Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of Anne and Gilbert's first baby, who only lived a day?

Answer: Joyce

Sadly, Joyce passed away very shortly after her birth - it is not explained what was the cause.

Interestingly, Joyce is the only child of Anne and Gilbert not to be named for a family member or friend.
2. Anne and Gilbert's first son, Jem, is a nickname derived from what name?

Answer: James

James Matthew Blythe is named for 'the two finest gentleman I ever knew', Captain Jim, who Anne and Gilbert befriend while making their first marital home together, and Matthew who adopted Anne.

Jem is the only surviving child of Anne and Gilbert to have been born in the 'House of Dreams'. Later on, this is used as an insult against him by his siblings.
3. What is Walter's middle name?

Answer: Cuthbert

Walter Cuthbert Blythe was named for Anne's father and for the surname of the brother and sister who adopted her - Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert.

Walter is described as 'a hop out of kin' due to his black hair and dark eyes, which did not appear in any of his immediate family.
4. Anne and Diana are the twins. What nicknames are they known by?

Answer: Nan and Di

Nan is named for her mother and Di for her mother's best friend.

Conversely, Diana looks like her mother (and is considered her father's favourite due to this) while Nan has brown hair and eyes.
5. Shirley is the youngest boy. Who looked after him when Anne became seriously ill following his birth?

Answer: Susan

He calls Susan 'Mother Susan' and is her favourite of all the children. When he signs up to the Air Force in 'Rilla of Ingleside', Susan claims that it hurts her the most to see him go as she considers him as her own son.

Shirley is called after his mother's maiden name.
6. Rilla is a nickname for Marilla. What relation is Marilla to the Blythe family?

Answer: Anne's guardian

Bertha Marilla Blythe was the only child of Anne and Gilbert who appeared as a main character in their own right in 'Rilla of Ingleside', where she lives through the experience of World War 1.
7. The Reverend John, who is introduced in 'Rainbow Valley', is the father of Faith and Jerry, who later marry Jem and Nan respectively. What is their surname?

Answer: Meredith

The budding relationships between the couples is first alluded to in 'Rilla of Ingleside' but it is in 'The Blythes Are Quoted' that we learn of the marriages.

Jem and Faith are parents to Jem and Walter (named for their father and uncle).

Nan and Jerry are parents to Diana (named for her aunt and mother's twin.)
8. What is the name of the baby Rilla takes care of during World War 1?

Answer: Jims

Rilla happened upon the baby while out visiting. His mother had died and he was being poorly cared for by a neighbour. She took him home in a soup tureen and looked after him until his father returned from the war.

Rilla married Kenneth Ford and together they had two children of their own, Gilbert and Rilla.
9. Which battle of World War 1 did Walter die in?

Answer: Flers-Courcelette

Walter initially does not sign up for the war as he is afraid to go. After using an illness he was recovering from as an excuse, he signs up. He later writes to Rilla on the evening before his death and tells her he is no longer afraid.

Though he never knew it, Una Meredith loved Walter, and upon his death Rilla gives her his final letter to remember him by.
10. The births of how many of the Blyth children are events that occur in the books?

Answer: Three

Joyce and Jem were both born in 'The House of Dreams', in the titular building, while Rilla was born at Ingleside in 'Rainbow Valley'.

All the other children were born during the gap between these two books.
