Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a hand, 'free roll' and 'free card' mean the same thing.

Answer: False

A free roll is when there is no possibility you can lose the hand but there is a possibility you can win the hand. This occurs when both players have the same hand but only one of them can improve the hand and win. An example would be where both players hold AK but only one of them can get a flush. Free roll can also mean a tournament where you paid nothing to enter.

A free card just means your opponent did not bet when he could have so you get to see a card without paying anything. Many times giving another player a free card improves their hand so they beat you. This is why many players bet to "protect" their hand so they cannot be outdrawn.
2. You are playing in a No-Limit Hold'em tournament and you hold pocket Aces on the button. UTG bets three times the big blind and three other players call the bet. When it's your turn you raise 20 times the big blind. When it gets back to UTG he says to you, "I guess it's only going to be me and you, I'm all in." Everyone else folds and you call. What is the play you made called?

Answer: Isolating

To isolate an opponent is to make a bet big enough to drive out all other players so that you can get heads up or at least make it very costly for weaker hands to stay in the pot. Typically the more players in a pot the less value pocket Aces have because the more likely it is that someone will hit the flop.

A big raise UTG, under the gun, means the player is representing that he has a big hand. The three limpers either have weak hands or are trying to disguise the strength of their hands. A big raise here should work as an isolation play and help thin the players in the pot because only strong hands will usually stick around.
3. Which of the following terms in synonymous with 'going on a rush'?

Answer: Heater

Going on a rush is the same as going on a heater. In both cases it means you have been winning disproportionately more than is to be expected all things being equal. It can last several hands, several hours, several days, or even several months. Poker is a game of streaks and learning how to manage those streaks if half the challenge. Steaming means playing badly because you are losing.

A cooler is when you get very unlucky. Trapping is an attempt to extract chips from your opponent when you know you have the winning hand by slow playing.
4. In poker parlance what is a 'scare card'?

Answer: A card that freezes action because it could potentially beat you.

A scare card is a card that could potentially beat you. A good example of a scare card in Texas Hold'em is the following. You flop the nut straight but there are two of a suit on the board. The turn is the third of that suit. Your nut straight could now potentially be beaten by a flush so the wise thing to do would be to slow down your betting.

Another example would be if you flop the nut flush but the board pairs on the turn or river. Once the board pairs the potential for someone having a full house or even four of a kind exists and you would be beat.
5. If you are watching a Texas Hold'em show on TV and the commentator says, "the river is a blank", what does he mean?

Answer: A blank is a card that seems to help no one.

A blank is a card that would appear to help no one because of what is already on the board. It could possibly be a Deuce, but it is not a term used exclusively for a Deuce. An example would be: On a board of Ah Qh 3d 7s, the river is 8c. Here the 8c looks like a blank.

It does not complete a flush, it fails to connect a straight of any sort, and it appears that it would be of little help. Usually on TV poker shows you can see the hole cards so if the host says it is a blank then you can be sure it helped no one.
6. If a player accuses another player of 'slow rolling', what does it mean?

Answer: It means slowly showing the winning hand.

Slow rolling means that a player waits until the last possible moment to reveal the winning hand. It has nothing to do with slow playing, smooth calling or the movement you take in making a bet.

Slow rolling is considered very poor etiquette because it can give the losing player false hope. In most casinos the player who last initiated action is supposed to turn over their hand first and then the remaining players in clockwise order starting to the left of the first player to expose his hand. Although this is the technical way it is supposed to happen, most players turn over their hand immediately if they think they have the winner and waiting is considered rude.
7. In Texas Hold'em, if your hand has been 'counterfeited' what has happened?

Answer: A card has come that makes you less likely to win the hand outright.

Counterfeiting occurs when a card on the board makes your hand less likely to win. This may result in losing the pot completely or splitting the pot with a tie. An example of tying would be if you held 87 and you opponent holds A7. The flop comes T96 rainbow.

At this point you have the nut straight. But if another 8 comes on the turn your hand is counterfeited because now your opponent also has a straight. An example of losing outright would be if you held A9 and your opponent held AQ. The flop comes A9J.

At this point you have two pair and your opponent only has top pair. If a Jack comes on the turn your hand would now be counterfeited because both of you would have the same two pair but your opponent would have a better kicker and you would lose.

The only hope now is that another Ace or Jack comes or a King so that you can split the pot or a 9 to outright win the pot.
8. A 'ragged flop' in Texas Hold'em is a flop that has the potential for making very strong hands, such as straights, flushes, and full houses.

Answer: False

That description is the exact opposite of what is meant by a ragged flop. A ragged flop is one that would appear to help no one because none of the cards are the same suit or close enough together to support straights. It usually denotes cards on the lower end of the ranking scale too. A flop of Qd 7c 2s looks very ragged.
9. What does it mean to 'jam a pot'?

Answer: Push all in or raise the maximum.

'Jamming a pot' is usually used in a less flattering light as it denotes quick, thoughtless action. A player may do this so as to intimidate their opponents by sheer aggression or to make it look like the decision was so easy that quick action was called for. In either case it is meant to deceive because either your hand is weak and you want to appear strong or it is strong and you want to appear thoughtless.

It can also be combined with ram for ram and jam to describe a player who bets and raises frequently and aggressively. This player is called a rammer-jammer.
10. What does it mean if you have 'the clock called on you' or 'you are put on the clock'?

Answer: You have 60 seconds to act or your hand is dead.

Normally leeway is given to players to make decisions and specific time frames are not enforced. But if a player abuses this right by continually taking long amounts of time or is taking too long in a specific hand, another player can call a clock on them or put them on the clock.

At that point a tournament director or floor person comes to the table and the player has 60 seconds to make his decision. If no money is put into the pot by the end of that time then the player's hand is dead.
