1. J is for: The name of "His Airness" who dazzled the NBA from 1984-2003 and won six championships in only eight years.

Answer: Michael Jordan

Jordan won the NBA Final MVP award in all six of his championship runs. Michael also played in 14 NBA all-star games, for two Olympic gold medal winning teams and he also starred in the 1996 movie "Space Jam".
2. K is for: The state that was bleeding because of a border war between 1854 and 1858 due to the issue of slavery.

Answer: Kansas

This conflict took place between the "Free-Staters" (people who were anti-slavery) and "Border Ruffians" (people who were pro-slavery). Both sides were trying to influence whether or not Kansas would join the Union and allow slavery within its borders.

After many attempts at compromising on a state constitution, the pro-slavery members decided to boycott the process and by doing so allowed the "Free-Staters" to claim victory at the polls.
3. L is for: The name of 828,000 square miles of land that was purchased by the United States from France in 1803.

Answer: Louisiana Purchase

The cost of the newly acquired land was $11,250,000 and the United States also relinquished $3,750,000 of debt owed by France. Some of the states that came into existence because of this purchase included Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa and South Dakota as well as parts of Minnesota, North Dakota, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana!

The first Europeans to settle in the land that is now known as Michigan were the French back in the early 17th century. Michigan became a part of the Royal Province of New France until the land was passed onto Great Britain after the French and Indian War in 1763. Michigan is known as "The Wolverine State" and is the only state that borders four out of the five great lakes.

The Yankees won the World Series three times in the 1920s, four times in the 1930s, four times in the 1940s and five times in the 1950s! Many other greats have been a member of the New York Yankees' organization such as Yogi Berra, Roger Maris, Billy Martin, Whitey Ford, Don Mattingly and Derek Jeter.

Answer: Oregon Trail

The Oregon Trail helped the United States to expand its population all the way from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. The typical journey lasted about five to six months and included travel through Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon.
7. P is for: The name of the United States military base that was bombed by the Japanese on December 7, 1941.

Answer: Pearl Harbor

The Imperial Japanese Navy launched over 350 aircraft from 6 aircraft carriers with the intent on being able to destroy the entire United States Pacific Fleet of ships and aircraft. The attack destroyed two battleships, one minelayer, two destroyers, 188 aircraft, and it killed 2,333 people and left 1,139 wounded.

The attack prompted the U.S. to join World War II which ended up resulting in the surrender of Japan.
8. Q is for: The name of the terrorist organization that the September 11, 2001 attacks to the World Trade Center towers were spearheaded by.

Answer: Al-Qaeda

The Al-Qaeda was founded in 1988 by Azzam to combine Islamic militant terrorist organizations. The group was later taken over by Osama Bin Laden. Besides the September 11, 2001 attacks on America, Al-Qaeda has also claimed to have been behind the 2003 Istanbul bombings, the March 11, 2004 Madrid train bombings and the July 7, 2005 London bombings.
9. R is for: The first name of the woman who is credited for starting the Montgomery Bus Boycott on December 1, 1955.

Answer: Rosa

Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. When she refused bus driver James Blake's demand to give up her seat so that a white passenger could sit down she was arrested. What followed was one of the biggest demonstrations for equality in the history of the United States with the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

This was also one of the events that propelled Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. to the forefront of the civil rights movement.
10. S is for: The name of the Shoshone woman who travelled with Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition of the Western United States from 1804-1806.

Answer: Sacajawea

The expedition started from Camp Wood near present day St. Louis, Missouri and finished in Fort Clatsop which is near present day Astoria, Oregon. Sacajawea helped with navigating some of the area that was travelled and she also worked as a translator between the explorers and other American Indian tribes.
