Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'The School at the Chalet', one pupil pranked the school by smearing Vaseline on the blackboards. She then ran away from the school and tried to climb a dangerous mountain. Which pupil was this?

Answer: Grizel Cochrane

Grizel Cochrane was an unhappy pupil when she arrived at the Chalet School. Her mother had died, and her father's new wife treated her badly. As a result, she had problems settling in at the school. When she was punished for her prank, she ran away and decided to climb the Tiernjoch, a local mountain known to be dangerous. Fortunately, Joey figured out where Grizel had gone and went after her, and both were saved.
2. Thekla von Stift was the first pupil to be expelled from the Chalet School. She tried to get Joyce Linton into trouble. In which book did she first appear?

Answer: Exploits of the Chalet Girls

Thekla was Marie von Eschenau's cousin, and came from Prussia. She was a massive snob and looked down on many of the other girls, who she thought were 'beneath' her. In 'New House at the Chalet School', Thekla noticed that Joyce Linton - another problem pupil - was becoming friendly with Joey, and tried to come between them by cornering Joyce at night and telling her to stay away from Joey.

She hoped to hurt Joey by getting Joyce into trouble and getting her expelled, unaware that this would have a negative effect on Joyce's mother's health.

This was the final straw for Mademoiselle Lepattre, and she expelled Thekla for being a bad influence.
3. The second girl to be expelled from the Chalet School was Betty Wynne-Davies. Why was she expelled?

Answer: For telling a Nazi spy about an important document

Flora and Fiona McDonald were the 'Highland Twins' who appeared in the book of the same name. They lived on Erisay, a remote island which was being used as a military base. The important document in question was the Chart of Erisay, a map of the island.

After a fight with Fiona, Betty was determined to get revenge on her and steal the Chart of Erisay. Unfortunately, a Nazi spy overheard her talking about it, and coerced Betty into opening a window for him to get into the school and steal the Chart. Luckily, Joey had hidden the Chart somewhere safe.

However, the spy identified Betty as the girl who had told him about the Chart, and she was expelled.
4. This rather spoiled character had a series of books written about her. She fell out with the rest of her form after hitting another girl with a hockey stick. Who was she?

Answer: Lavender Leigh

Lavender Leigh is the main character of 'Lavender Laughs in the Chalet School'. She was the star of the 'Lavender Laughs' series, a series of geography books written by her aunt. She started at the Chalet School when her aunt was called up during the Second World War, and Dr Marilliar recommended school for the sake of Lavender's health. Lavender fell out with the rest of her form due to her arrogance and tale-telling.

When she hit Anne with a hockey stick, the rest of the form shunned her, until Biddy O'Ryan intervened. Lavender eventually began to make an effort to make friends with the other girls, and to work harder.
5. In which book did Annis Lovell steal a boat and attempt to run away from the school?

Answer: The Chalet School and the Island

Annis Lovell was a deeply troubled girl with a cruel aunt who resented having to take care of her. She was unhappy at the school and caused trouble in the hope that it would get her expelled. She was punished by being put into isolation, and decided to run away in a school boat.

Unfortunately, she lost control of the boat and had to climb a cliff to escape the tide. However, Kester Bellever, a local naturalist, found Annis and took her back to the school. At the end of the book, Annis found out that her father - whom she believed to be dead - was still alive, and he came to visit her at the school.
6. In 'The Wrong Chalet School', who did Jennifer Penrose lock in an art room?

Answer: Blossom Willoughby

Jennifer Penrose got into trouble for not pulling her weight with the class garden, and for reading a banned book ('Forever Amber' or 'Gone With The Wind', depending on which edition of 'The Wrong Chalet School' you're reading). Blossom Willoughby told Jennifer off for slacking, and Jennifer blamed Blossom for her getting into trouble.

She decided to get back at Blossom by sending her a false message that Herr Laubach wanted to see her in the art room, and then locked her in. Blossom had to escape by smashing the window. Jennifer's conscience caught up with her, and she had screaming nightmares about Blossom being cut on the glass and bleeding to death. Blossom had to visit her in the infirmary to prove that she was not actually dead.
7. Emerence Hope arrives in 'Shocks for the Chalet School', and gives the prefects and staff plenty of headaches. What nationality is she?

Answer: Australian

Emerence Hope was a spoiled brat from Australia whose rich parents let her do whatever she wanted. Her parents sent her to the Chalet School after she set fire to their summerhouse. She got off to a bad start on arriving at the school when she walked on the wrong stairs.

She also gatecrashed a prefects' meeting, and caused a flood by blocking the drains with some old clothes. She later became Margot Maynard's best friend and gave her an expensive clock as a present, which caused major friction among the triplets in 'Theodora at the Chalet School'.
8. Which pupil trashed Bride Bettany's study as an act of revenge in 'Bride Leads the Chalet School'?

Answer: Diana Skelton

Diana Skelton was originally a pupil at the other Chalet School in Tanswick, but transferred to the original Chalet School when the Tanswick one closed down. She was the daughter of a self-made man who owned a glue factory. She was disliked by other girls for putting on airs, and the prefects saw her as a bad influence. Bride Bettany, the Head Girl at the time, asked Joey for advice on how to deal with Diana. Diana was angry and vandalised Bride's study, with the help of her friend Marion, who she blackmailed into helping her.

Although she had to apologise to Bride, she ultimately remained at the school.
9. Which new girl finds herself the target of a bullying campaign by Jack Lambert?

Answer: Jane Carew

Jane Carew was an eccentric but well-meaning girl whose parents were actors. In 'Jane and the Chalet School', Jack had to move dormitories to make room for Jane. As Jack was very close to the prefect of her dormitory, Len Maynard, she became jealous of Jane and picked on her. Jack was a leader in her form and the other girls went along with her bullying of Jane.

She attacked Jane in a corridor, and got into a fight with her when Jane washed Miss Ferrars' car, which Jack considered to be 'her' job. Jack and Jane put aside their differences after getting stuck up a tree.
10. In which book does Margot Maynard nearly kill Betty Landon with a bookend?

Answer: The Chalet School Triplets

Margot was always the most difficult of the Maynard triplets. From a young age, she had problems controlling her temper, which she blamed on her 'demon'. In 'The Chalet School Triplets', Margot got toothache and was in a foul mood. Betty Landon told her to keep her voice down and Margot snapped.

She threw a bookend at Betty and it hit her on the head, knocking her out and severely injuring her. Margot was in a lot of trouble, but Miss Annersley decided not to expel her. The bookend incident wasn't the first time Margot had been in trouble - in 'Theodora and the Chalet School', she blackmailed Ted Grantley and got into a fight with her sister Len.
