Answer: Jem Russell

James 'Jem' Russell is a tuberculosis specialist who opens a sanatorium in the Tyrol, which later becomes connected with the school, and moves to the Welsh mountains. He first appears in 'The School at the Chalet', when he helps rescue Joey, Madge and Simone from a train crash.

He later encounters Joey again when she and her friends sneak out to the ice carnival in 'Jo of the Chalet School', and she falls over in front of him while he is skating. While Joey is in hospital, he gives her 'Elsie Dinsmore' books to read, and she writes fanfic of them to pass the time.

He and Madge are engaged at the end of the book, and are later married. They have six children together: David, Sybil, Josette, Aline (aka Ailie) and twins Kevin and Kester. In 'Highland Twins at the Chalet School', he becomes Sir James Russell, having received a knighthood.

He has a younger sister, Margot, who became estranged from the family when she eloped with Stephen Venables, an alcoholic waster; she and Jem are reunited in 'The New House at the Chalet School'.

Answer: Peter Chester

Peter Chester originally appears in 'The Maids of La Rochelle', the first of the 'La Rochelle' books. The series later crosses over with the 'Chalet School' series when the school moves to Guernsey and the Lucy, Chester and Ozanne families' daughters all enrol at the school. Peter knows the Temple sisters' father from his Navy days, and treated his poisoned hand.

He meets the Temple sisters when Mrs de Garis refuses to let him look at her baby, and later marries Anne. They have eight children: Beth, Paul, Nancy, twins Dickon and Robin, Barbara, Piers (who dies when he is only a month old) and Janice.

The Chester family are struggling with money in 'Janie Steps In', due to Peter's private income being embezzled by his lawyer, Mr Rennison. He and Anne are very proud and do not want Elizabeth Ozanne to pay for Beth's education.

In 'Trials for the Chalet School', he persuades Madge to allow Naomi Elton to enrol, even though she is over the age limit for new pupils.

Answer: Eugen Courvoisier

Eugen Courvoisier is a Swiss doctor who rescues Margot Maynard in 'The Chalet School Does It Again' when she falls into Lake Lucerne during a game of Tag. He joins the Sanatorium staff in 'Mary-Lou of the Chalet School'. He and Biddy O'Ryan are engaged in 'A New Mistress at the Chalet School' and they later have three children, twins Patrick and Marie, and Eugen Jean, who is born in 'The Chalet School Triplets'.

He rides a motorbike and rescues Erica Standish when she falls into a crater in 'Summer Term at the Chalet School'.

Answer: Gottfried Mensch

Gottfried Mensch is the brother of Bernhilda and Frieda Mensch, who are among the group of local girls who join the school in 'The School at the Chalet'. He is a doctor at the Sonnalpe Sanatorium, and later joins the Welsh branch and then the Swiss one.

In 'The Head Girl of the Chalet School', he is married to Gisela Marani, the school's first Head Girl, and rescues Joey Bettany and Maureen O'Sullivan when they fall into an icy lake. Gottfried and Gisela have six children, Natalie (named for his grandmother's dead daughter), Gisel, Florian (who dies as a baby and is named for Gisela's father, who dies in a concentration camp), Gretchen, Jacquetta and Toni. Like Frieda, Gottfried is a talented musician, and plays the piano and flute.

In 'The Chalet School in Exile', he and Jack Maynard help Joey, Miss Wilson and a group of girls escape across the border, and they stay at his aunt's house in Switzerland.

Answer: Phil Graves

The unfortunately named Phil Graves appears in 'Carola Storms the Chalet School', when he helps Carola and Hilary Burn rescue Signa Johanseen from Bosherton Lily Ponds. He takes them back to his house to recover, and he and Miss Burn later become engaged. They move out to South Africa, where one of his brothers lives, and then to Switzerland when the Swiss Sanatorium opens, sharing a house with the Peters family. The Graves have four children, Marjorie, Lois, Philip and Frank. Dr Graves' sister Helen is a nurse who becomes Matron of the Swiss Sanatorium.

Incidentally, there's also a Phyll Graves in the 'Chalet School' series; she is a friend of Betty Wynne-Davies' late mother, and Betty later moves in with her after being expelled in 'The Highland Twins at the Chalet School'.

Answer: Daisy Venables

Daisy Venables (later Rosomon) is one of the only female doctors in the series. She is Jem's niece and the daughter of his younger sister, Margot, and originally appears in 'The New House at the Chalet School'. Her little sister Primula is her only surviving sibling, as her three brothers all died in Australia as a result of the climate.

Her mother later dies as well after the school moves to Guernsey. As a Chalet School pupil, she is one of the group who have to flee from Nazi thugs in 'The Chalet School in Exile'.

She befriends Beth Chester and Gwensi Howell, whose brother Ernest owns the building where the school is housed when it moves to Armishire. After leaving school, she studies medicine at the University of London, becomes a paediatrician and wins several awards.

She marries her colleague Laurie Rosomon in 'Joey Goes to the Oberland'.

Answer: Jack Maynard

Jack Maynard first appears in 'The Princess of the Chalet School', where he is a doctor at the Sonnalpe Sanatorium. His sister Mollie is the Chalet School's first maths teacher. He becomes friendly with Joey Bettany while she is at school, and the two are engaged in 'The Chalet School in Exile', with Joey converting to Catholicism. Over the course of the series, they have eleven children: triplets Len, Con and Margot, Stephen, Charles, Michael, twins Felix and Felicity, Cecil, and a second set of twins, Philippa and Geoff. During the war years, Jack is a Navy doctor and Joey receives a telegram in 'The Highland Twins at the Chalet School' saying he has drowned, although this later turns out to be wrong and he has merely suffered a head injury.

He inherits Pretty Maids, the family home in the New Forest, but the Maynards donate it to the National Trust, as Joey does not want to live there. The Maynard family spend some time in Canada during the St Briavel's years, where Felix and Felicity are born. Jack later becomes head of the Swiss branch of the Sanatorium, and the Maynards move out there in 'Joey Goes to the Oberland'.

Answer: Reg Entwhistle

Reg Entwhistle first appears in 'Jo to the Rescue', one of the holiday books. He is a teenage boy who is friends with Phoebe Wychcote, and meets Joey and her friends while they are on holiday in Yorkshire with their families. He comes from a working-class background and lives with his great-aunt, Mrs Thirtle.

He wants to be a doctor, and Jack Maynard mentors him and pays for his education. He returns in 'The Chalet School Triplets' as a new doctor at the Swiss Sanatorium, and falls in love with Len Maynard in 'Adrienne and the Chalet School'.

In 'Prefects of the Chalet School',he goes missing in a storm and is taken to Freudesheim, the Maynards' home, after he is found injured. He and Len become engaged, though Len wants to finish her degree first.

In 'The Chalet Girls Grow Up', a non-canon sequel to the main series by Merryn Williams, he is abusive to Len - with whom he has five children - and abandons her for Mary-Lou Trelawney.

Answer: Frank Peters

Frank Peters is a rheumatologist who appears in 'Jo to the Rescue'. He is often described as ugly, but kind. He became interested in rheumatology after his mother died of heart trouble caused by rheumatoid arthritis, which Phoebe Wychcote also suffers with.

He is a doctor at the Welsh Sanatorium and falls in love with Phoebe while treating her. The two are married in 'The Mystery at the Chalet School', and move out to Switzerland when Dr Peters gets a job with the Swiss Sanatorium. in 'A Problem for the Chalet School', he is taking care of Joey.

The Peters share a house with Hilary and Phil Graves and adopt three children, one of whom, Lucy, is a close friend of Felicity Maynard.

Answer: Frank Marilliar

Dr Marilliar is another crossover character, who originally appears in 'Monica Comes Up Trumps'; his daughter Monica is the titular character and he also has a son, Barnabas. He collects antique furniture. His nieces, Vicky and Alixe McNab, live with him, and their younger siblings also move in after their parents are killed in a thunderstorm. Dr Marilliar is a paediatrician and examines Lavender Leigh in 'Lavender Laughs in the Chalet School', and tells her aunt that Lavender needs to start school and have more routine in her life, as constant travelling is making her ill.

He recommends the Chalet School, as Monica and the McNab girls are pupils there, having transferred after their old school closes down.
