Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You have walked into the Bellagio's card room and you see ring games going on at all the tables. What is a ring game?

Answer: A non-tournament game where chips with a real monetary value and/or cash are used

Ring games are also called live games because the action is normally unending as opposed to a tournament where the blinds and/or antes increase at set intervals. In ring games the blinds/antes stay the same all of the time and you can come and go as you please. Ring games are also called cash games because real money and or chips with a real value are used, unlike a tournament where the chips have no monetary value.
2. While waiting for a seat to open up, you watch a $5/$10 Texas Hold'em game being played. Before the cards are dealt, the player under the gun (UTG) says he is putting on a straddle. First, what does under the gun mean?

Answer: It is the first seat to the left of the big blind and first to act before the flop

Under the gun or UTG for short is the player immediately to the left of the big blind and the first to act preflop. Because he is first to act, he is under the most pressure so the common idiom under the gun was used. It comes from the idea of having a gun pointed at you to make you do something.
3. Continuing with the example - While waiting for a seat to open up, you watch a $5/$10 Texas Hold'em game being played. Before the cards are dealt, the player under the gun (UTG) says he is putting on a straddle. What is a straddle?

Answer: It is basically a third blind and equal to twice the big blind

A straddle is a bet equal to twice the big blind and it allows the player making it to act last after the big blind rather than first. The player must declare it before looking at his cards. It forces all other players to at least call twice the big blind if they wish to play.

The straddler can also re-raise if he wishes when the action comes to him. If the action is raised prior to coming to him he can fold but his straddle stays in the pot.
4. A seat still has not become available in the game you want so you wander into the high roller section. You watch a $1k/$2k Hold'em game and a player puts on a sleeper straddle before the cards are dealt. What is a sleeper straddle?

Answer: A bet equal to twice the big blind made from middle or late position prior to looking at your cards

A sleeper straddle is much like the regular straddle in that it equals twice the big blind but it is done by a player not UTG. They can be in any seat other than the blinds or UTG. The advantage of the sleeper straddle is that it can be pulled back if someone raises prior to the action coming to the straddler. If action is folded to the straddler then the straddle becomes live and the straddler cannot take it back.
5. You finally get a seat at a $3/$6 Hold'em table and the cards are dealt. The action folds to you and you decide to limp. What have you just done?

Answer: Called the big blind

To limp means to call the big blind without raising. It is considered a weak play because it puts no pressure on the blinds and allows them to see a flop cheaply. The idea is to keep the pot small and hopefully see a flop without having to invest too much.
6. You are in a $3/$6 Hold'em game and the action folds to you. In this context action means your turn to do something. It encompasses all activities a player can do: check, bet, fold, call, or raise.

Answer: true

Action is a simple term but is applied in many ways at the poker table. An action flop, for example, means the flop is one that has the potential to induce action from one or more players. An action card does the same thing. In both cases it implies that there are many possible hands the players can hold that this flop helped and many different ways to play those hands.

It can also be used to let a player know its their turn when someone says, "Your action".
7. On the next hand every player limps into the pot. The dealer declares, "Okay we have a ________ pot." What kind of pot is this?

Answer: Family

A family pot is a pot in which all or almost all players enter the pot. It is rare but it does happen. A side pot is a pot that develops when one player is all in and is called by two or more players who still have chips left to bet. A pot develops between the remaining players that cannot be won by the all in player.

A split pot is when two or more players have the same hand and the pot is split between them. A jackpot is normally a special prize pool set aside for players who take a bad beat, usually Aces full or better getting beaten.

It is a prize pool collected from all of the games by the casino just for such purposes.
8. In the next hand you raise to four times the big blind and only the big blind calls you. Before the flop he says, "I check in the dark." What does "in the dark" mean?

Answer: It means he checks before seeing the flop

"In the dark" means a player acts before the next card or cards are seen. It is an attempt to put the pressure of acting first on their opponent. Players can either bet in the dark or check in the dark. Both actions are meant to confuse their opponents.
9. While playing the guy in the seat next to you leans over and says, "You see the guy in seat 5? He's a fish." What did he just tell you about the abilities of the player in seat 5?

Answer: A fish is a very bad player who gives his money away

A fish is a player who plays badly and loses his money. There is a phrase in the poker community that says, "Don't tap the aquarium," meaning don't upset a bad player because he may stop having fun and leave. Good players make their living off bad players and want them in the game as long as possible. Quote from conjelco.com's poker glossary.
10. We have identified what a fish is, now let's look at the phrase, "in the tank". The two terms are not necessarily linked. If a player is "in the tank" what is he doing?

Answer: He is thinking hard about his hand and what to do

"In the tank" or "tanking" means a player has slowed the action down and is thinking for a long time about what to do. Depending on the game, more leeway is allowed if more is on the line and the player has a tough decision to make. If he does not make his decision quickly enough though, a clock may be called on him meaning he has one minute to decide what to do or his hand will be dead.
