Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the first person identified as the Chalet School's games mistress in the Tirol years?

Answer: Miss Durrant

As well as games, Miss Marjorie Durrant also teaches country and folk dancing, and gives the girls a session in 'Jo of the Chalet School'. She has played hockey for her county, and coaches the girls with cricket. During the war years, she returns to the school to teach. By then, she is a widow, her husband having died at sea, and has also lost her young daughter in an air raid.
2. One of the prefect positions in the Chalet School is Games Prefect, which involves organising matches and coaching games, amongst other things. Which of the four Quartette members is Games Prefect during Joey Bettany's tenure as Head Girl?

Answer: Marie von Eschenau

Marie is excellent at rowing and plays a mean game of cricket, and also plays tennis. Unlike Grizel Cochrane, her predecessor, she is very patient. She captains the Chalet School in a boat race against their rivals, St Scholastika's, in 'The Chalet School and Jo'.
3. How does Lavender Leigh injure Anne Montague in a games class in 'Lavender Laughs in the Chalet School'?

Answer: She hits her with a hockey stick

Lavender is having a difficult games lesson and is continually corrected by Monica Marilliar, the Games Prefect, while playing hockey. Judy Willoughby accidentally hurts Lavender's leg when she throws a hockey ball, and when Lavender cries and complains, Monica brushes her off. Lavender eventually loses her temper and hits Anne Montague over the hand with her stick, saying, "Now who's a baby crying for a knock?" Lavender's form are so angered by this that they refuse to speak to her for a week.
4. The Chalet School moves to the fictional island of St Briavel's in 'The Chalet School and the Island'. With which new pieces of sporting equipment does Joey Maynard present the school in the book?

Answer: Rowboats

Because of the island location, the school is able to hold swimming and rowing lessons in nearby Kittiwake Cove, where Joey introduces the new boats. There are five in total, one for each school House. The five boats are contributed by Joey and Jack, the Chester, Lucy and Ozanne families, a group of Old Girls, Madge and Jem Russell, and Gwensi and Ernest Howell. Annis Lovell later steals St Hild's boat in an attempt to run away.
5. In 'The Chalet School and Rosalie', new girl Rosalie Way is given the choice of cricket or tennis. Why does she opt for cricket, despite being better at tennis?

Answer: Tom Gay plays cricket and she wants to be with Tom

To the surprise of Miss Burn, the games mistress, Rosalie is insistent on playing cricket, claiming she prefers the game. Her real reason for choosing cricket, despite not being very good at it, is because she has a rather large crush on Tom. Tom is not a sentimental person and finds Rosalie's behaviour very hard to deal with.
6. Tennis plays a major part in the plot of 'The Wrong Chalet School', and the new girl, Katherine Gordon, is an excellent tennis player who helps the school win an inter-schools tennis match. She takes the place of Blossom Willoughby - but why did Blossom miss the match in the first place?

Answer: Jennifer Penrose locked her in the art room

Jennifer Penrose is angry with Blossom for calling her out on her laziness when she and a group of friends are sitting around reading 'Gone with the Wind' ('Forever Amber' in some editions), rather than gardening. In revenge, she tricks little Janice Chester into sending Blossom a message saying Herr Laubach, the art master, wants to see her in the art room, and locks Blossom in. Blossom manages to get out by smashing a window, but in the meantim, Nita Eltringham has broken her collarbone and, as Blossom is not around to take her place, Katherine is brought on instead. Luckily, the Chalet School wins the match.
7. Loveday Perowne and her fellow prefects organise a Games Committee in 'Shocks for the Chalet School', rather than having a Games Prefect, as the best candidate for the job has dropped out. Her stepmother has died and she has to return home to take care of her father. Which girl is this?

Answer: Elfie Woodward

Elfie Woodward is a keen sportswoman, to the point where she dresses up as 'Sport' for a fancy dress evening in an outfit made of various bits of sports equipment, and wants to train as a games mistress. However, much to Bride's dismay, she is forced to leave the Chalet School when her stepmother dies and her father needs her at home, as he is unable to take care of himself. Later, a relative agrees to help the Woodward family out so that Elfie can go back to school and rejoin her friends.
8. In the Switzerland years, winter sports are popular, especially skiing and tobogganing. Which girl suffers a severe head injury as the result of a tobogganing incident?

Answer: Mary-Lou Trelawney

This happens in 'Mary-Lou of the Chalet School'. Emerence Hope and Margot Maynard are tobogganing, and Emerence insists on riding down from the top of the hill, even though Miss O'Ryan has warned them not to as a tree has come down. Margot has an attack of conscience and refuses to join in, despite Emerence's taunting.

As Emerence toboggans down the hill, Mary-Lou runs to warn her about the tree, and the toboggan collides with the tree, throwing Emerence into Mary-Lou and slamming Mary-Lou's head into a tree.

She is hospitalised, and is unconscious for a while, but later recovers and forgives Emerence. As an aside, she has to have her head shaved, and her formerly straight hair grows back curly.
9. Which sport does Ruey Richardson reintroduce to the school in 'Ruey Richardson: Chaletian'?

Answer: Lacrosse

The Chalet School gave up lacrosse after Mary-Lou's injury, and because of a lack of players, but Ruey is a keen lacrosse player and gets other girls in her form interested in playing it. Gwen Parry, who is Games Prefect at the time, overheards Ruey and her friends talking about it and suggests reviving the lacrosse, and Miss Annersley agrees as long as there is enough enthusiasm for it, and enough people to make up at least two teams.

Some of the teachers, including Miss Ferrars and Miss Burnett, also volunteer to help with the lacrosse coaching. Ruey teaches the girls in her form about positions and how to hold crosses, and a match is organised featuring two teams made up of girls from the main school and girls from St Mildred's, the finishing branch.
10. Motorboats feature in the 'Chalet School' books from time to time. Which teacher jumps from a rowboat to an out-of-control speedboat in 'Althea Joins the Chalet School'?

Answer: Miss Ferrars

Miss Ferrars has a James Bond-esque moment during a rowing lesson with Flavia Ansell, Sam Davies, Althea Glenyon and Val Pertwee, when she jumps into a speedboat to stop it crashing. The speedboat is being piloted by two boys who have escaped from their hotel, and is out of control. Miss Ferrars manages to gain control of it until a lake official is able to board the speedboat and stop it.

It later transpires that the boys' father had hired the speedboat.
