Paul Orndorff played fullback and tight end for the University of Tampa Spartans football team. In 1973, Paul Orndorff was selected by by the New Orleans Saints in the twelfth round of the 1973 NFL Draft. Orndorff left football in 1975 to train to be a professional wrestler. Orndorff was inducted in the University of Tampa Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.

Larry Zbyszko unsuccessfull challenged for Paul Orndoff's NWA National Heavyweight Championship. Frustrated, Larry Zbyszko paid Killer Tim Brooks to win the title from Orndorff. On March 20, 1983, Brooks won the NWA National Heavyweight Championship. Zbyszko bought the title from Brooks for $25,000. NWA President Bob Geigel preceded to strip Zbyszko of the title.

Paul Orndorff's joined WWE in November of 1983. In January of 1984, Paul Orndorff began appearing on WWE television regularly with "Rowdy" Roddy Piper as his manager and mouthpiece. Orndorff was part of a wrestling stable with "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, Bob Orton, Jr. and "Dr. D" David Schultz during that year. Orndorff helped Piper in his feud with Jimmy Snuka.

On the May 11, 1985 episode of WWE's "Saturday Night's Main Event", Paul Orndorff was the guest on a "Piper's Pit" segment. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff argued over their loss at the WWE's 1985 "Wrestlemania" event. During the summer of 1986, "Adorable" Adrian Adonis began stirring trouble in the relationship between Paul Orndorff and Hulk Hogan. Adonis accused Orndorff of "living in Hulk Hogan's" shadow.

On an episode of WWE's "Championship Wrestling" airing in July of 1986, Paul Orndorff and Hulk Hogan faced the Heenan Family members King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd in a tag team match. The match ended in a disqualification as the Heenan Family double teamed Hulk Hogan. Orndorff saved Hogan from the double team only to attack the "Hulkster" himself. Orndorff celebrated with the Heenan Family and "Adorable" Adrian Adonis after the attack.

Orndorff then began using Hogan's entrance theme and mocking Hogan by mimicking several of his in-ring routines. Hogan and Orndorff faced each other in a match at the WWE's "Big Event" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on August 28, 1986.

On the January 3, 1987 episode of WWE's "Saturday Night's Main Event", Hulk Hogan defended his WWE Championship in a Steel Cage Match against Paul Orndorff. Both wrestlers left the cage and landed on the floor at the same exact time causing a photo finish. The match was initially declared a tie and it was restarted. Hulk Hogan eventually escaped the cage to win the match.

The team won the WCW World Tag Team Championship on two occasions. Pretty Wonderful feuded with the teams of Marcus Alexander Bagwell and 2 Cold Scorpio, Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan, the Nasty Boys and Stars and Stripes.

On the December 11, 1995 episode of WCW's "Monday Night Nitro", Paul Orndorff defeated Disco Inferno. After thr match, Orndorff confronted Brian Pillman of the Four Horsemen in the arena. After telling the other members of the Four Horsemen how much he respected them, Orndorff made derogatory towards Pillman.

Arn Anderson and Ric Flair of the Four Horsemen tried to calm Paul Orndorff down, but Orndorff lost his temper and attacked Brian Pillman. Pillman, Flair and Anderson then attacked Orndorff. Arn Anderson and Ric Flair delivered a spike piledriver to Orndorff on the arena floor during. WCW officials explained that Orndorff had been seriously hurt during the attack and that his career was over.
