Let's Start With an Easy One! For Kids Quiz

When I was a kid one of the things I loved to do was play sports. Back then only boys could play Little League baseball. Now girls can also play and they even have their own leagues. And that's true of other sports too. Let's talk sports, OK?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do you call the first batter to come to bat in an inning in baseball?

Answer: The lead off hitter

Since he is starting (leading off) the inning, he is called the lead off hitter. That is true in every inning (and every half-inning, too).
2. In what position in the batting order does "the clean-up" hitter bat in baseball?

Answer: 4th

The "clean-up" hitter is usually the strongest hitter on the team. If he comes up with runners on base, his job is to clean off the bases by getting a hit that will score them.
3. In American Major League baseball when a batter hits a home run, how many bases does he have to step on before the run counts?

Answer: 4

If you said four, you nailed it. He has to touch first, second and third base, plus home plate.
4. When a Major League baseball player hits a home run he has to run 90 feet between each of the bases. How many total feet does he have to run?

Answer: 360

Four times 90 = 360 (because there are four bases, including the home plate), so he has a bunch of running to do. But he doesn't have to run really fast. :-)
5. At all Major League baseball games there is an inning when the people get up and stretch after sitting for a while. In what inning does this happen?

Answer: 7th

It is a tradition called "the seventh inning stretch". It takes place between the top half of the inning and the bottom half of the inning. A lot of people use this time to go to the hot dog stand too.
6. Sometimes the pitcher who starts the baseball game cannot finish it. That could be because he's getting tired, or because the other team is getting a lot of hits and scoring too many runs against him. What do you call the pitcher who comes into the game after the first pitcher leaves?

Answer: relief pitcher

A relief pitcher can come into a game any time his manager wants him to. You can use two, three, four or more relief pitchers in the same game.
The relief pitcher who comes in at the end of the game to protect a lead is called "the closer".
7. There are over 30 Major League Stadiums in the USA. Which two are the oldest?

Answer: Wrigley Field and Fenway Park

In 2013, the two oldest baseball diamonds can be found in Fenway Park in Boston, where the Red Sox play, and Wrigley Field in Chicago, where the Cubs play. Fenway Park opened April 20, 1912, and Wrigley Field had its first game April 23, 1914.
8. Now let's talk a little about American football. On what is it played?

Answer: a field or gridiron

An American football regulation pro team's field is 100 yards long and 53 yards wide.
Hockey is played on a rink.
Basketball is played on a court.
Baseball is played on a diamond.
9. Let's talk about some very talented female athletes. What sport do Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Angelique Kerber and Venus Williams play?

Answer: Tennis

They are all excellent tennis players.
Serena Williams is from the United States.
Maria Sharapova is from Russia
Angelique Kerber is from Germany.
Venus Williams is also from the United States, and is Serena's sister.
10. Now it's the men's turn. What professional sport do David Wright, Derek Jeter, Justin Verlander and Yadier Molina play?

Answer: Baseball

David Wright is a third baseman for the New York Mets.
Justin Velander is a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers.
Yadier Molina is a catcher for the Saint Louis Cardinals.
Jerek Jeter is a shortstop (on the diamond he plays between the second baseman and the third baseman).
Sometimes players change teams, so they might not always be on these teams. But their sport will always be baseball.
