Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Roddy Piper became one of the biggest stars in the history of the WWF... but his Madison Square Garden debut in 1979 was a disaster and he was immediately fired, or at least wasn't brought back for several months. What happened?

Answer: Freddie Blassie stuffed his bagpipes with toilet paper

When Roddy went to play the pipes, not a sound came out---in front of 21,000 people!
2. What is the real relationship between 'brothers' Ronnie and Jimmy Garvin?

Answer: Ronnie is Jimmy's stepfather

Ronnie (Roger Barnes) married Jimmy's (James Williams) mother.
3. What oldtime American champion wrestler would demonstrate his neck strength by taking the drop from a regulation hanging scaffold with the noose around his neck without injury?

Answer: Farmer Burns

Burns had a 19' neck at a bodyweight of 160 pounds.
4. Sticking with necks, we've all seen the spot where a wrestler seems to be getting thrown out of the ring, but ends up with his neck caught between the two top ropes twisted together---but who invented it?

Answer: Buddy Rogers

Rogers innovated a LOT of the flying moves we still see today.
5. And sticking with spots we've all seen, who invented the getting thrown into the corner, hitting the turnbuckles upside down, flipping over the top rope, and landing on the ring apron on your feet bump?

Answer: Ray Stevens

They ALL used it, but Ray made it up!
6. Joe Stetcher met Strangler Lewis in a legitimate contest to unify the world title in Omaha on July 5, 1926. This match killed shoot wrestling on the bigtime level. Why?

Answer: They went over 5 hours without locking up

The officials finally stopped the match. The resultant publicity was so bad, virtually all matches from then on were performed to ensure the fans would be entertained.
7. What professional activity did both Ken Shamrock and Dan Severn FIRST participate in?

Answer: Professional Wrestling

Both Shammy and Severn started as pro wrestlers in the late '80s before shootfighting came around in the '90s.
8. The NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) heavyweight championship has been held by Lou Thesz, Dory Funk Jr., Jack Brisco, and Ric Flair among others. The National Wrestling Alliance in its current form, an alliance of various promotions, dates back to what year?

Answer: 1948

Five promotors came together to form the NWA in 1948. Period. Tracing their world title lineage back to Frank Gotch or Hackenschmidt was never anything but a convenient fiction... and in any case that may have been the 'world' title, but the National Wrestling Alliance itself in its current form did not exist before 1948 (although an unrelated organization by the same name did, as well as the National Wrestling Association). Newly discovered information indicates that one of the founding promotors, Pinky George, DID use the National Wrestling Alliance name for the titles in his promotion starting in 1940, and this was adopted by the organization when formed in '48.
9. BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS ONE. How many times has Brett Hart held the WWF and WCW World Heavyweight Championships, combined?

Answer: 0

BRET Hart has held the WWF title 5 times and the WCW title twice for a total of 7... but BRETT Hart has NEVER held EITHER, because BRETT Hart was an early ring name used by Barry Horowitz (who, btw, is just as good a wrestler as Bret Hart, if not BETTER!) in Jim Crockett Promotions (yes, yes, he worked as JACK Hart in Florida, but he worked as BRETT Hart in JCP). And also btw... when the REAL Bret Hart came to the same territory early in HIS career, HE had to work as 'Buddy Hart' to avoid confusion!
10. More fathers and sons. Which of the following pairs ARE biological father and son?

Answer: The Assassin and referee Nick Patrick

The Assassin Jody Hamilton is Nicholas Patrick Hamilton's father (Nick wrestled himself until injuries forced him into the referee's role). Pat Tanaka is the son of Duke Keomuka (Hisao Tanaka). The Rey Misterios are uncle and nephew. Keith was a horrible wrestler given the Steinborn name in an attempt by a promoter to embarrass Dickie.
11. Which of the following wrestlers had a legitimate right to the 'doctor' in his name?

Answer: Dr. Bill Miller

Big Bill Miller was indeed a licensed veterinarian.
12. In ECW, where were all the interviews and promos with Joey Styles in front of the ECW backdrop actually taped?

Answer: At Paul Hayman's mother's house

With Paul E's mom ironing a few feet away...
13. Which of the following managers was NEVER a wrestler himself?

Answer: The Grand Wizard

The Wiz (Ernie Roth) was not an athletic guy. Both Red and Saul were top light heavyweights in their day. Gary was... well, let's just say MUCH better as a manager than he was as a wrestler!
14. Legendary shooter Mr. Wrestling I (Tim Woods) once did a gimmick where he would legitimately wrestle all comers including fans. Why did he have reason to regret this?

Answer: An opponent bit the tip of his finger off

The guy was a known psycho with an arrest record as long as your arm. The great Tim Woods has just passed on.
15. Who did Verne Gagne defeat to become the first AWA champion?

Answer: Nobody

Gagne, who owned the promotion, anointed himself as champion when NWA champion O'Connor 'did not defend the title against Gagne within the deadline'. Of course he was never really supposed to.
16. The real contests take place in the gym. Who did Kurt Angle, in a recent interview, say is the only wrestler in the current WWF that he was NOT able to pin?

Answer: Paul Wight (The Giant)

Angle said he could get Wight off his feet, but could not pin him.
17. Who was the first to use entrance music?

Answer: Gorgeous George

GG entered to 'Pomp and Circumstance', starting back in the late '40s.
18. Which of the following DID win an Olympic medal for the US?

Answer: Bad News Brown

Allen 'Bad News' Coage aka Bad News Allen aka Bad News Brown won the Bronze in Judo at Super-Heavyweight in '76. Coleman, Roop, and Lewis all competed in wrestling for the US in the Olympics, but none medaled.
19. Capitol Wrestling Corporation renamed itself the WWWF in 1963, and then shortened it to WWF in 1979. Which of the following statements is correct?

Answer: WWWF left the NWA in '63, rejoined from '71 to '83

The NWA is NOT and never HAS been a promotion. It IS and ALWAYS has been an ALLIANCE of promotions. During their rejoining, the WWWF recognized the NWA world title and stopped calling the WWWF championship a world title.
20. Where did tag team matches originate?

Answer: US

Yes, they used to call them 'Australian tag team' matches, but they were invented in the US. The earliest solid reference is to San Francisco in 1921. The Aussies never heard of them till they were imported from the US, and were of course referred to as 'American tag team' matches!
21. Under what name was Eddie 'Lalo' Rodriguez much better known?

Answer: Ciclon Negro

Ciclon is one of the most underrated workers ever!
22. True or false: The 'Ragin' Bull' Manny Fernandez played on the Miami Dolphins 'perfect season' team in professional football.

Answer: False

Different Manny Fernandez. The Bull never played in the NFL.
23. 'Leading internet wrestling journalist' Scott Keith recently reported that Ed 'Moondog' Moretti is the father of WWF girl wrestler Ivory. Which of the following statements is true?

Answer: They are not related

Well... her name is Lisa MAretti, not MOretti... HIS last name is not really Moretti... and he's a whole FOUR YEARS OLDER THAN SHE IS!
24. Which Memphis wrestling legend was highly involved in the civil rights struggle, including the integration of arenas, and was said to be Elvis Presley's favorite wrestler?

Answer: Sputnik Monroe

Sputnik says that if you went into any black person's home in Memphis in those years, you'd see three pictures on the wall, Jesus, Martin Luther King, and himself, and he just may be right!
25. We have lost many former and current wrestlers over the past couple of years. What European international star of the '60s and '70s, especially successful in the WWWF and in Australia and believed to be dead since '97, was recently discovered to still be alive and well?

Answer: Spiros Arion

Arion, from Greece, was thought to have died in '97. The confusion arose because the mistaken notion became prevalent that his real name is Andreas Lambrakis. The real Lambrakis, also a very popular Greek wrestler, DID pass away in '97. The Australian wrestling historian Libnan Ayoub discovered that Arion is living in Greece, and spoke to him.
