Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Math: You have to be at work by 9:00 am. It takes you 20 minutes to shower and dress, 15 minutes to eat your breakfast and prepare your lunch and 40 minutes to walk to work. What time is the latest that you should you rise from your bed in the morning to get to work on time?

Answer: 7:45 am

Add together 20+15+40=75 minutes. You should rise no later than 75 minutes before your expected arrival at work.
Nine o'clock - 75 minutes = 7 hours and forty five minutes = 7:45am
2. Science: Into which part of the water cycle do rain, snow, freezing rain, hail and sleet fit?

Answer: Precipitation

Rain, snow, freezing rain, hail and sleet are all forms of precipitation. Precipitation happens when particles that are within a cloud become so heavy, too heavy in fact, that they just can't stay suspended in the air anymore. Since they can't stay suspended in the air they fall down to the ground.
3. Geography: On a map or a globe, which line lies at the zero degree line of latitude?

Answer: Equator

The equator is the line of latitude which is located at zero degrees around the center of the earth, going around, not up and down. The latitude lines north of the equator include the Tropic of Cancer at 23 degrees north latitude. The latitude lines south of the equator include the Tropic of Capricorn at 23 degrees south latitude.
4. History: In the USA, why was the Emancipation Proclamation made?

Answer: To free slaves

Abraham Lincoln believed that the slaves should be freed. When he became president he gradually gained support for this. On the first of January 1863, Lincoln presented the Emancipation Proclamation which stated, "All persons held as slaves within any States, or designated part of the State, the people whereof shall be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free." The slaves from U.S. states that were not under Union control were declared free at that time.
5. Health: Which organ within our body produces bile?

Answer: Liver

The liver is the organ that is responsible for producing bile. Bile is important for breaking down the fats in the foods that we eat, so that they become smaller and more easily digested particles.

Answer: Swiftly

An adverb is the part of speech which modifies such words as verbs, other adverbs and also adjectives. Swiftly, the adverb, describes the verb ran. Modifying with the adverb "swiftly" lets the reader know that the lioness, which was running, was fast instead of slow.
8. English Language Arts (Literature): Which of the following is fiction?

Answer: The book called "The Secret Garden"

Fiction is a type of literary writing that is imaginative. "The Secret Garden" (1911) was written by Frances Burnett. One child has no mother and the other is an orphan but together, with the help of a boy and some natural magic, they succeed in creating a wondrous garden.
9. Sports: In baseball, which term is used when a player legally crosses home plate?

Answer: Run

When a baseball player has rounded bases one, two and three and then approaches and legally crosses home plate he scores a run for the team. Each run counts as a point for the team. The team with the most runs at the end of the game is the winning team.
10. English Language Arts (Vocabulary): What is the definition of imminent?

Answer: May happen in the near future

Imminent means that something may happen soon or may happen in the near future. When something is impending, it is imminent. "The wind and rain will be extremely severe because the hurricane danger is imminent." This means that a hurricane is approaching and the wind and rain will happen soon.
