Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Clint Eastwood made a series of movies as "The Man with No Name". In which television series, also a western, did he co-star?

Answer: Rawhide

"Rawhide" ran from 1959 to early 1966, making it one of the longest running western series on television. The basic story was a cattle drive from Texas to Missouri, and Eastwood played Rowdy Yates, one of the drovers. It proved to be his career breakthrough role.

He went on to find fame and fortune in, among others, "A Fistful of Dollars", "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good The Bad and The Ugly".
2. Which James Bond first found fame as Ivanhoe and Simon Templar?

Answer: Roger Moore

Roger Moore started his career as a male model for knitting patterns. Despite being given a contract by MGM in the 1950s he failed to make a name for himself in film. It was television that gave him stardom, first in "Ivanhoe", and than as Simon Templar in "The Saint".

This ran for 118 episodes and was a worldwide success. When Sean Connery stepped down from the James Bond role Roger Moore was approached, and made his debut in "Live and Let Die" (1973). The way in which he played Bond owed much to his portrayal of "The Saint".
3. Telly Savalas had major roles in films such as "The Birdman of Alcatraz" and "The Dirty Dozen", but found greater fame on the small screen playing which detective?

Answer: Kojak

Telly Savalas had a very successful film career long before "Kojak". He was Oscar nominated for his role in "Birdman of Alcatraz". However, the lollipop sucking Kojak, which ran for five seasons, became famous worldwide, winning him two Golden Globes and an Emmy. His brother George also appeared in the series as his partner, Detective Stavros.
4. Who starred in the television series "Marcus Welby MD" and "Hotel", as well as having leading roles in the films "Capricorn One" and "The Amityville Horror"?

Answer: James Brolin

James Brolin's first contract was with 20th Century Fox, where he had small roles in films such as "Fantastic Voyage" and "Von Ryan's Express". In 1968 he got the role of Dr Kiley in "Marcus Welby M.D.", a very successful television series. This led to larger and better film roles, and he even tested for the role of James Bond when Roger Moore was thinking of stepping down.

In 1983 he returned to television in "Hotel", which ran until 1988.
5. If you see the words "greed is good", or "bunny boiler", you immediately think of Michael Douglas. Which television series of the 1970s gave him his first major role?

Answer: The Streets of San Francisco

Although, in the 1960s, he had had some work in low budget movies Michael Douglas's breakthrough role was in "The Streets of San Francisco" alongside Karl Malden, who he came to regard as a mentor. His best known film roles are Gandalf in "Lord of The Rings Trilogy" and Magneto in "X-Men".
8. Joan Collins had roles in several popular films, including "The Stud" and "The Bitch", but which television series gave her what is possibly her best known role?

Answer: Dynasty

Joan Collins was a product of the Rank film studio system. This found and trained potential stars, and graduates from the system included Diana Dors, Shirley Eaton, Kay Kendall and Christopher Lee. Joan Collins appeared in several low budget British films before moving to Hollywood.

However the role which brought her international recognition was Alexis Colby in "Dynasty", which she played from the start of the second series until the programme was cancelled in May 1989 at the end of the 9th series.
9. Which actor first found fame as part of a comic duo in the television series "Not Only - But Also"?

Answer: Dudley Moore

In the 1970s he moved to Hollywood and starred in such films as "10" and "Arthur".
10. Which Hollywood star dipped briefly into television work, and made a short lived series with Roger Moore as his co-star?

Answer: Tony Curtis

In 1971 he appeared with Roger Moore in the television series "The Persuaders".
This failed to make an impact on American audiences, although it was very popular in Britain, Europe and Australia, and was cancelled after only one season.
