Born in 1949, Ric Flair grew up the only child of a physician and attended college on a football scholarship. Flair was also a longtime wrestling fan and after dropping out of college had a chance meeting with Olympian Ken Patera. Patera who was training in the famed camp of Verne Gagne, eventually was able to get him to take Flair into the program. Believe it or not "Slick Ric" entered that camp weighing in at over 300 pounds! He gutted it out and eventually made his debut in which he fought longtime AWA jobber the late George Gadaski to a draw.

On October 4, 1975, Flair, along with five other men, boarded a private plane which crashed just moments after take off. The accident claimed the life of the pilot and paralyzed Johnny Valentine, father of Greg Valentine, from the waist down. Flair suffered a broken neck and was told that his budding career was over. Never one to back down from a challenge, Flair returned in just six months time proving his determination to be a success in the industry.

On July 29, 1977, Flair defeated the legendary Bobo Brazil, one of the premiere stars from the 1950s through the 1970s, for the NWA United States Title. Just three months later Ric lost the title to another young star by the name of Ricky Steamboat. For over a dozen years the rivalry of Flair and Steamboat topped cards across the country and sold out many arenas.

The two had a natural chemistry and a great love for the industry which made for absolutely fantastic matches. The feud climaxed in 1989 when the two battled for the WCW Heavyweight Title in a thrilling series of matches.

On September 17, 1981, Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes to win his very first NWA Heavyweight Title. This event literally skyrocketed Flair's career to superstar status and also sowed the seeds for the legendary Flair/Rhodes feud of the 1980s. Flair and Dusty also had great chemistry but another treat was the fact that both men came from opposite upbringings. Flair was the "Custom Made Man" wearing expensive clothes, eating in upscale restaurants and dating different women. Rhodes was never shy to say he was "The Son of a Plumber", wore cowboy boots and sympathized with "The Common Man".

The series of promos cut by each on the other in 1985-1986 was some of the best television I have ever seen.

On May 6, 1984 at the very first WCCW "Parade of Champions" the late Kerry Von Erich defeated Ric Flair to win the NWA Heavyweight Title, an honor that was meant for his older brother David. Flair regained his prized "ten pounds of gold" just three weeks later in Japan.

In July 1986 at "The Great American Bash" Dusty Rhodes defeated his longtime nemesis in a "Steel Cage Match". Unfortunately tenacity is Flair's middle name and he regained the title just several weeks later. In September 1987 Ron Garvin defeated Flair to win the NWA Heavyweight Title only to have Ric regain it at "Starrcade '87".

In the fall of 1990, the reigning WCW Tag Team Champions, Butch Reed and Ron Simmons, aka Doom began a short feud with the legendary "Four Horsemen". The angle began when Flair and his cohorts refused to share a dressing room with Reed and Simmons. The storyline was that Reed and Simmons took this not only as a professional insult but also a racial one.

At "Halloween Havoc '90" Simmons and Reed battled Arn Anderson and Ric Flair to a double disqualification. This was a brief period during which Flair wasn't WCW Heavyweight Champion, he had lost the belt in July 1990 to Sting.

After The Crockett Family sold the NWA to Ted Turner in late 1988, it was renamed WCW and the infamous Jim Herd was hired to run the company. Right from the onset Herd had no idea how to handle the wrestling end of the business which resulted in many top talents, including Flair, leaving for the rival WWF. On October 1, 1992 in Canada, Flair, now in his second reign as WWF Heavyweight Champion, lost the belt to Bret Hart.

This was the catalyst that jumped started Hart's major singles run as a premiere star in the WWF during the mid 1990s.

At "Unforgiven" on September 18, 2005 Ric Flair defeated the outspoken and arrogant star Carlito to win the WWF Intercontinental Title for the very first time in his storied career. Flair held the title for five months before he lost it in a February 2006 segment of "Raw" to Shelton Benjamin. Benjamin had some considerable assistance from his Mama who never went anywhere without her tank of oxygen.

The war of words between Ric Flair and Mick Foley goes way back to the early 1990s when Foley had his first stint as Cactus Jack in WCW. Flair often regarded the out of shape Foley as nothing more than a "glorified stuntman" who couldn't wrestle to save his life. On the other hand Foley has constantly berated Flair as being an ego maniac who refused to share the limelight and did not know when to hang it up and let a new generation have a turn. On August 20, 2006 at "Summerslam'06" the two clashed in Foley's style of match: "An I Quit Match".

This one has to be seen to be believed as both men literally beat the other to a bloody pulp with Flair winning.

In 2008, Flair lost a "Career Match" against the iconic Shawn Michaels at "Wrestlemania XXIV". That very same year Ric was inducted into The WWE "Hall of Fame" and had an emotional send off on a segment of "Raw". In January 2010 Flair began a two year stint in the rival TNA where he renewed his rivalries with Mick Foley and Hulk Hogan.

In early 2012, Flair left the promotion and in March 2013 showed up on WWE television on a night that "Raw" went "Old School". That evening Flair helped The Miz win his match against the cocky Dolph Ziggler, proving he is not done just yet.
