Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do players call the area where relief pitchers practice before playing a game?

Answer: bullpen

The bullpen is a separate area from the dugout. Bullpens are often located behind the outfield fence. Some Major League teams have their bullpens in the foul territory. No one is exactly sure why it is called the bullpen although there are plenty of theories.
2. Which strong center-fielder for the New York Yankees was known as Joltin' Joe?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

Joe DiMaggio was a powerhouse player. In the summer of 1941 he had a record-breaking hitting streak of 56 games, an amazing feat then and now. He played for the Yankees his entire career. In 1952 his #5 was retired.
3. Which four defense positions are often considered to be the most difficult, but are the most important to having a strong team?

Answer: catcher, shortstop, second base, center field

Sometimes those four positions are called "up the middle" because that's exactly where they are positioned on the ball field. These positions can make or break a team.
4. The best pitchers are not always the best hitters. In the American League, what is the term used for a player who only hits in place of the pitcher but does not play defense?

Answer: designated hitter

The idea for a designated hitter came about in the 1970s when the owner of the Oakland Athletics decided to change the rules of baseball by having the pitcher replaced at bat by a proven hitter. This change still stands in the American League.
5. Where is the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum located?

Answer: Cooperstown, New York

Every summer thousands of fans come to Cooperstown to take part in the baseball tournaments held there. The tournaments are played at Doubleday Field which is named for Abner Doubleday who, for many years, was wrongly credited with inventing baseball.
6. What word is used to describe a left-handed pitcher?

Answer: southpaw

The term "southpaw" did not originate with baseball. It was first used before baseball even existed. One reference dates back to 1813 when the word was used in a Philadelphia newspaper. The term also appeared in a 1848 political cartoon.
7. This outfielder is known as "Junior" or "The Kid." Ranking #6 on the all time HR list, who is this great ballplayer?

Answer: Ken Griffey Jr.

Ken's father, Kenneth Griffey Senior, played baseball himself for the Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, and New York Yankees. Ken Jr. was first drafted by the Mariners. Besides the Mariners, he has played for the White Sox and Reds. In January 2016 Ken Griffey Jr. was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
8. Which team did Babe Ruth play for before he was sold to the New York Yankees?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Ruth, a left-handed pitcher, helped the Red Sox win three World Series Championships. He was sometimes called "the Bambino." After the owner of the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees, the Red Sox stopped winning the World Series. This caused many to think that selling "the Bambino" to the Yankees brought a curse to the Red Sox. That's where "Curse of the Bambino" comes from.
9. Which award is given to the most outstanding pitcher in each league in the US?

Answer: Cy Young

Denton (cy) Young was a Major League pitcher who began his baseball career playing for the Cleveland Spiders in the late 19th century. Over a century has passed and he still holds the record for the most career innings pitched.
10. Which outfielder was known as "Shoeless Joe"?

Answer: Joseph Jackson

Jackson acquired his nickname because he once hit a triple and ran in only his socks because his new shoes were hurting his feet. Jackson's baseball career changed forever when he was accused of being involved with the White Sox Scandal of 1919 when the White Sox purposely lost to the Cincinnati Reds.
