting with and outwitting the burly sergeant. Ironically, even though he is a duck, he apparently can't fly and often expresses his desire to join the airborne troops.
5. Who is Donald's girlfriend?

Answer: Daisy

I don't know how she puts up with him, but Daisy always ends up coming back to Donald. She has an avid dislike for his short temper and often tries to change him, but often ends up getting frustrated and leaving Donald to his misery.
6. What is Donald's self proclaimed occupation?

Answer: Actor

In an old cartoon called "The New Spirit", Donald says he is an actor on his tax return form. Walt made this cartoon in 1942, as part of a series of propaganda and educational films to help promote WWII. This particular film was made to encourage people to pay their income tax.
7. What is Donald's middle name?

Answer: Fauntleroy

Another bit of info picked up in the wartime films. Fauntleroy is a reference to his sailor's hat. That kind of hat was once an accessory to an outfit called a fauntleroy suit. This manner of dress was in fashion for kids at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century after one was described in Burnett's "Little Lord Fauntleroy".

Many thanks and congratulations to Heidi66 for finding this reference.
8. What was Donald's debut cartoon?

Answer: The Wise Little Hen

"The Wise Little Hen" debuted in 1934, as one of the "Silly Symphony" cartoons. It is a remake of the classic fable of a mother hen who needs help planting corn. Donald refuses to help and so when it is time to eat, he is locked out.
9. Which of the following would you be most likely to hear Donald say?

Answer: "Aww, Phoey!"

Donald shows his disappointment with either this classic catch phrase or by throwing one of his trademark temper tantrums. I can't type it here but if you have seen any of his cartoons, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
10. Who was the original voice for Donald Duck?

Answer: Clarence Nash

Clarence "Ducky" Nash provided the original voice for this loveable character. I have to give him credit because he was an expert at making what is most likely the most difficult voice. He used no props to help (some people think he talked through a duck call) but was able to make Donald speak in a way that the public could actually understand him. Tony Anselmo was Clarence's successor but, in my opinion, it just wasn't the same.
