Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Once considered a rising superstar in the industry, Latin heartthrob Al Perez actually got his big break in Mid South in a tag team. The team was called "The Wildcats" and they even held the Mid South Tag Team Titles in 1985. Who was Perez's partner?

Answer: Wendell Cooley

Legendary wrestler and promoter Bill Watts paired Perez and Wendell Cooley together in 1985 and dubbed the team "The Wildcats". In 1987 Perez went to WCCW where he eventually defeated Kevin Von Erich for the WCCW Heavyweight Title in August 1987. In 1988 Perez and his manager Gary Hart went to WCW where Al had some great matches with Steve Williams, Nikita Koloff and Sting.

Then in 1990 Perez went to the WWF where he was buried as a television jobber, routinely losing to the likes of Koko B. Ware and Tito Santana.

This ruined Perez's career and two years later he was gone from the business. Cooley held on to "The Wildcat" moniker and wrestled until the mid 1990s.
2. One of the wrestling industry's biggest stars of the 1990s, Scott Hall actually began his career in a tag team. In late 1984 Hall was paired with Dan Spivey in the NWA in a duo that wore furry boots and masks. What was that team?

Answer: The American Starship

Scott Hall got his big break as Coyote, teaming with another young talent Dan Spivey aka Eagle as The American Starship. The duo wore red, white and blue masks and furry boots and although the gimmick was lame you could see their potential. The highlight for the team was wrestling The Koloffs and The Andersons in televised matches.

In the summer of 1985 Hall went to the AWA where he won The AWA Tag Team Titles with Curt Hennig the following year. Hall really hit the big time in the 1990s when he portrayed Razor Ramon in the WWF and founded "The NWO" in WCW. Spivey had stints in the WWF, WCW and the UWF but never reached the same level of success as his one time partner Scott Hall.
3. This duo had a very brief stint in the WWE in the summer and fall of 2006 where they were managed by the lovely Michelle McCool. Their big highlight was defeating WWE Tag Team Champions Brian Kendrick and Paul London in a non title match on Smackdown. Who was this duo?

Answer: Idol Stevens and KC James

Idol Stevens and KC James where brought up from the Ohio training territory as the "Teachers Pets" of Michelle McCool. They received a decent push and even defeated WWE Tag Team Champions Paul London and Brian Kendrick in a televised non title match in September 2006.

They were subsequently buried in a series of rematches including one at "No Mercy" on October 8, 2006 and were soon gone. Eventually in the summer of 2012 Idol Stevens made his return to the WWE as the intellectual, arrogant Damien Sandow.
4. Sometimes two completely different tag teams in different promotions with use the same name at different times. In 1988, Lex Luger formed a short lived tag team with Barry Windham that eventually won the NWA Tag Team Titles. In late 1988 in the WWF Slick paired Akeem and The Big Boss Man together in hopes of winning the WWF Tag Team Titles. What were both these teams called?

Answer: The Twin Towers

When Lex Luger severed ties with The Four Horsemen he immediately turned to Barry Windham to aid him in his subsequent struggle with them. The duo of Windham and Luger dubbed themselves "The Twin Towers" and won the NWA Tag Team Titles at the very first "Clash of Champions" in March 1988.

The two only held the belts for less than a month as Windham betrayed Luger and joined The Four Horsemen. In late 1988 manager Slick paired The Big Boss Man with the "reborn" Akeem and this duo also was called "The Twin Towers".

After a brief feud with Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage, the two attempted to defeat Demolition for the WWF Tag Team Titles and failed.
5. In the fall of 2006 weekly vignettes began to be shown on WWE telecasts, hyping the arrival of this street wise, street smart team. What was the name of this team which lived "The Thug Lifetsyle"?

Answer: Cryme Tyme

JTG and big Shad Gaspar were a duo that called themselves Cryme Tyme and they had some hilarious vignettes in the fall of 2006. Originally meant to be heels the gimmick was so popular that the powers that be had no choice but to make them faces. The duo challenged often for the WWE Tag Team Titles but never succeeded in winning them and Shad was released in early 2010.
6. In 1983, the album "Thriller" by Michael Jackson was the biggest pop culture rage. In an attempt to piggy back that success Koko B. Ware and Norvell Austin donned white, speckled gloves and red leather jackets in a tag team. What was that duo called?

Answer: The Pretty Young Things

Norvell Austin and Koko B. Ware formed a tag team called "The Pretty Young Things" in Memphis in 1984. Their gimmick was obviously a couple of Michael Jackson wannabes but they did enjoy three runs as AWA Southern Tag Team Champions between 1984 and 1985. Ware and Austin's biggest rivalry was with the famed 1980s duo of Stan Lane and Steve Keirn aka "The Fabulous Ones".

In mid 1985 the two went their separate ways with Koko going to Mid South and Austin splitting time between Florida and Memphis.
7. In early 1988, a young manager named Diamond Dallas Page paired Pat Tanaka and Paul Diamond together in the AWA and called them Badd Company. Around the same time in the Stampede territory there was a duo which called themselves Bad Company, note the spelling difference. Who was this duo?

Answer: Brian Pillman and Bruce Hart

The first Bad Company was formed in 1987 in Stu Hart's Stampede promotion and was comprised of his son Bruce and a young wrestler named Brian Pillman. The team won The Stampede International Tag Team Titles twice and wore shades and leather jackets, almost a "poor man's" version of the popular WWF Hart Foundation.

In the AWA a loudmouthed, obnoxious manager named Diamond Dallas Page joined together Pat Tanaka and Paul Diamond and dubbed them Badd Company. The team defeated The Midnight Rockers for the AWA Tag Team Titles in March 1988 and would hold them for a year.

In late 1990 when Akio Sato bolted from the WWF, Pat Tanaka turned to old ally Paul Diamond aka Kato to fill the void in The Orient Express. Ironically their biggest rivalry would be against The Rockers.
8. In 1995, ECW Head Paul Heyman decided to sign a relatively unknown tag team made up of John Kronus and Perry Saturn and push them to the moon. The duo solidified Heyman's faith in them by becoming an exciting and revolutionary tag team. What were they known as?

Answer: The Eliminators

The team of Perry Saturn and John Kronus aka "The Eliminators" was one of the most exciting and successful duos of the 1990s. The team actually began in The USWA in 1994 before catching the eye of Heyman who quickly had them come to Philadelphia. The high flying, daredevil style of Kronus meshed very well with the mat based attack of Saturn.

The duo won the ECW Tag Team Titles on three occasions and their bloody feuds with The Gangstas, The Pitbulls and Public Enemy were ECW as its very best.
9. One of the most successful tag teams of the 1990s was without a doubt Stevie Ray and Booker T, The Harlem Heat. The duo arrived in WCW in the summer of 1993 and were managed by Colonel Robert Parker. Although they were called Harlem Heat, their individual names were different. What were they?

Answer: Kane and Kole

Real life brothers Booker and Lash Huffman arrived in WCW in the summer of 1993 where they were managed by Colonel Robert Parker. The original plan was to have them wear chains and shackles a la escaped members of a chain gang but the angle was scrapped at the 11th hour.

In 1994 the late Sherri Martel aka Sister Sherri began to manage the duo and subsequently changed their names to Booker T and Stevie Ray. The duo was very talented and won the WCW Tag Team Titles an incredible ten times before the promotion folded.

After the demise of WCW Stevie Ray quietly retired but Booker T has enjoyed great success in both the WWE and TNA.
10. After a run as a member of Paul Jones "Army" in 1986 - 1987, the late Pez Whatley aka Shaska Whatley formed a tag team with Tiger Conway Junior. What was this spiffy duo called?

Answer: The Jive Tones

In the spring of 1987, Shaska Whatley formed a tag team with Tiger Conway Junior that was known as The Jive Tones. Whatley and Conway wore identical top hats, tuxedo jackets, bow ties, carried canes and were not shy about bustin' a move or two. The team competed in the NWA and the UWF where they challenged The Lightning Express for the UWF Tag Team Titles during the summer of 1987.

The duo was talented but never really got over and was gone by mid 1988. Sadly Pez Whatley died in January 2005 after suffering a massive coronary at age 54, after his retirement he had become a trainer at The WCW Power Plant.
11. One of the biggest upsets of all time happened on September 29, 1985 when the almost unbeatable Road Warriors were defeated for the AWA Tag Team Titles. What duo defeated Animal and Hawk on this night?

Answer: "Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin and "Mr. Electricity" Steve Regal

The defeat of the mighty Road Warriors at the hands of Jimmy Garvin and Steve Regal (not the Steven/William Regal of WCW/WWE) was one of the biggest upsets in wrestling history. The Road Warriors had taken the wrestling world by storm since their arrival in 1983 and to be defeated by duo like Garvin and Regal was unfathomable. To his credit Garvin was no slouch but Regal was nothing more than a glorified light heavyweight, in addition the duo had help from The Fabulous Freebirds.

As Animal hoisted up Garvin for bodyslam, Michael Hayes unbeknownst to the referee, hit Garvin in the back thus causing Animal to topple onto the canvas with Jimmy on top for the pin.
12. This rather offensive duo got their start in the AWA in 1987 where they challenged The Midnight Rockers for the AWA Tag Team Titles. They are much better remembered for their stints in the WWF and WCW where the won each promotions Tag Team Titles. Who was this team?

Answer: The Nasty Boys

Jerry Saggs began wrestling as a preliminary wrestler in the AWA in late 1985, the following year Brian Knobbs got his big break as "The Terrorist". In early 1987 the legendary Verne Gagne decided to pair the two together and dubbed them The Nasty Boys.

The duo immediately was reviled as they would often spit at opponents and fans or rub the faces of opponents into their sweaty underarms. The duo really hit big time when they defeated The Hart Foundation in 1991 to win the WWF Tag Team Titles. After a brief face turn the duo was terminated in mid 1993 and signed with WCW that fall. Before an injury ended Saggs career in 1996, the two would win the WCW Tag Team Titles three times.
13. In early 1984 General Skandor Akbar brought a masked team called The Super Destroyers to WCCW. The duo actually were brothers who would have a successful stint in the AWA from 1985-1987. What was that team known as?

Answer: The Long Riders

Brothers Scott and Bill Irwin donned masks as The Super Destroyers in WCCW in 1984 where they were members of General Skandor Akbar's "Devastation Inc" stable. In 1985 the brothers arrived in the AWA where for the next two years they were constant challengers for the AWA Tag Team Titles. Earlier in his career Scott Irwin wrestled as Eric in the tag team of The Yukon Lumberjacks that won the WWF Tag Team Titles in 1977.

In 1996 Bill Irwin had a forgettable stint in the WWF where he wore a hockey jersey and was called "The Goon". Scott Irwin died in September 1987 of a brain tumor at age 35.
14. This team were among the last batch of wrestlers to be trained by Verne Gagne in his famed training camp. The duo won the AWA Tag Team Titles in 1989 and later had a two year stint in the WWF. What was the team called in the AWA?

Answer: The Destruction Crew

"Mean" Mike Enos and Wayne "The Train" Bloom formed a tag team called The Destruction Crew that was managed by "Luscious" Johnny Valiant in the AWA. The duos gimmick was being members of a demolition crew and they wore hardhats, goggles and carried sledgehammers.

In October 1989 they defeated Ken Patera and Brad Rheinghans for the AWA Tag Team Titles and held them until August 1990. Many consider Bloom and Enos the last solid team to hold the once coveted titles. After the demise of the AWA in 1991 the team went to the WWF where their gimmick was a complete turnaround. From 1991-1993 they portrayed Beau and Blake Beverly, two spoiled rich brothers who were managed by The Genius.
15. On August 24, 1985, Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo were defeated for the WWF Tag Team Titles by a duo that called itself "The Dream Team". Who were the original members of "The Dream Team"?

Answer: Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake

In the spring of 1985 Greg Valentine was paired with an eccentric newcomer named Brutus Beefcake and the team was dubbed "The Dream Team". After Valentine lost the WWF Intercontinental Title to Tito Santana in July 1985, the duo began a serious run for the WWF Tag Team Titles.

Originally managed by both Jimmy Hart and Johnny Valiant, the team eventually was handled by Valiant alone. It was Valiant who helped his duo win the WWF Tag Team Titles in The famed Philadelphia Spectrum in August 1985. The team held the belts for nearly eight months before losing them to The British Bulldogs at "Wrestlemania II".

The following year Beefcake was replaced by Dino Bravo but this "Dream Team" lasted only for several months mainly because Bravo and Valentine did not get along.
