Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'Kuala Lumpur', the fifth episode of the second series, the crew of MJN Air are on stand-by and, while Carolyn takes the opportunity to try to improve Arthur's stewarding skills Martin discovers that Douglas is running an illegal pub at Fitton airfield under what name?

Answer: The Flap and Throttle

While Martin is searching for an empty room on the airfield to turn into a 'pilot's lounge' he discovers that Douglas and the other men who work on the airfield have been running a secret pub in an old scrapped fuselage for some time. Shocked by this flagrant transgression of the rules and also hurt that everybody has been keeping this hang-out a secret from him, Martin's initial reaction is to tell Carolyn about the pub and have it closed down but when the pub regulars seem delighted to see him and keen for him to join them he is flattered into turning a blind eye.

Unfortunately, getting to hang out with the 'cool kids' is not as much fun as Martin had hoped as they will not let him talk about aviation and only want to discuss football, about which Martin knows nothing. Elsewhere Carolyn is taking the opportunity to improve Arthur's dire stewarding skills by role-playing a range of difficult passengers for Arthur to deal with with surprisingly positive results.
2. In the sixth and final episode of the second series, 'Limerick', the crew have been chartered to deliver a mysterious box from Hong Kong to Ireland and Martin is smugly satisfied about having picked up what 'genuine' luxury item in Hong Kong?

Answer: Watch

Martin is convinced that the watch he bought in Hong Kong is a genuine Patek Philippe but Douglas remains unconvinced and is proved to be in the right when the watch begins playing the theme tune to 'The Simpsons'. 'Limerick' takes place in real-time as the crew attempt to pass the time on an interminably long journey by playing word games including composing various limericks and trying to think of celebrities with 'evil-sounding' names.

When Arthur asks what is in the box they are transporting Douglas instigates a game of 'twenty questions' but when Arthur finally works out what is in the box he wishes he had never asked. Elsewhere Arthur is trying to learn the NATO phonetic alphabet, we learn the difference between an admiral's pie and a mere fisherman's pie and some heart-to-heart conversations take place on the flight deck.
3. In the Christmas special 'Molokai', broadcast between series two and three, the crew are forced by Carolyn to give up what should have been their Christmas Day holiday to fly a Russian yacht-broker from Tokyo to the island of Molokai in Hawaii. Near the beginning of the episode Arthur attempts to spread some Christmas spirit on the plane by delivering an inaccurate version of which carol?

Answer: God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

Arthur bursts into the flight deck on Christmas Day morning singing 'get dressed you merry gentlemen' leading to an argument about the correct lyrics to the carol. The crew discuss their plans for Christmas Day in Tokyo involving lounging by the pool in Martin's case, ingesting 'heroic quantities' of sushi in Douglas' case and having turkey and all the trimmings at the 'Auspicious Pig and Whistle Old England Style Happy Pub' in Arthur's.

The crew are generally in good spirits until Carolyn calls them to announce that they will be spending the rest of the day flying a rich yacht-broker, Mr Alyakhin, whom Carolyn is keen to impress in order to procure his business, from Tokyo to Molokai.

They grudgingly agree to this but Arthur is obviously heartbroken about missing the Christmas festivities so Martin and Douglas do their best to make sure Arthur gets to celebrate Christmas after all.

Unfortunately, the lack of resources on Gerti means that Martin and Douglas are forced to improvise by fashioning an umbrella into a Christmas tree, drying out strips of chicken on the air-conditioning vent to make it taste more like turkey and substituting a Christmas stocking with a sock containing an orange Tic Tac, a sachet of sugar with a mouse drawn on it and some coins with chocolate smeared on them. Meanwhile, Carolyn is pulling out all the stops to impress Mr Alyakhin, Douglas is trying to get hold of an expensive bottle of wine and we learn about MJN's other crew members who all, coincidentally, have Christmas-themed names.
4. The first episode of series three, 'Newcastle', sees MJN flying two pilots from which other airline to Newcastle to cover for a crew who have become sick?

Answer: Air Caledonia

The arrival of the two pilots from Air Caledonia on Gerti causes something of a stir amongst the whole crew. It turns out that Douglas knows the Air Caledonia captain, Hercules Shipwright, from their early years as pilots and he is hoping that this might help him get a job with a bigger airline again. Martin also sees the arrival of Hercules as a chance to improve his career prospects, unfortunately, since the flight is only supposed to last thirty minutes he is doubtful that this will give him much chance to make an impression, nor is it likely to give him the opportunity to get a date with Air Caledonia's first officer, Linda Fairburn, to whom he has taken an instant liking. Elsewhere, between bouts of bickering over board games, romance seems to be in the air between Carolyn and Hercules, the ghost of some of Arthur's charred toast makes an appearance, Martin gets into an argument with an airfield employee and someone receives a surprising job offer.

This episode is particularly notable for two reasons.

It sees the first appearance of Hercules Shipwright who will become a regular cast member as Carolyn's boyfriend and it is the only episode in which Martin is not played by Benedict Cumberbatch who had lost his voice at the time of the recording. The role of Martin was ably taken by radio comedy stalwart Tom Goodman-Hill. This episode was originally broadcast as the third episode of series three, probably due to the absence of Cumberbatch, although the show's creator, John Finnemore, has always insisted that the episodes were always intended to be broadcast in alphabetical order and that he does not view the initial disarranged broadcast order of series three as being canonical. CD releases of this series have re-established the alphabetical episode order.
5. In 'Ottery St. Mary', the second episode of series three Carolyn and Hercules go on their first date involving lunch at a pub and taking Carolyn's 'ridiculous' dog for a walk. During their country walk Carolyn gleefully discovers that Hercules has a phobia of which animals?

Answer: Sheep

Carolyn and Hercules spend their entire date arguing, but they clearly enjoy sparring with each other since at the end of the episode a second date is discussed. Meanwhile Douglas and Arthur agree to help Martin, who works part-time as a 'man with a van', deliver a piano to the titular destination. Also in this episode we learn the rules of the thrilling game 'yellow car'.
6. In the third episode of series three, 'Paris', the crew are in high spirits as it is 'Birling day' once again and they are flying their valued, if deeply unpleasant, regular customer to watch the rugby finals in the titular city. The crew are dismayed to discover that Mr Birling's wife has stopped him from giving them the large tips which he habitually hands out but instead he offers Martin and Douglas what expensive item if they can find his missing bottle of Talisker whisky?

Answer: Pearl cufflinks

There are many traditions associated with 'Birling day', most of which involve the crew shamelessly toadying to the unpleasant but disgustingly rich old man in exchange for enormous tips. However, Douglas' favourite tradition is coming up with ingenious new ways to steal the bottle of expensive Talisker whisky which Carolyn provides for their valued customer. Carolyn has tried many methods to stop Douglas but he usually proves too sneaky for her. On this particular 'Birling day', Carolyn has offered Martin £100 if he can prevent Douglas from stealing the whisky, but despite Martin's best efforts the Talisker vanishes and, with Douglas protesting his innocence, Martin has a traditional locked room mystery to solve with the assistance of his faithful sidekick Arthur. Will the culprit be the last person they suspected or will it just turn out to be Douglas up to his old tricks? Mr Birling is able to bring the mystery to an abrupt end when he offers the bribe of his pearl cufflinks in return for the bottle of fine whisky.
7. In the fourth episode of series three, 'Qikiqtarjuaq', MJN have been chartered to fly a group of passengers from Unbeaten Track Travel, to the titular destination, a small settlement in the Arctic circle, to view which animals in the wild?

Answer: Polar bears

Unbeaten Track are a Canadian firm who specialise in offering exciting adventure holidays to their clients, allowing them to view nature at first hand. Despite Martin's concerns that Gerti is the wrong type of plane for such a purpose, as it entails flying lower and more slowly than Gerti is meant to go, Douglas is quite excited about the challenge it presents. Martin becomes unbearably smug when Nancy, the holiday rep from Unbeaten Track, describes him as being a professional while saying that Douglas lacks professionalism.

This leads to Douglas getting involved in even more mischief than usual. Elsewhere Arthur becomes a bear expert, Martin has to deliver a cabin address in a French accent, Douglas succeeds in nearly terrifying the passengers to death and a spirited game of 'the travelling lemon' is played.
8. In 'Rotterdam', the penultimate episode of the third series, the glamour of the silver screen descends on the crew of MJN Air as they prepare to record their new welcome and safety videos. Unfortunately, Carolyn, realising that her crew are unfit for this particular task, is forced to hire in an actor who is also called Martin but what is his surname?

Answer: Davenport

When the two Martins meet Captain Martin Krieff, or 'little Martin' as Carolyn insists on calling him, is horrified. 'Big Martin' not only looks and sounds more like a pilot than him but he even has a better name. However, as the range of 'big Martin's' acting talents becomes evident the Martins find they have much more in common than appeared at first sight. Carolyn had attempted to film the videos using her own crew but Martin and Arthur proved hopeless in front of the camera and Douglas, though he secretly really wanted to be involved, was trying to force Carolyn to fly him to the Belgian Grand Prix in exchange for his participation. Carolyn, unwilling to bow to Douglas' demands, found an actor online who was willing to take on the role for free, unfortunately, when she sees Martin Davenport in action, she realises that sometimes you really do get what you pay for! Elsewhere Douglas is jealous of Hercules, Arthur has an impressive hat and we are introduced to Douglas' identical twin.
9. In the dramatic final episode of the third series, 'St Petersburg', it looks like the end might have come for MJN Air as the crew are forced to make an emergency landing at the titular destination when what type of bird flies into one of the engines causing a fire?

Answer: Goose

Martin heroically manages to land the stricken plane on one engine and the crew are all in one piece, albeit very shaken. Unfortunately, it looks like Gerti's flying days are behind her since the damaged engine is a write-off and a replacement would cost £250,000. To add to Carolyn's worries the plane is being kept in a heated hanger where it is continuing to rack up a large bill so Carolyn needs to act quickly.

In desperation she calls her awful ex-husband, Gordon, who has been desperate to buy the plane back from her since they got divorced and he agrees to fly straight over to take a look at the plane. Meanwhile, Arthur seems unworried about the fate of Gerti and the airline since he is sure that Douglas is going to do something clever and sort it all out, though this problem may be beyond even Douglas' cunning. Elsewhere Arthur is incredulous about the lack of Toblerones at St. Petersburg airport and Gordon gives a very generous gift to his son.
10. In 'Timbuktu', the first episode of series four, the crew are looking forward to a quiet 'Birling day' as the rugby final is being held in Twickenham which is close to Mr Birling's home. However, when a drunken Mr Birling turns up demanding they fly him to Timbuktu and offering large financial incentives to do so the crew don't ask too many questions. Unfortunately they encounter a hitch when Martin discovers that Mali is closed to international air travel for what reason?

Answer: There is a civil war in Mali

Although Mr Birling's reasons for wanting to be flown to Timbuktu to watch the rugby are somewhat incoherent due to his inebriated state, his main motivation seems to be to spite his wife who wanted him to go to a party with her instead of watching the rugby.

When Carolyn has ascertained that Douglas won't be able to broker a peace agreement in the civil war in time for kick-off she is about to reluctantly tell Mr Birling that they can't fly him to Timbuktu when Martin comes up with a devious plan which even Douglas is proud of. Martin's plan is to fly the drunken Mr Birling to somewhere that looks a bit like Timbuktu, let him watch the rugby there and fly him home before he realises anything is amiss. Douglas happens to have a friend who runs an airfield on the island of Sardinia which is on the edge of one of the biggest deserts in Europe who he is pretty sure won't mind pretending to be from Timbuktu for the day.

Unfortunately, on a topsy-turvy day of misrule it looks like Arthur is going to ruin the carefully laid plans by his erudition and book-learning.
