Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Australia's capital city?

Answer: Canberra

Although Sydney is the biggest and most populated city in Australia, Canberra is the capital. It was created because of a continuing argument between Sydney and Melbourne, who both wanted the capital city to be theirs.
2. What Australian city was the first to host the Olympic Games?

Answer: Melbourne

Melbourne hosted the Olympics in 1956, Sydney hosted them in 2000. Brisbane and Adelaide haven't yet.
3. What year was the Federation of the Commonwealth of Australia?

Answer: 1901

In 1901, Australia became a country. Before 1901 Australia was made up of individual colonies. However, Australia is still part of the British Commonwealth, and because of that we get to compete in the Commonwealth Games!
4. What animal, native to Australia, lives in eucalyptus trees and eats the leaves?

Answer: Koala

The koala, platypus and kangaroo are all native to Australia and are big attractions in zoos around the world! The koala spends its time either sleeping or eating, and gets its water from the leaves that it eats.
5. Where in Australia would you find the Big Banana?

Answer: Coffs Harbour

The Big Banana is just that. A big banana! With places around it that sell lots of banana-related objects. Near-by, there are plenty of bananas in the many banana plantations in the north of Australia.
6. In what year did the First Fleet land in Botany Bay to begin European settlement in Australia?

Answer: 1788

Captain James Cook sailed all the way from England (which was a long way in the 18th century; there were no planes to fly you!) and explored the Australian coastline in the 18th century. For some time after this, convicts were sent out to Australia because there was no room in the English jails.
7. What is the Aboriginal name for Ayers Rock?

Answer: Uluru

Uluru can be found in the Northern Territory. It is a sacred site for Aborigines and is a large tourist attraction.
8. What is the name of the body of water that separates Victoria and Tasmania?

Answer: Bass Strait

The Bass Strait can be ferocious at times. The Sydney to Hobart boat race goes through the strait every year.
9. Off the southeast coast of Australia (east of Tasmania) is a country that has lots of sheep, a bird called a kiwi and a very similar flag to Australia's. What country is it?

Answer: New Zealand

America is located northeast of Australia. New Zealand is Australia's closest neighbour on the east coast. England is in Europe and Antarctica is south of Australia.
10. In what Australian state would you find the city of Perth?

Answer: Western Australia

Perth is the largest city on the west coast of Australia. It is far away from the other states and capital cities. Thanks for playing my quiz, I hope you enjoyed it.
