Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You and some friends are playing a home game of Texas Hold'em. You are planning a trip to Vegas in a couple of weeks and you are somewhat new to the game so your friends decide to test your knowledge of poker hand nicknames. They decide to make a side bet on who can fool you with fake names for the starting hands. First up Bob wins a hand with A-A. Four of your friends each give a supposed name for the hand and you have to decide which is not a real nickname for the hand.

Answer: Sue says they are called Death

Sue made up the name Death because the Ace of Spades is called the death card but it is not a nickname for A-A. All of the rest are legitimate names for A-A. Pocket Aces are the best possible starting hand in Texas Hold 'em. The odds of being dealt pocket Aces are 221 to 1.
2. The very next hand you look down at K-K in the pocket. You play the hand well and win a sizable pot. When you turn over your hand the table starts again with the side bet game. Which one of your friends has given you an incorrect nickname for K-K?

Answer: Fred says they are called Alabama Night Riders

Alabama Night Riders is a term for three kings not two. Four kings are known as the Four Horsemen, a reference to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Pocket Kings are also known as Ace Magnets. Along those lines, at a full table, 9 or 10 players, there is a four percent chance that if you have pocket Kings, someone else has pocket Aces.
3. The very next hand you are dealt Q-Q. Again you play the hand well and win. Your friends comment on your luck and decide to try to get their money back in the side game. Which name is not a nickname for Q-Q?

Answer: Fred says they are called Q- tips

Fred made up the name Q-tips. Your friends then tell you some other names for Q-Q are Flower Girls, Canadian Rockets, and Canadian Aces.
4. In the next hand Bob shows A-8 as his hole cards. He says A-8 is named the Dead Man's Hand in honor of Wild Bill Hickok. Is Bob telling you the truth?

Answer: Yes

Bob explains that although the term may have been used earlier to refer to other hands, since Wild Bill's death it has come to refer solely to Aces and eights. He says legend has it Wild Bill was holding two Aces and two Eights when he was shot and killed during a game of five-card draw in Deadwood, South Dakota on August 2, 1876. According to the legend, he continues, Wild Bill was holding the two black Aces and the two black Eights. Since A-8 is half of that famous hand, it is given that name in his honor.
5. After the next hand, Sue turns up A-K but loses the hand. Again everyone's attention turns to the side game as each of your friends gives a nickname for this hand. Who is trying to trick you this time?

Answer: Sue says it's called the Tucson Monster

Sues tells you Tucson Monster is actually a nickname for K-J not A-K. Fred says it is called the Anna Kournikova because they both look better than they play. George says it is called Walking Back to Houston for two possible reasons. The first reason and most prevalent today is that if you play it you will most likely lose and end up walking home.

The second was that in the past pros played it so well they would send their opponents walking home. Bob says it is called Big Slick because yes it looks good but any pair, even a pair of deuces beats it preflop.

He continues it is a very hard hand to play and therefore considered slippery or slick.
6. In the next hand Fred wins with K-J. But everyone's attention is beginning to be more on the side game than on the poker game as your friends are having fun trying to trick you. Who is the fraud among your friends this time?

Answer: George says its the Johnny Moss

George explains the Johnny Moss is A-T not K-J. Kojak and King John are obvious as to why so Sue and Bob don't even bother explaining. Fred says it is called the Harry Potter because J.K. Rowling is Harry's author and it is named after her first two initials.
7. On the next hand you look down at A-Q in the pocket. Right now you are more excited to play the side game than you are the real game but you play the hand and win a small pot. You turn it over and your friends go back to work. Which one is trying to bluff you with their nickname this round?

Answer: Bob says it's the Royal Couple

Bob tells you the Royal Couple is K-Q. Sues says Doyle Brunson has two hands named after him - the more famous T-2 because he won back to back WSOP Main Events with that hand and the A-Q because he hates to play it. Fred says the other two names are plays on Big Slick.
8. While playing George decides to test your knowledge of some of the famous players of the game. He bets you don't know which hand TJ Cloutier is famous for. Which hand is it?

Answer: J-9

George explains that TJ Cloutier is famous for the J-9 and specifically the J-9 of clubs. He continues by telling you that in one year TJ held the hand three different times at three different big money tables and flopped the straight flush all three times. As stated on http://www.online-poker-insider.com/articles/opi-t-j-cloutier-poker-legend.html.
9. It's getting late but your friends want to play a couple of more hands. On the next hand 9-9 is the winner. Again everyone is more interested in the side bet than in the action at the table. Which friend is trying to pull the wool over your eyes with their nickname on this hand?

Answer: George says it's named after Dolly Parton

George says the Dolly Parton is 9-5 after the movie she starred in. Bob tells you it is named after Wayne Gretzky because he wore 99. Sue reminds everyone Barbara Feldon was Agent 99 on Get Smart and therefore it goes by her name. Fred says it is named after Phil Hellmuth because he won the WSOP Main Event holding it.
10. It is the final hand of the night and you win it holding 8-8. It is also the last chance your friends get to trick you. Whose name is incorrect this time.

Answer: Sue says it's called Infinity Part Deux

Sue made up the nickname Infinity Part Deux. George says the other three are what 88 resemble in one way or another.
