Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bad Break Billy has been having a terrible string of unfortunate events lately. Upon entering the casino, Billy sees a double zero Roulette table with a crowd of merry gamblers having a great time. With all that excitement in the air, Billy decides to wander over. Billy takes a $5 chip and places it on number 25, after all, that is how old he is. The croupier spins the wheel, drops the ball and everyone leans in anticipating their fortunes. After jumping around the wheel, the croupier announces that number 25 is the winner. How much money has Billy profited on his $5 bet?

Answer: The croupier responds by sliding Billy $175 in chips, leaving his original $5 bet on the table.

Roulette is a game of chance played on a spinning wheel which is divided into numbered segments from zero to 36. In most US casinos, there are two zeroes on the wheel (0 and 00), while in most European casinos, there is only one zero. The addition of the extra zero increases the house odds against having to pay the bettor. Roulette is one of the earliest casino gambling games with its origin tracing back to France in the 18th century.

Although an easy game to learn, the chances of Billy continuing his winning ways are very slim. Roulette has, on average, the expectation to lose $0.53 out of every $1 bet if the player bets on a single number.
2. Billy has noticed a group of players in a side room of the casino playing a card game called Baccarat. After strolling over, Billy watches as the player's place bets on table spots designated as "Banker", "Player" or "Tie". Billy sees this game is quite simple, so he pulls out another $5 chip and places it on "Banker". The cards are dealt with the dealer giving Billy the king of hearts and the three of spades. The banker's cards are shown to be the two of clubs and the seven of clubs. Did Billy win his bet?

Answer: Yes, by betting on the banker, Billy wins because the total of the dealers cards is a nine while the total of his own cards is a three. In Baccarat, only the last number is used for the total.

Baccarat is a simple game which accounts for much of the profits or losses in a casino. Many whales (a term used to describe a person who bets large amounts of money in the casino) play Baccarat due to it's low house edge. Many people consider Baccarat to be a sophisticated game, after all, James Bond played the game in the movies "Casino Royale", "Dr. No" and "Thunderball". In Baccarat, the object of the game is simple. Guess who will have the higher hand (the banker or the player), or guess if the hands will result in a tie.

The best hand is the higher hand after adding the sum of the two cards. Only the last digit of the total is used. Face cards are given the value of zero while aces are valued at one. With that said, a hand holding an ace and an eight would be a total of nine. That would beat a hand holding a pair of kings, which would be a zero. Obviously, this is only the basic premise of the game, there are other rules for standing pat and taking additional cards. There are also several variations of the game played in different casinos including Chemin de Fer and Banque varieties.
3. Billy is having a nice time in the casino. He enjoys the friendly banter between the players and he especially likes the sound of the dealer shouting "21" when a player gets the ultimate hand in the game of Blackjack. Looking over the Blackjack tables, Billy notices that each table uses a different number of decks in which to deal to the participants. Which table should Billy sit down at to maximize his chances of winning.

Answer: The one-shoe deck. Statistics state that the lower the number of cards, the more likely that the player will achieve a total of 21 in his hand.

Fundamentally, the house edge decreases dramatically by using a smaller number of cards in the game of Blackjack. In a one-deck shoe, the house advantage is less than .05%, while using an eight-deck shoe increases the house edge to approximately .7%. Unfortunately, Bad Break Billy sits at the six-deck shoe table and promptly busts three hands in a row.
4. Billy continues his pursuit of separating the casino from as much of their money as possible. He wanders around and decides to stop at the Three Card Poker table. Billy plucks down his $5 bet and hopes to be dealt a quality hand such as three of a kind or a straight flush. Which of these hands would Billy have the better chance of receiving?

Answer: Three of a kind will occur more likely.

There are 52 possible ways that a three of a kind can occur in Three Card Poker while there are only 48 ways to make a straight flush. Roughly, a person might expect to receive a three of a kind 2.4 times out of 1,000 hands played. A straight flush is slightly less common, occurring at a rate of 2.2 times out of 1,000 hands. Either of these hands will certainly be cause for celebration at the table.
5. Bad Break Billy decides he'd like a drink from the bar. While the bartender is making his cocktail, he slides a $20 bill into a video poker machine. He pushes the button to play the maximum allowable credits and the machine deals his hand. The machine displays an ace, king, queen and jack of hearts along with a three of spades. What are the odds that Billy will draw to his royal flush?

Answer: 1 out of 47

Quite simply, there are 52 cards in the deck, five of these are displayed on the machine, leaving 47 cards in the deck. One of these cards is the ten of hearts that Billy needs to complete his royal flush, thus he has the one card out of 47 that gives him the jackpot. Unfortunately for Billy, he swaps the three of spades for an eight of diamonds, ruining his chance for walking away with a $1,000 payout. The odds of making a royal flush on the initial hand dealt is one out of 649,740. If you hold one face card and receive four new cards, the chance of the royal flush is 178,365. Having two face cards helps your chances; you'll have one chance in 16,215 to complete your hand. Holding three suited face cards will help you further, improving your odds to one out of 1,081.

As you can see, getting the royal flush is not very common, but it's a great feeling when one comes your way.
6. Billy strolls into the Keno lounge and plops into a comfortable reclining chair. A Keno attendant brings Billy a play sheet and a pencil. After reading the instructions, Billy sees that the object of the game is to pick numbers (from one to 80) on the play sheet in anticipation of numbers that will be drawn randomly and displayed on the overhead video monitor. Billy wants to make the best bet possible, so how many numbers should he pick on his play sheet?

Answer: 4

Your best bet in Keno is to play four spots. This gives you the best odds to win a prize, approximately once every 3.86 times you play. The worst odds are if you play only two spots. You will hit those two numbers only once out of every 16.63 times you play. Billy decides go with his best odds and he picks four numbers.

Many people choose birthdays and anniversaries to add a little bit of superstition to the game. Billy uses his birthday and his girlfriend's. Her numbers come up, his do not. Based on most Keno payout schedules, that means he wins his money back.
7. Billy is getting bored, so he decides to wander into the table games area. He sees a game resembling Blackjack, but this table says the game is called Spanish 21. What is the main difference between Spanish 21 and traditional Blackjack?

Answer: In Spanish 21, all of the tens are removed from the shoe.

Spanish 21 is played the same as Blackjack, with the exception that there are no tens in the deck. This gives the dealer a 2% advantage of winning over traditional Blackjack games. Due to this advantage, there are several proposition bets that can be won while playing Spanish 21. For instance, getting a 21 with five, six or seven cards will pay a premium over a simple two card 21. Also, if the player receives a 6-7-8 or a 7-7-7 in their hand, they will also receive a bonus.

The biggest bonus occurs when the player receives a 7-7-7 while the dealer's exposed card is also a 7. That will typically pay out a $1,000 bonus on bets of less than $25.
8. Billy makes his way to a table where people are playing a card game where they get seven cards. It seems like the players are separating their hands into a two card hand and a five card hand. Which game are they most likely playing?

Answer: Pai-Gow Poker

Pai-Gow poker is a game where seven cards are dealt to each player who must make two separate hands, one with two cards, and the other with five. The object is to make the two best poker hands possible, provided the five card hand beats the two card hand.

The players hands are compared with the dealer's and the winner is based on who wins both hands. If either the player or the dealer wins either the two or the five card hand, and not both of them, then there is a draw declared and the bet is pushed.
9. A thunderous cheer breaks out behind Billy, so he quickly turns around to find a crowd surrounding the craps table. Since Billy has never played the game, he decides to watch for a while. He notices one player who keeps tossing the craps dealer a $5 chip and calling for a horn bet. What numbers on the dice are considered winners on a horn bet?

Answer: 2, 3, 11 and 12

A horn bet is called before the dice are rolled. The bettor is predicting that either a 2, 3, 11 or 12 will be rolled. In fact, a horn bet is four separate bets, one bet for each number. If the shooter rolls an 11 for example he'll win 15 times his bet for the 11, but he'll lose the amount bet on the 2, 3 and 12. If a 2 or 12 are rolled, the bettor gets 30 times his bet, while a 3 or 11 will only win him 15 times.

The house has a pretty big edge on a horn bet, but players like to bet it because there are four ways to win.
10. Billy has been in the casino all day and realizes he has actually made a small profit. He decides to risk all his winnings on one final game. He goes to the high limit room and drops a $100 token into a progressive slot machine and crosses his fingers. What is a progressive slot machine, and what makes it different from a traditional slot machine?

Answer: A progressive slot machine is a series of slot machines where a percentage of the money taken in is put into one large prize pool. Hitting the jackpot spin will result in the winner receiving the entire collection of prize money.

Hitting the jackpot on a progressive slot machine is the life changing event that all gamblers dream of. Some jackpots are in the range of millions of dollars. Most casinos offer a section of machines that are networked together and a percentage of the income is set into one prize pool that can be won by one lucky bettor. Bad Break Billy drops in his $100 chip, the entire profit made from his day in the casino.

He pushes the spin button and watches the wheels roll round and round. The first wheel stops on the red seven, the second wheel stops on the white seven...the third wheel? Well of course, it stops on a blank. So much for Billy turning his luck around today.
