Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bert and Ernie are working on Ernie's bicycle when Bert says to Ernie, "Hey Ernie, you know what the tire on your bicycle reminds me of?" "No Bert, what?" replies Ernie. "It reminds me of the poker hand that consists of the cards A2345," Bert explains. "Hey kids, do you know what this hand is called?"

Answer: The wheel

"The ace, deuce, trey, four, and five or A2345 is called the wheel," Bert explains. "It is the lowest straight possible. When the cards are all of the same suit it makes a straight flush and is called the steel wheel. In many high low games this is one of the strongest hands because it has the potential of winning on the high side and is the nut low."
2. Mr. and Mrs. Robinson were dressed up like a king and queen for the Halloween party and each had a big heart on their chest. When asked what they were supposed to be they replied, "Why a royal flush of course." Which of these hands represents a royal flush?

Answer: Ace of hearts, King of hearts, Queen of hearts, Jack of hearts, 10 of hearts

Gordon says, "The answer is the Ace of hearts, King of hearts, Queen of hearts, Jack of hearts, 10 of hearts and is noted like this AhKhQhJhTh. A royal flush is just a special straight flush in that it includes the five highest cards by rank in the same suit. No hand can beat a royal flush and it is, therefore, called the nuts. One year at the World Series of Poker one player had four aces but he lost to a royal flush."
3. Snuffy decided he wanted to get all dressed up one day and put on pants. Because he has four legs, he would need two pair of pants. This reminded him of the poker hand two pair. Which of these hands is two pair?

Answer: Jack of hearts, Jack of clubs, 9 of spades, 9 of diamonds, 2 of clubs

Snuffy says, "The Jack of hearts, Jack of clubs, 9 of spades, 9 of diamonds, 2 of clubs (JhJc9s9d2c) is two pair. The Ace of spades, Ace of hearts, Ace of diamonds, King of hearts, King of spades would be a full house. The 2 of spades, 2 of diamonds, 7 of hearts, 6 of heart, Jack of hearts would be a pair. And the 3 of clubs, 4 of clubs, 5 of clubs, 6 of clubs, 7 of clubs would be a straight flush.

When deciding which hand wins when both players have two pair, first the top pair is compared. If that does not determine a winner then the second pair is compared. If that does not determine a winner then the last card in the hand is compared. If that is the same then the pot is split."
4. Count von Count decides to give a lecture on the number four. "A car has four wheels and a barber shop quartet has four singers but when is two pair really four of a kind?" he queries. "Which of these hands below is an example of two pair being four of a kind?"

Answer: Two red kings and two black kings with any other card

"I tried to trick you but clearly you are too smart for that," the Count admits and goes on to explain, "Two red kings and two black kings is four of a kind because it is four kings, their color does not matter. Four of a kind is also known as quads. The two red deuces and two black 4's with a red 4 would be a full house.

The 5 of hearts, 6 of hearts, 7 of hearts, 8 of hearts, 9 of hearts would be a straight flush. The 3 of spades, 3 of clubs, 3 of diamonds, queen of heart, jack of spades would be three of a kind."
5. "Kermit the Frog here reporting on a Christmas tradition," Kermit says. "In the twelve days of Christmas my true love gave to me a partridge in a certain tree. The type of tree is a homophone for a poker hand consisting of two cards of the same rank. Which poker hand is this?"

Answer: Pair

Kermit explains that pair and pear are homophones, words that are pronounced the same but have different meanings. Homophones can either be spelled the same or differently, it does not matter. In poker a pair is one of the lowest hands that will normally win a pot. In five card poker the probability of being dealt a pair is a little over 42%.
6. "The three bears in the story of Goldilocks could be a poker hand if they were cards," Big Bird tells Snuffy. "Three of the phrases or words below belong together because they are names for this poker hand but one does not." Big Bird then begins singing: "One of these things is not like the others One of these things just doesn't belong Can you tell which thing is not like the others By the time I finish my song?"

Answer: Quads

Big Bird tells Snuffy, "Quads is the same as four of a kind, not three of a kind. Trips, a set, and three of a kind are all names of hands that have three cards of the same rank. In hole card games the term set is usually used when the player has two of the same rank in the hole and one on the board.

The hand is called trips when the player only has one card of the rank in the hole and two on the board. Three of a kind beats two pair, a pair, and high card but nothing else."
7. Cookie Monster comes to Mr. Hooper's store and wants to buy two chocolate chip cookies and three peanut butter cookies. Gordon's nephew Chris points out to Cookie Monster that his cookie order looks exactly like a poker hand. Which poker hand has two of one rank of cards and three of another rank?

Answer: Full house

Chris says, "A hand that has both a pair and three of a kind is called a full house. Another name for it is a full boat. A full house beats both a straight and a flush but it does not beat a straight flush. In hole card games, if there is a pair on the board, the likelihood of someone having a full house becomes much greater and it makes straights and flushes very vulnerable. If the board has two pair it is almost a near certainty that someone has probably filled up, meaning they have one card in their hand to complete trips and therefore the full house."
8. Oscar the Grouch is being his grumpy old self when Ruthie comes to him and asks what the problem is. Oscar says, "I can't remember what a flush is in poker. Can you help me out?"

Answer: Ruthie replies, "A flush is five cards of the same suit."

Ruthie goes on to explain, "In poker there are 5,148 possible five card card combinations that will give you a flush, 40 of these are also straight flushes. The probability of getting a flush in a game where you see seven cards like Texas Hold'em or Seven Card Stud is only a little over 3%.

A flush beats a straight, three of a kind, two pair, and a pair but loses to a royal flush, a straight flush, four of a kind and a full house."
9. "Hey kids," Grover says to the neighborhood kids. "I need some help. There is a poker hand that is a homophone for a narrow passage of water between two land masses. Two more famous of these geographic features would be the Bering and the ___ of Gibraltar. Do you know which poker hand this is?"

Answer: Straight

"That would be strait and straight," Bobby declares.
"Very good Bobby," states Grover. "A strait is a homophone of straight. The Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia and the Strait of Gibraltar between Europe and Africa are two of the more famous ones. In poker a straight is any five cards in sequential order by rank but not of the same suit. If they are also the same suit then it is called a straight flush. An example of a normal straight would be the 5 of hearts, 6 of spades, 7 of diamonds, 8 of hearts, 9 of clubs."
10. Sherlock Hemlock speaks into the camera: "Okay kids I have a riddle for you, one that has stumped me for a long time. Are you ready? Here goes: You have two five card poker hands. Poker hand A is always a form of poker hand B but poker hand B is not always a form of poker hand A. Three of the choices below fit this riddle but which one does NOT?"

Answer: A full house is always four of a kind but four of a kind is not always a full house

The announcer explains: "A full house is never four of a kind and four of a kind is never a full house. A full house is made up of three of a kind and a pair. The other three statements are all true. A royal flush is just a special straight flush that consists of the top five cards (AKQJT). On the opposite end of the spectrum would be the steel wheel, which is a straight flush made from the lowest five cards (A2345)."
