Cain and Abel were the sons of Adam and Eve. Abel was a shepherd and Cain was better at farming. When both of the boys grew up, they presented a sacrifice to God. Abel brought the very best he had, a firstborn from his sheep. Cain brought things from his garden. God blessed Abel's sacrifice but rejected Cain's. Cain was super angry and jealous! God told him, "Be careful! Sin is waiting for you at the door.

However if you want to please me, you can bring a lamb just like Abel." Cain didn't listen to God and went out to the field and killed his brother in a jealous rage. Later God asked Cain where his brother Abel was. Cain said, "Am I my brother's keeper?". God knew what Cain had done and said, "Your brother's blood cries out to me. From now on, you will no longer be able to grow any food from the ground. You will be cursed." Cain had to leave his family and became known as the world's first murderer. (Genesis 4:1-10

Isaac was a miracle for his mom and dad. However one day when Isaac and Ishmael were playing, Ishmael started making fun of Isaac and Isaac's mom heard it. She was so angry she had Ishmael and his mother sent away. Abraham was very upset because he loved both his sons.

However God told him not to worry, both sons would become great leaders of great nations. God kept his promise. (Genesis 21:9-12)

Jacob and Esau's father was getting old. Before he died he wanted to bless them both, but it was more important to Esau because he was the firstborn son. He was supposed to get everything his father had. Isaac told Esau to go hunt and bring him back his favorite meal. Meanwhile, Jacob and his mother fixed a plan. Jacob's mother dressed him up in goat skin and sent him into Isaac's tent with a meal. Isaac had a gut feeling that something was wrong when he got the meal, but he couldn't see.

He knew Esau was hairy. So he felt Jacob to be sure, not realizing that it was the goat skin and not Esau's hair. Thinking it was the right person, Isaac blessed Jacob with everything that he had. Isaac and Esau were both furious when Esau returned and they realized they had been tricked. Jacob was long gone though, running to his uncle's house to escape. (Genesis 27)

Joseph had two dreams and told his brothers that it meant they would all bow down to him someday. It made his brothers really angry, especially because he was their father's favorite son. When their father gave Joseph a coat of many colors, their jealousy got the best of him.

They wanted to kill him! However Reuben came up with a plan and told them to throw Joseph in a well instead. Secretly, Reuben wanted to go back and save Joseph. However while he was gone, the other brothers sold Joseph into slavery.

They made up a story to tell their father that Joseph was killed by a wild animal. (Genesis 37)

Joseph had been treated really badly by his brothers, however he chose to help them. When they came to Egypt because there was no food, they didn't recognize Joseph because he was a great ruler. Joseph had to let them know who he was and when he did, they were afraid.

However Joseph forgave them and moved their entire family to Egypt. He ended up saving his entire family because he forgave them. (Genesis 46-50)

A law was passed that all the Hebrew babies had to be killed. Moses' mom and his sister Miriam came up with a plan to save his life. They made a basket and put him in the river. Miriam kept watch over him from a distance. When the princess found the basket, she looked inside and to her surprise there was a baby! Miriam, who was watching, came and told her that she knew a lady that could be his nurse.

When the princess told her to go get her, Miriam brought back her mom. Moses and his family were reunited and he didn't have to die. (Exodus 2)

God had told Moses to speak to Pharaoh, but Moses was afraid. Even though God had shown him signs and wonders, Moses told God he was afraid to speak. God knew Moses' brother Aaron could speak very well. So he told Moses Aaron would help him and speak to the people for him. Moses and Aaron worked together to tell the people and Pharaoh what God wanted. Eventually Pharaoh let God's people be free. (Genesis 4:13-17)

David's brothers were big, strong, and handsome. When Samuel saw them, he thought surely one of them would be a good king. However God told Samuel no, because they did not have the right heart. Samuel asked the brothers and David's dad, "Do you have any more sons?" They said, "There is one more, but he's watching sheep". Samuel told them to bring David in, who was just a boy. To his brothers and Samuel's amazement, David was the one God chose. Samuel anointed him right away to be the next king of Israel.

Jesus sent his disciples into a city to prepare the way for him. However the people did not want to listen. James and John were very upset because they loved Jesus. They asked Jesus, "Do you want us to call fire down from heaven and destroy them?" Jesus told them, "No, you do not know what you are saying. I did not come to destroy them. I am here to save them." Jesus nicknamed them the "sons of thunder". (Luke 9:53-56)
