Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How much did it cost Walt Disney to purchase 48 square miles of Florida swamp land in 1964?

Answer: 5 million dollars

Anxious to avoid the problem he faced with developers buying up the land around Disneyland, Disney quietly purchased 48 square miles of swamp land in central Florida. He used a series of shell companies to prevent anyone from making the connection that he was intending to build another theme park.
2. Which roller coaster was the first ride in Walt Disney World to flip visitors upside down?

Answer: Rock'n Roller Coaster

Located in Disney's Hollywood Studios, Rock'n Roller Coaster seats guests in a "super stretch" limousine as they rush through traffic to get to an Aerosmith concert on time. Aerosmith stars in the pre-show, and the ride is synchronized to their music. The roller coaster features two inverted loops and one corkscrew.
3. Which ride in the Magic Kingdom is set in a Spanish fort called "Castilla del Morro"?

Answer: Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates of the Caribbean is located in Adventureland, and allows guests to experience the life of a pirate. The Disneyland version of the ride is the last ride to be supervised by Walt Disney himself.
4. Which Epcot World Showcase pavilion was not ready for opening day?

Answer: Norway

Norway and Morocco were both added to World Showcase after the park's opening in October of 1982. Each pavilion depicts the architecture, culture, and food of each respective country. In most cases, the employees working in each pavilion are from that particular country originally.
5. John Lennon officially signed the paperwork ending The Beatles at which island themed Walt Disney World resort?

Answer: Polynesian

The Polynesian hotel opened with Walt Disney World on October 1, 1971, and is located on the monorail loop to the Magic Kingdom. The rooms are housed in buildings called longhouses. The resort has been awarded the AAA four diamond award.
6. Which water park was formed after a freak snow storm hit central Florida?

Answer: Blizzard Beach

According to legend, a freak snow storm hit central Florida. Looking to capitalilze on the situation, locals built Florida's first ski resort. Of course, the snow soon melted. Rather than shut down the ski resort, it was turned into a water park.
7. The Tower of Terror ride at Hollywood Studios stands exactly 199 feet tall. Why was it built to this specific height?

Answer: To avoid needing an airplane beacon

FAA rules require that any building that rises 200 feet or above must have a red airplane beacon at the top of the building. Disney Imagineers felt that the beacon would take away from the ride's 1930s theming, so they built the ride to stand exactly 199 feet tall.
8. Magic Kingdom's Main Street USA is inspired by what Midwest city, which also happens to be the childhood home of Walt Disney?

Answer: Marceline, Missouri

Walt Disney and his family moved to Marceline, Missouri, in 1906. The theme of Main Street USA is an early turn of the 20th century Midwestern town. The street contains a train station, City Hall, a barber shop, and a theater.
9. The Walt Disney World theme parks, as a whole, have never closed.

Answer: False

The entire Walt Disney World resort shut down in 1999 when Hurricane Floyd passed through the area, and again on September 11, 2001. On September 11th, it took less than one hour to close and evacuate all four theme parks.
10. Which Magic Kingdom ride whisks riders away on a flying pirate ship?

Answer: Peter Pan's Flight

Peter Pan's Flight allows riders to fly over London and Neverland, experiencing the ride from Peter Pan's point of view as he flies. This ride is located in Fantasyland and usually has long lines.
