Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What term in Texas Hold'em is NOT used to describe pocket aces?

Answer: Big Slick

Big Slick is the name for Ace-King.
2. In Texas Hold'em, about how big an underdog are pocket jacks (JJ) to pocket queens (QQ)?

Answer: 4.5 to 1

Pocket Jacks are a 4.5 to 1 underdog to queens, and this holds true for any lower pocket pair to a higher pocket pair. The lower pocket pair is forced to draw to 2 cards in the deck, making it a substantial underdog.
3. What is the best possible low hand called in Hi/Lo games? (Omaha hi/lo, 7 card stud hi/lo)

Answer: Wheel

The Wheel is A2345. It's the best possible low hand, and also a straight ace to five. Often a player will win both the Hi (straight) and the Lo with the wheel.
4. Who is the self proclaimed "brat" of poker?

Answer: Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth has won multiple World Series of Poker bracelets, including the main event in 1989. Phil gets his reputation by speaking his mind after an opponent beats him, usually by some sort of outdraw or "injustice."
"There are guys playing King-eight...King-deuce. It's unbelievable."
5. What does the poker term "slow playing" mean?

Answer: Acting and betting weakly when you have a strong hand to induce your opponent into thinking you have nothing, so they bet into your big hand.

Slow playing is a great technique for poker players. Especially if they are playing no-limit. In order to maximize profits with a huge hand, many times slow playing is the way to go.
6. In Omaha Hi/Lo, what is the best four card starting hand?

Answer: Ace-two, ace-three, double suited

Ace-two, Ace-three, double suited is a huge starting hand in Omaha hi/lo. Example: As2sAc3c. With that hand you have multiple shots at the best possible high high hand AND the best possible low. You can easily get the best low for the board, and the best high with a nut flush.
7. Who won the first two World Series of Poker main events?

Answer: Johnny Moss

Johnny Moss won the first two World Series of Poker main events (1970 and 1971).
8. What is another name for a card cheat?

Answer: Mechanic

Mechanics are known as highly skilled card cheats.
9. Who was the winner of the 2004 California State Poker Championship?

Answer: Ben Affleck

Surprisingly enough, Ben Affleck could hang with the pro's, and took home first place.
10. What does the poker term "lay down" mean?

Answer: Folding a generally strong hand because you are convinced that your opponent holds a better hand.

"Laying down" a hand in poker can be taken as a sign of respect to the person you are folding to. Laying a hand down usually means it's still a decent hand. Take for example, the poker film 'Rounders'. One of the hands at the end of the movie, the board reads A-3-5. Matt Damon's cards are A5. He has a strong hand, top 2 pair, but he is still convinced he's beat because of Teddy KGB's tell.
"I'm laying this down Teddy...because you've got 2-4 and I'm not drawing against a made hand."
