Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jeffrey Hunter
Answer: Bruce Greenwood
Captain Christopher Pike was Kirk's predecessor commanding the Enterprise. He was the ship's captain in the pilot episode, "The Cage". Hunter dropped out of the "Star Trek" world when the pilot failed. His work was integrated into a two-part episode titled "The Menagerie", shown in season one. Hunter played Jesus Christ in the 1961 film "King of Kings". Hunter died in 1969 at the age of 42.
In the reboot movie, Bruce Greenwood plays Pike in a different timeline. He urges a young Kirk to join Starfleet Academy.
This Pike is also badly injured like the TV Pike, but he eventually recovers, only to die in an attack by Khan. Greenwood has played numerous TV and movie roles, including JFK in the 2000 film "Thirteen Days".
2. James Doohan
Answer: Simon Pegg
Montgomery Scott was usually called "Scotty" by Kirk and McCoy. Vancouver-born Doohan made his character a Scotsman, figuring they make the best engineers. Scotty made an appearance in "The Next Generation" series, having been stuck in a transporter for decades, but not aging in that state. Doohan was a Normandy veteran, shot and wounded by friendly fire.
He died in 2005 at the age of 85. Simon Pegg has starred in several films, some with his best friend Nick Frost. Between his first two "Trek" movies, he played with Frost in 2011's "Paul". Pegg and Frost played comic book enthusiasts en route to Comic-Con, who stumble upon an extraterrestrial named Paul, voiced by Seth Rogan. Pegg co-wrote the 2016 "Star Trek Beyond".
3. Nichelle Nichols
Answer: Zoe Saldana
Nyota Uhura was the communications officer on the Enterprise. Nichols was prepared to leave the series after the first year, but a fan named Martin Luther King Jr. encouraged her to stay on the show, as she was a role model for black children and women of all races. Saldana has been in movies since 2000. "Star Trek"'s Uhura is considered her breakout role.
In 2009 she played Neytiri, the protagonist in the blockbuster "Avatar".
4. Ricardo Montalbán
Answer: Benedict Cumberbatch
Khan Noonien Singh once controlled over 1/4 of Earth during the Eugenics wars of the 1990s. After a long exile, Khan captured the USS Reliant and used her to nearly destroy Enterprise. Montalbán was born in Mexico City. He acted in 48 films and was well known as Mr. Roarke on TV's "Fantasy Island".
He passed away in 2009 at the age of 88. Cumberbatch's Khan was known as John Harrison, trying to keep his true identity secret. He was forced by Starfleet Admiral Marcus to develop weapons for use against the Klingon Empire.
His crew was held hostage to force his compliance. Cumberbatch has done far too much to list here. His credits include films, theatre, television, radio, narration and video games.
5. Mark Lenard
Answer: Ben Cross
Ambassador Sarek is Spock's Vulcan father. Lenard was the first to play three different races in the "Star Trek" universe. He played both a Romulan and Vulcan in the TV series. He also played a small part as a Klingon Captain in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".
He had a very distinctive voice which was easily recognized, even when hidden behind masks and make up. Lenard passed away in 1996 at the age of 72. Cross has nearly 60 film acting credits, the most notable being his role as Harold Abrahams in 1981's "Chariots of Fire".
6. Walter Koenig
Answer: Anton Yelchin
Pavel Chekov was the Russian navigator who debuted in season two. Koenig was born in Chicago, from Russian Jewish immigrants. Koenig also appeared on "Babylon 5". Koenig was best man for George Takei's wedding to Brad Altman. The reboot Chekov was portrayed by Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) native Anton Yelchin.
He had 46 film credits and several TV credits. He was tragically killed in 2016 when he exited his Jeep and it rolled, pinning him against a pillar. He was only 27.
7. George Takei
Answer: John Cho
Hikaru Sulu was the helmsman of the Enterprise. Takei was born in Los Angeles to a Japanese immigrant father and an American mother of Japanese ancestry. He and his family spent time in relocation camps during WWII, due to their ancestry. Takei has over 30 film credits, including Captain Nim in "The Green Berets". Takei is very active in the LGBT community. Cho has played the stoner Harold Lee in the "Harold and Kumar" movies.
He has appeared in many TV series, including extensive roles in "Off Centre", "FlashForward", "Go On" and "Sleepy Hollow".
8. Leonard Nimoy
Answer: Zachary Quinto
Mr. Spock was the half Vulcan/half Human science officer and second in command of Enterprise. Nimoy played the only regular character both in the '64 pilot episode and the regular series. He also appeared in "The Next Generation" and the reboots. Nimoy also played in seasons four and five on "Mission: Impossible", once even acting with Mark Lenard, neither wearing pointy ears. Nimoy passed away in 2015 at the age of 83. Quinto played code breaker Adam Kaufman in season three of the Fox thriller "24". Later he played the villain Sylar in the NBC series "Heroes".
9. Jane Wyatt
Answer: Winona Ryder
Amanda Grayson was Spock's Human mother. Wyatt has over 20 movie credits. She is best known for playing Margaret Anderson on "Father Knows Best", winning Emmys in 1958 through 1960. Her role as Spock's mother is likely her second most memorable, even though she only appeared in one episode "Journey to Babel", and briefly in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home". Wyatt passed away in 2006 at the age of 96. Ryder gained fame as the teenager who befriends a ghost couple who recently died in "Beetlejuice".
She has acted in over 45 other films, including "Edward Scissorhands', "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and "Black Swan".
10. DeForest Kelley
Answer: Karl Urban
Leonard H. "Bones" McCoy is the ship's doctor and often the conscience of Captain Kirk. Kelley was born in Georgia, just like his character. Kelley appeared in over 25 movies before "Star Trek". Of the seven movies after his TV role, only one was not a "Star Trek" movie.
He also appeared as McCoy in the "Next Generation" premiere episode "Encounter at Farpoint". Kelley died in 1999 at age 79. Urban made several TV appearances, including "Xena: Warrior Princess". Other than Dr. McCoy, his best known role would be Éomer, nephew of Théoden, King of the Rohirrim, in the second and third "Lord of the Rings" films. ("The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King").
