Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. James Tiberius Kirk was born on March 22nd in the year 2233 to parents George and Winona. In what U.S. state was he born?

Answer: Iowa

The 2009 "Star Trek" reboot movie changed this historical fact for Jim Kirk. According to the alternate timeline, he was born prematurely on a shuttle escaping the destruction of the USS Kelvin.

Question by reedy
2. In the "Star Trek" episode "The Conscience of the King" we learned that prior to joining Starfleet, Kirk lived on a planet as a teenager where he witnessed Governor Kodos carry out a massacre (in the year 2346). What was the name of the planet?

Answer: Tarsus IV

The official accounting of the massacre had Governor Kodos dying in the aftermath, and Kirk had been willing to accept that until one of the others contacted him with suspicions that a traveling acting troupe's leader was, in fact, Kodos. In the end, it was Kodos, but the attempts on the lives of the witnesses (seven of nine had died under mysterious circumstances) were actually the acts of Kodos' daughter, trying to protect him.

Question by reedy
3. In the 2009 film "Star Trek", what fruit was Kirk eating whilst taking the Kobayashi Maru test?

Answer: Apple

Kirk surprised his fellow cadets and the assessors by remaining unconcerned whilst being attacked by several Klingon vessels. He could clearly be seen eating an apple after instructing Uhura to alert the medical bay to receive all personnel from the Kobayashi Maru.

Although the Kobayashi Maru was supposed to be a no-win scenario, Kirk had reprogrammed the simulation to allow the rescue of the crew. In "Star Trek II", we learn he got a commendation for original thinking for this, however as "Star Trek" was set in an alternate reality, Kirk had to face a board of inquiry to account for his actions.

4. The actor most associated with the role of James T. Kirk is, of course, William Shatner. In the 2009 film "Star Trek", which actor took the role? (Note: He was first seen trying to chat up Uhura in a bar.)

Answer: Chris Pine

Zachary Quinto played Spock, Karl Urban played McCoy and Simon Pegg played Scotty.

Chris Pine's father has also appeared in episodes of "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Star Trek: Enterprise".

Question by Daddy19
5. The "TOS" episode "Shore Leave" had Kirk and company beam down to a planet where their every whim seemed to come to life. Kirk thought of his time at Starfleet Academy when he was severely bullied. What was the name of that bully?

Answer: Finnegan

After he knocked Kirk down in their fistfight, Finnegan taunts Kirk, "Get up. Get up. Get up. Always fight fair, don't you? True officer and gentleman, you. You stupid underclassman. I've got the edge. I'm still twenty years old. Look at you. You're an old man."

Shortly after he defeated Finnegan in his fight, the "Caretaker" showed up and answered Kirk's questions about what had been happening. It turned out to be nothing but an elaborate amusement park planet.

6. The 2009 reboot of the "Star Trek" movie franchise saw Kirk take command of the Enterprise while still a Cadet at Starfleet Academy. In the original reality, what ship was Lieutenant Kirk's first deep-space assignment?

Answer: USS Farragut

Kirk's first assigned ship while still training with Starfleet Academy was the USS Republic, where he served as an ensign with his friend Ben Finney. Upon graduation and promotion to Lieutenant, Kirk was assigned to the USS Farragut under the command of Captain Garrovick.

Question by reedy
7. ("TOS": "Operation Annihilate") Kirk's brother, Sam and his family lived on the planet Deneva. This planet was just the latest in a long history of planetary invasions by flying parasitic creatures from another universe, wiping out whole civilizations. The creatures controlled those they infected as well as caused insanity. Which member of Kirk's family was the only one to survive?

Answer: Peter (Sam's son)

Kirk and a landing party beamed down to Deneva to investigate and found Sam already dead and Aurelan and Peter unconscious. Aurelan died on the Enterprise but eventually a cure was found in time for Peter. No daughter was present in this episode. The cure that killed the parasites was exposure to a form of light invisible to human eyes-ultraviolet light.

Question by christi_dove
8. In an episode of "Star Trek: The Original Series" Kirk was happily married and his wife was expecting their first child.

Answer: True

This is true. In "The Paradise Syndrome", a large alien obelisk on a distant planet zapped Kirk and caused him to lose his memory. The people who lived there were of Native American culture brought there centuries ago by the Preservers. The Preservers took endangered primitive cultures and seeded the galaxy with them. Kirk was believed to be a god and after saving the life of a boy who almost drowned he was given an important position in the tribe and the hand of the Miramanee-daughter of the chief. They were joined (wed) and soon were expecting their first child.

Unfortunately, the people of the tribe turned against him when he did not know how to get into the temple (obelisk) order to save them from an approaching danger (an asteroid) which caused storms and shook the ground. They threw stones at him and his wife, who insisted she belonged with him. This was when Spock and McCoy made it back to the planet but not in time to save Miramanee who died in his arms a little later. Spock did a "Vulcan mind fusion" on Kirk to restore his memory and then figured out how to activate the deflector beam inside the obelisk to prevent the asteroid from hitting the planet.

According to the "Memory Alpha" article "Paradise Syndrome" this episode has garnered criticism for its stereotypical portrayal of Native Americans. Though this episode is probably not on most people's top ten lists of favorite "Star Trek" episodes, Kirk really seemed happy with Miramanee and the ending was truly touching when she died in his arms.

Question by christi_dove
9. In "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", we find out that Admiral Kirk had been involved with Carol Marcus many years before, and now had a grown son named David. Which career path did both Carol and David Marcus pursue?

Answer: Scientific Research

Carol and David Marcus were both scientists working on Project Genesis. The focus of this project was to turn an uninhabitable planet into one that could support life. Dr. Carol Marcus was a molecular biologist. David Marcus, Kirk and Carol's son was also a scientist and part of her team on Project Genesis.

David never knew until the events in this movie, that Kirk was his father and he had a great distrust of Starfleet. Eventually Kirk's heroism impressed David and he told Kirk he was proud to be his son.

Question by christi_dove
10. Most of you know Kirk's arch enemy was Khan whom we first saw in the "TOS" episode "Space Seed" and then again in the movie "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." But do you know his full name?

Answer: Khan Noonien Singh

Ricardo Montalban famously (and awesomely) portrayed this genetically engineered advanced human in both "TOS" and "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." In "The Wrath of Khan" Khan blamed Kirk for the terrible suffering of his people on Ceti Alpha V and the death of his wife. He was obsessed with revenge like Ahab of "Moby-Dick" was obsessed with The Whale. In his last words he even quoted Ahab: "From hell's heart I stab at thee; for hates sake I spit my last breath at thee."

Many of you "Star Trek: TNG" fans probably already know Noonien Soong was the cyberneticist who successfully developed the positronic brain and the androids Data and Lore among others. I took the liberty of adding the name Khan to his name to make the question a little more challenging.

Question by christi_dove
11. Tragically, in one of the "Star Trek" movies, David Marcus, Kirk and Carol's son, died. Which sentence best describes the circumstances of his death?

Answer: David is killed by a Klingon on the Genesis Planet to try and force Admiral Kirk to surrender.

In "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock," Commander Kruge (a Klingon) spoke of Genesis "as the most powerful destructive force ever created," and he wanted that power. On the Genesis Planet he captured Lt. Saavik, David Marcus, and Spock and thought they were the team that developed this "doomsday weapon."

Kruge threatened to have each prisoner killed if Admiral Kirk did not surrender. To show he was serious, he told one of his men to kill one of the prisoners. A Klingon on the planet took out a knife and looked like he was going to kill Saavik, so David lunged at the Klingon and they fought. Sadly, the Klingon stabbed him in the chest, killing him.

Question by christi_dove
12. Captain James T. Kirk committed seven separate temporal violations.

Answer: False

In the "DS9" episode "Trials and Tribble-ations", the USS Defiant went back in time. Some of the senior staff covertly boarded both Kirk's Enterprise and space station K-7 in order to prevent Kirk's assassination by Arne Darvin.

Upon their return to Deep Space Nine, Sisko has a visit from temporal investigations. When he identifies the Enterprise, they comment that Kirk's file was the largest on record, containing seventeen separate temporal violations.

Question by Daddy19
13. In the year 2293, Kirk and McCoy were sentenced to lifelong imprisonment on the Klingon prison asteroid Rura Penthe. What was the crime that they had been convicted of?

Answer: The assassination of Chancellor Gorkon

After the Enterprise had supposedly fired two torpedoes at Chancellor Gorkon's ship, two spacesuit-clad assassins beamed aboard and shot Gorkon. Kirk and McCoy beamed aboard in the aftermath to try to save Gorkon's life, to no avail. They were subsequently arrested and held for trial.

Question by reedy
14. On what deck of the Enterprise-B was the retired Captain Kirk when the Nexus struck the ship?

Answer: Deck 15

Initially, Captain Harriman was going to deflector control leaving Kirk in command of the Enterprise-B, however Kirk realises that Harriman should retain his place on the bridge.

Upon asking, Kirk is told that deflector control was located on Deck 15, section 21-Alpha. Once the Enterprise-B has broken free of the Nexus, Demora Sulu reports that sections 20-28 were affected on decks 13, 14 and 15.

Question by Daddy19
15. James T. Kirk died assisting Jean-Luc Picard in trying to stop Doctor Tolian Soran from destroying a sun. On which planet did this occur?

Answer: Veridian III

Soran was trying to return to the Nexus and had calculated that by destroying the Veridian sun, the Nexus would change course sufficiently to destroy Veridian III. Picard and Kirk teamed up to stop him with Picard heading to the rocket launcher whilst Kirk went to retrieve the PADD which would uncloak the missile. Shortly after retrieving it, the bridge upon which Kirk was clinging collapsed and he plummeted to his death.
