Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is NOT a part of an atom?

Answer: ion

The structure of any atom is similar to a solar system. In the nucleus, there are neutrons and protons which make up most of the mass of the atom. Around them are electrons in different shells/orbits. The electrons have negligible mass. An ion is a charged atom.
2. When you add a metallic oxide and water, what type of product do you get?

Answer: base

When you add a non-metallic oxide and water, you get an acid. Neutralization of acids and bases result in the formation of neutral salts. Any substance which is used to tell if any other substance is acidic or basic is known as an indicator.
3. Which mineral acid is also found in our stomach to help the digestion process?

Answer: Hydrochloric acid

The stomach produces a thick layer of mucus so that the acid does not corrode the walls of the stomach! Hydrochloric acid, formula HCl, doesn't have oxygen atoms like the other answer choices.
4. What is one way to test if a substance is acidic, basic or neutral?

Answer: Using an indicator

The best example is litmus paper. Red litmus turns blue on application of a base while blue litmus turns red on application of an acid. Tasting or touching it can be very dangerous, as acids and bases can be corrosive. Water can only dilute the acid/base, not test it.
5. Carboxylic acids and alcohols react together to form ______.

Answer: esters

Salts are formed in the reaction of acids and bases. Ethanol is actually a type of alcohol. Ethane is a hydrocarbon gas.
6. Out of the following, which is the most reactive metal?

Answer: Potassium

Fluorine is the most reactive element but a non-metal. Calcium and sodium are reactive metals but not more reactive than potassium.
7. After doing an experiment, you bring a burning matchstick near the reaction and notice that the gas being released burns with a popping sound. Which gas might it be?

Answer: Hydrogen

Hydrogen is the lightest gas and the most abundant element in the universe with an atomic number of 1. Helium is an inert gas.
8. Which of the following is a compound?

Answer: Ammonia

Ammonia is a basic substance with chemical formula NH3, i.e. one atom of nitrogen bonded to three atoms of hydrogen. Manganese is a metallic element while nitrogen and oxygen are non-metallic gaseous elements.
9. What is the chemical symbol of mercury?

Answer: Hg

Mercury takes its chemical symbol from its Roman name hydragyrum. Also known as quicksilver, it is a liquid metal. It finds application in thermometers and barometers. Beware, it is poisonous.
10. In what might you find sodium stored in the laboratory?

Answer: in kerosene

Sodium is too reactive to be kept in open air as it reacts with oxygen to form sodium oxide. If it comes into contact with water, it reacts to form sodium hydroxide. So you will most likely find it in kerosene or some sort of oil to keep it away from air and moisture.
