Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You are playing in a poker tournament and you start off in the hijack seat. Which seat is this?

Answer: It is two seats right of the Button

The Hijack seat is the seat one right of the Cutoff and two right of the Button. It is so-called because of the tendency of players in late position to raise to try to steal or hijack the blinds.
2. You are in a No-Limit Hold'em tournament and you bet half your stack on a hand against one opponent. He looks at you and says, half to himself and half to you, "I guess you're pot-committed huh?" What does he mean by this?

Answer: He is saying you are committed to call if he pushes all in because of how much you have in the pot

Pot-committed means you are forced to call normally because of how much you have in the pot already. Here is a list of the most common reasons a player is pot-committed:
1) The amount of chips you have already committed to the pot
2) The amount of chips you have left versus the size of the pot
3) If the pot odds are better than 2 to 1
4) The size of the blinds compared to your remaining chip stack if you fold.
Sometimes you are put in a position where folding is not a good move even if you are gambling with the call.
3. You have AK suited in the hole in a Texas Hold'em tournament and a player has pushed all in. You call and they turn over pocket eights. Your opponent declares, "We have a race." What is a race?

Answer: It is the same as a coin flip in which each player has an even chance to win

Race and coin flip are synonymous terms. They described a situation in which both players have around a 50% chance to win the hand preflop. Most of the times races come about when an under pair is up against two overcards. Mathematically the underpair is usually a slight favorite but the practical difference is minuscule.

It is conventional wisdom that you must be able to win races in order to win tournaments.
4. In poker vernacular, a calling station is the front desk of a cardroom where they call your name when a table becomes available.

Answer: false

A calling station is a player who plays lots of pots but habitually calls rather than raising or folding. Over the long run this style is unprofitable both because it leads to overplaying weak hands and allows your opponent the opportunity to outdraw you if you have a strong hand.
5. In poker, what is rabbit hunting?

Answer: Asking the dealer to see what cards would have come after a hand is over

Rabbit hunting means to seek to see the cards that would have come if the hand had not ended, either on the flop, turn or river. It is illegal in most casinos and frowned upon by many if not most players.
6. If you have ever played poker you are sure to have heard a bad beat story or two, maybe even told some yourself. Of the following, which one is like a bad beat?

Answer: Cooler

Cooler is very similar to a bad beat but there is a distinction between the two. Bad beat usually refers to a hand where you are heavily favored but end up losing. A cooler on the other hand usually refers to a hand in which both you and your opponent have strong hands, you just happen to have one not as strong as his. Both are terms for losing in an unfortunate way and are used interchangeably despite the technical distinction.
7. You are playing in a Hi/Lo poker game. You and your opponent turn over your hands and the dealer says, "You scoop the pot, sir." What is he telling you that you just did?

Answer: You won both the high and the low and therefore win the whole pot

Scooping the pot usually refers to having both the high and the low in a hi/lo game and therefore winning the entire pot. Many times in these games pots are split because one player has the high and one player has the low. But in some games the low must meet certain requirements, such as in eight or better, and therefore a pot can be scooped by the high because no low qualifies.
8. You are holding AQ suited in a Hold'em tournament. The flop comes AQJ rainbow and you check to your opponent. He pushes all in and you quickly call. He turns over K9 and says to you, "Oh man, I am drawing thin." What does he mean by drawing thin?

Answer: It means he has very few outs to win the hand

Drawing thin means you have very few outs to win a hand. In this hand your opponent would only have four outs for the win, the four Tens in the deck. This would give him a straight and you would only have two pair. You would then be the one drawing thin with only four outs, either one of the two remaining Aces or one of the two remaining Queens to give you a full house.
9. In the last question I described a flop as rainbow. What is a rainbow flop in poker?

Answer: A flop where three different suits are present

A rainbow flop is a flop of three different suits. Flops like this are considered safer than flops where two or more of the same suit come up because it makes flushes harder to come by. Even if you have two of one suit in your hand and only one on the board, that only gives you three to the flush and you must hit runner runner to make it.

Many times players will push all in if the flop makes them four flushed. Rainbow flops eliminate that move.
10. In poker parlance, an example of the idiot end of a straight is having two cards to complete the bottom end of a straight on a board with three sequential straight cards.

Answer: True

The idiot end of the straight and the sucker end of the straight are synonymous. Both mean you have hit your straight but it is possible for someone to have a better straight by completing the straight on the high end. For example, if you have 78 and the flop comes 9TJ, you have completed the straight but your opponent could easily hold KQ or Q8 for a higher straight.
