Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many of you know that Captain Jean-Luc Picard was born in France but do you know where in France he was born and what his parents did for a living?

Answer: La Barre and Winegrowers

Yes, Captain Jean-Luc Picard was born in the year 2305 in La Barre, France to Yvette and Maurice Picard and had an older brother Robert. His family owned vineyards in La Barre and produced their own wine. At the time of the events in "TNG" Picard's brother Robert was in charge of the family vineyards. On a few occasions in the series or movies the red wine Chateau Picard was shown or mentioned ("Family", "First Contact", "Star Trek Nemesis").

["Memory Alpha" articles on "Jean-Luc Picard" and "Chateau Picard."]

Question by christi_dove.
2. Would it be true to say Picard and his brother Robert had a close relationship for most of their lives?

Answer: No

No, this is not at all true. We find out in the episode "Family" just how much antipathy there has been between the two brothers even as far back as when they were children. Picard went back to his home village for the first time in 20 years most likely in order to "find himself again." He was still struggling with the great emotional trauma of his time as a Borg ("Best of Both Worlds 1 & 2").

It was revealed Robert was rather the bully to Jean-Luc when they were young and resented the accolades and attention Picard received. Robert felt all the responsibility was on him to tend the vineyards and Picard got away with a lot more. Jean-Luc told Robert he was narrow-minded.

Their verbal exchanges came to blows and soon they were wrestling, rolling around in the mud of the vineyard. When they stopped to take a breather, Picard broke down confessing the anguish he felt about what was done to him by the Borg and what terrible things they made him do. Through this discussion Robert helped Picard come to terms with what had happened to him, that he was human after all and healing would take time. Robert told Jean-Luc he needed to learn to live with what had been done to him and he facilitated Jean-Luc's self-confirmation that his place indeed was on board the Enterprise. After this, Robert and Jean-Luc seemed on much better terms and even hugged before Picard left.

Sadly, in the movie "Star Trek Generations" Picard learned that Robert and his son, Rene, died in a fire. Marie, Robert's wife was the only one to survive.

3. It took two tries for Jean-Luc to be accepted to Starfleet Academy, and after that he had many challenges during his time there. Eventually, he became the most outstanding cadet of his class, but it took the sage advice of the groundskeeper to steer Picard in the right direction. What was that wise groundskeeper's name?

Answer: Mr. Boothby

In the 5th-season episode "The First Duty" Picard came to Earth to provide the commencement speech to the Academy graduating class. While there, he caught up with Boothby, reminiscing about his days as a cadet. In the 4th-season episode "The Final Mission", Picard referred to Boothby as "one of the wisest men he ever knew."

4. Jean-Luc Picard was the first freshman to win the Starfleet Academy marathon.

Answer: True

After Picard was captured by the Borg, Admiral J.P. Hanson commented that Picard passed four upper-class men on the final hill of a 40km run, becoming the first freshman to win the academy marathon.

Question by Daddy19
5. Complete this quote by Captain Jean-Luc Picard from an episode in the 6th season of "Star Trek: TNG" that occurred after an attack by hostile aliens leaving the captain in sickbay near death. "There are many parts of my youth that I'm not proud of. There were loose threads, untidy parts of me that I would like to remove. But when I pulled on one of those threads, it had unraveled the _______ of my life." What is the "t" word that goes in the blank to complete this quote? (Note: The missing word can mean a type of heavy fabric traditionally hand-woven which often illustrates a scene and hung on a wall.)

Answer: tapestry

As many of you know this quote comes from the fan favorite episode "Tapestry." Shortly after graduating from Starfleet Academy Picard got into a fight with an enormous Nausicaan which resulted in him getting stabbed through the heart which is the reason he has an artificial heart. After Captain Picard expressed this incident as one of his regrets, Q gave him the chance to go back in the past to change how reckless and undisciplined he was and the decisions he regretted making.

When Picard did change these things in his past his whole life changed and not for the better. He only became a Lieutenant Junior Grade, an assistant in astrophysics, and not a Starfleet captain. Picard asked Q to give him the chance to put things back to the way they were before, even if it meant he died in Sickbay because that dreary life lacking in passion and imagination was not the life for him.

Later Picard told Riker he was not sure if everything had been a dream or if it had been another one of Q's tricks but if Q really was involved he is grateful to him because he learned something valuable. One of the lessons Picard learned was the events in his life and the choices he made, even the bold, reckless ones of his youth, all contributed to make him the successful Starfleet captain he was today.

I found a quote on Quotatio.com by H. Jackson Brown Jr. that goes nicely with this episode. "Be bold and courageous. When you look back on your life, you'll regret the things you didn't do more than the ones you did."

6. In the "TNG" episode "The Inner Light", Picard lived out another man's life after being struck by a beam from a probe. While living as Kamin, Jean-Luc learned to play a flute-like instrument. What other instrument had Picard learned to play as a child at home on Earth?

Answer: Piano

In order to prepare to host a peace ceremony between two species in the episode "The Perfect Mate", Picard needed to be able to play a chime-like percussion instrument. He said that it reminded him of practicing piano as a child to prepare for some dreaded recital. When asked if he still played, Picard responded, "No. I regret that I gave it up. It used to please my mother... I did not like to perform in front of an audience."

7. Captain Jean-Luc Picard was a very cultured man with a wide variety of interests. Which PAIR of items DOES NOT BOTH give a personal interest of his he either demonstrated or mentioned in the series or movies?

Answer: Archeology and Three-dimensional chess

To make this question easier I chose a hobby or interest featured in a different "Star Trek" series other than "TNG" to be the one Picard wasn't connected with. In this case the odd one out is three-dimensional chess which was actually a favorite pastime of Spock in "Star Trek: TOS."

Remember the question asked was which pair of items DOES NOT BOTH give an interest of his as the answer. This means that even if one of the pair of times in the 4 options is not correct you would choose that one. They both do not have to be incorrect. So even though archeology clearly was one of Picard's great passions, three-dimensional chess was not so it is still the answer to be chosen.

Throughout the series on numerous occasions Picard quoted Shakespeare and would even coach Data with his Shakespearean performances. And of course the captain loved real books, he even took a book with him on his holiday on Risa. Many times in the series he orders "Tea, Earl Grey, hot" from the food replicators. I wonder if sales of Earl Grey Tea soared during the run of "TNG" among fans. The captain even tried an herbal tea blend at the suggestion Lt. Nella Daren with whom he became close.

Equestrianism has to do with horseback riding and Picard even kept his own saddle on the "Enterprise" as we find out in the episode "Starship Mine." To quote Picard, "most serious riders do have their own saddles."

Captain Picard played the Ressikan flute due to the events of "The Inner Light," and this continued in "Lessons." He also fenced and can be seen fencing with Guinan in "I, Borg." Picard developed a great interest in archeology at Starfleet Academy and his mentor there in the field was Richard Galen ("The Chase.") Galen had offered Picard the opportunity to work with him as an archaeologist at least twice, once in Picard's Academy days and then again on the Enterprise to go on an expedition of great significance. To Galen's disappointment Picard turned him down both times. He had a deeper commitment to and sense of belonging for both Starfleet and command.

Question by christi_dove.
8. Whilst in command of the USS Stargazer, Picard used a technique in battle against a Ferengi ship that came to bear his name. In which skirmish did this take place?

Answer: Battle of Maxia

The Picard Maneuver involved confusing enemy ships by jumping to warp over a short distance, therefore appearing to be in two places at the same time.

A second 'Picard Maneuver' was coined by fans as Picard would frequently tug at the bottom of his uniform jacket to straighten it.

Question by Daddy19
9. A relative of one of the Enterprise-D's senior staff died whilst Jean-Luc Picard was commanding USS Stargazer. Who was this?

Answer: Jack Crusher

Kyle Riker was Will's father, who came aboard the Enterprise-D in the episode "The Icarus Factor". Kestra Troi was Deanna's sister, she drowned whilst Deanna was a baby. Deanna didn't find out about her sister until the "TNG" episode "Dark Page". Silva La Forge was Geordi's mother and was in command of USS Hera when it went missing.

Jack Crusher died whilst on an away mission whilst serving aboard USS Stargazer, although the precise details of his death have not been explained.

10. The jump from the small screen to the movies occurred with "Star Trek: Generations" and a storyline that brought Kirk and Picard together in the Nexus and in the fight against the villain. While in the Nexus, Jean-Luc saw a possible reality where he was married with a family. How many children did he have?

Answer: Three

In the movie, there were four children present, but one of them was his nephew René. The could-have-been family included children Matthew, Mimi and Thomas.

11. ("Star Trek: First Contact") Captain Jean-Luc Picard had something in common with Khan ("Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan") and this was the great desire for revenge. Khan wanted to destroy Captain Kirk for the death of his wife and the suffering of his people on Ceti Alpha V. For a time when the ________ invaded his ship, Picard almost unconsciously became irrationally fixated on revenge for the treatment he had received at their hands and the resulting physical and emotional trauma. In fact he still had nightmares even after all these years.

Answer: Borg

"Best of Both Worlds" was a two part episode in which Picard was assimilated by the Borg becoming Locutus of Borg. He was forced to fight as a Borg, his knowledge used to destroy numerous Federation starships at the Battle of Wolf 359. Though he was rescued by the crew of the Enterprise, he was greatly traumatized.

Both "First Contact" and "The Wrath of Khan" drew parallels with the classic piece of literature, "Moby-Dick" by Herman Melville. Khan and Picard were like Captain Ahab on his quest for revenge against The Whale. But unlike Khan and Ahab, Picard snapped out of it with a little help from Lily Sloane, Zefram Cochrane's partner. Lily was the one who compared Picard to Ahab. He decided not to pursue revenge at all costs but instead to evacuate the crew and cause the Enterprise to self-destruct in order to stop the Borg.

If you recall, the Enterprise went back in time to the 21st century to stop the Borg from changing history and assimilating Earth by preventing Earth's first contact with an alien race, the Vulcans. The Borg tried to impede Zefram Cochran's faster than light (warp) flight in the Phoenix.

Captain Picard stayed on board the Enterprise, during its self-destruct silent countdown, in order to save Data from the Borg. Data deceived the Borg Queen into thinking he was loyal to her and by her command stopped the self-destruct sequence and gave her computer control. The Borg Queen was surprised when the quantum torpedoes she ordered Data to fire at the Phoenix miss and he smashed the glass of a corrosive plasma coolant tank which killed her and the Borg by dissolving their organic parts. Meanwhile, LaForge, Riker, and Troi helped Cochran succeed with the first warp flight.

12. In 2367 the Klingon Chancellor of the High Council, K'mpec, knew he was dying due to poisoning. Because of his distrust of the two rivals for his position and of the High Council, he did something unheard of, he appointed Captain Jean-Luc Picard, a human, to administer the Klingon Rite of Accession. This person is selected by a Klingon Chancellor to be in charge of the Klingon Rite of Accession (after his death) during which there is a struggle for power between two rivals for the coveted position and then who also affirms who the next Chancellor of the High Council will be. ------------------------------ Your task is to carefully read the above paragraph and decide if the information given is accurate or not, and if not what is the correct information. There is only one correct choice below.

Answer: Captain Jean-Luc Picard was appointed to administer the Klingon Rite of Succession, not Accession.

Yes indeed, Jean-Luc Picard was appointed by K'mpec to oversee the Klingon Rite of Succession and he had a tough job ("Star Trek: TNG", "Reunion"). K'mpec thought either Gowan or Duras, the two other contenders for the position, may have been responsible for his poisoning which was considered a cowardly and dishonorable act and the person responsible not fit to rule the Klingon Empire. K'mpec wanted Picard to find out who was responsible and also wanted to avoid a Klingon civil war and the potential for a future war with the Federation if the wrong .

After K'mpec's death and before the Rite of Succession can be completed a bomb detonates killing two Klingons. Captain Picard protracted the Rite of Succession by having the two candidates follow an outdated Klingon ritual in order for there to be time to investigate the bombing. It turns out the bomb was Romulan in origin and had been inserted in the arm of one of Duras' men.

Because Duras killed Worf's mate, K'Ehleyr, the mother of his child, Worf claimed the right of vengeance and killed Duras in combat. Eventually Gowron became the new Klingon High Chancellor.

In my opinion, "Reunion" though rather violent is one of the best Klingon episodes of "TNG" and well worth my rewatching it for this question.
