Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the majority of what was to become World Championship Wrestling called before Ted Turner bought it?

Answer: Jim Crockett Promotions

Ted Turner bought Jim Crockett Promotions, after Jim Crockett started having money problems, and turned it into World Championship Wrestling. Eastern Championship Wrestling would become Extreme Championship Wrestling and Capitol Wrestling Corporation would be the World Wide Wrestling Federation, which would become World Wrestling Federation and finally World Wrestling Entertainment.
2. What was World Championship Wrestling's equivilant to "WrestleMania"?

Answer: Starrcade

StarrCade was first broadcast on November 24, 1983 in Greensboro, NC and was under the Jim Crockett Promotions banner. StarrCade would later go on to become the biggest Pay Per View for the National Wrestling Alliance and then World Championship Wrestling.
3. What former World Wrestling Federation wrestler debuted on the first episode of WCW Monday Nitro, he was working on a handshake deal with Vince McMahon at the time.

Answer: Lex Luger

Lex Luger was working without a contract for the World Wrestling Federation at the time. Sting and Lex Luger were really good friends and Sting asked Eric Bischoff to bring Luger into the WCW. Eric Bischoff offered Lex Luger a huge pay reduction from what he had been making, but Luger still signed to a contract with WCW and appeared on the very first Monday Nitro. Hulk Hogan had crossed over to World Championship Wrestling and Kevin Nash and Scott Hall would cross over in the following months.
4. What storyline is credited as being the main reason for World Championship Wrestling becoming more popular than the World Wrestling Federation from 1996 to 1998?

Answer: nWo vs. WCW

The huge nWo storyline is credited as being the main reason for WCW's dominance of professional wrestling between 1996 and 1998. Sting vs. Ric Flair would end up being the trademark feud for not only WCW but also for the National Wrestling Alliance, it would even be the last match of the very last WCW Monday Nitro, but it was not the reason for WCW's huge increase in popularity.

The WCW Invasion of the WWE was a storyline that the WWE employed in 2001, after they bought WCW, but the WWE hugely misused this huge opportunity and it ended up being a huge flop. Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Mr. McMahon was the feud that would turn the Monday Night War back to the World Wrestling Federation's favor after World Championship Wrestling's Wo storyline got stale.
5. Vince McMahon and his World Wrestling Federation would sue World Championship Wrestling due to WCW leading the fans to believe that Scott Hall and Kevin Nash were WWF superstars invading WCW.

Answer: True

Scott Hall (Razor Ramon in the WWF) and Kevin Nash (Diesel in the WWF) both told Vince McMahon that they were going to resign their contracts with the WWF, but instead signed with WCW and began the huge nWo storyline.
6. The huge super main event match, Goldberg vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, was the main event of 1998's StarrCade.

Answer: False

WCW actually gave this match away for free on the July 6, 1998 edition of WCW Monday Nitro.
7. David Arquette became the World Championship Wrestling World Heavyweight Champion in 2000. What other non-wrestler would become WCW World Heavyweight Champion in that year?

Answer: Vince Russo

Dennis Rodman and Jay Leno were both featured heavily in WCW storylines, but neither of them won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Drew Carey made some notable appearances in the WWF around this time. Vince Russo was the head writer for WCW at the time that he won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.
8. What was the name of the group, led by Eric Bischoff, that attempted to purchase WCW?

Answer: Fusient Media Ventures

The World Wrestling Federation would end up buying WCW, but Eric Bischoff attempted to purchase it under Fusient Media Ventures.
9. When did Eric Bischoff back out on his attempt to purchase WCW?

Answer: When Jamie Kellner cancelled all WCW programming on Turner Networks.

Kellner is reviled by wrestling fans for this action, due to the belief that had WCW been handled correctly by Fusient, it might have sparked a fourth golden age of professional wrestling, and many blame Kellner for the eventual decline the genre has seen due to the WWF purchasing WCW and at this point having a near monopoly in professional wrestling in the United States.
10. Sting was a huge draw for WCW and is one of the very few wrestlers who have never worked for, and has said that he never will work for, World Wrestling Entertainment. What was the next major wrestling promotion that Sting worked for after WCW?

Answer: Total Nonstop Action Wrestling

Sting debuted on Total Nonstop Action in January of 2006.
