Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As a king, I respected God. I knew the fear of God is the beginning of knowledge. What does a foolish man do, according to Proverbs 1:7?

Answer: He hates wisdom and instruction

Before I became King Solomon, I was a young man who was very scared to rule the kingdom. God appeared to me at night and told me I could have anything I wanted. I asked for wisdom! God was so pleased he gave me wisdom, riches, and everything else I didn't ask for. I learned serving God is the most important thing. I wrote in Proverbs 1:7, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." A foolish man doesn't want to hear anything God says and doesn't want to listen to anybody who tries to teach him.

This is why a foolish man will always get himself into a mess of trouble.
2. Obeying parents can be very difficult. As king, I told people it is very wise to listen to your father and mother. In Proverbs 1:9, what two objects did I compare a father and mother's teaching to?

Answer: a piece of jewelry and a garland

Proverbs 1:8-9 says, "Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. They are a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck." When you listen to your parents it will bring you honor! When I was King Solomon, if people wanted to honor someone they would bring a ring of flowers on their head and a golden metal chain to place around their neck. This let everyone around know that they had done a great deed worth rewarding. God will reward you too if you obey your parents and follow His instructions!
3. Some things are hard even for a king to understand! What does Proverbs 3:5-6 say that God will do if you trust in Him with all your heart and lean not on your own knowledge?

Answer: He will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

This means that if you trust God and go to him for direction, He will guide you. He will keep you from getting into trouble or dangerous positions. Sometimes on a road that has a lot of twists and turns, you can't see what is around the corner. However, on a straight road you can see for miles what is ahead. God will make our life like the straight road if we follow Him.

4. Uh oh! In my kingdom, I see some people spreading some words that are just not true. According to Proverbs 11:13, what do lies and gossip do?

Answer: They hurt people's confidence.

Proverbs 11:13 says, "A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret."

Another phrase I have heard is that the truth will set you free! Lies and gossip have a very high price. When the truth is found out, it is really embarrassing if you didn't tell the truth the first time. (Did your mother really look happy when you took that cookie from the cookie jar and tried to hide it behind your back?) Lies and gossip hurt others and also makes people less likely to trust us. However an honest person will have a lot of friends because their friends know that they can count on them! When they have a bad day or want advice, they know who will care about them and help them make a good decision.
5. Hard work pays off! I see some friendly people working today. According to Proverbs 10:4, what do hard working hands bring?

Answer: wealth and riches

In Proverbs 10:4 says, "Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth."

This means if you work hard, you will have a reward. When I was king, I saw many people who did not work and could not provide for their families. They did not have a lot of money for cool things, houses, or even food. However those who worked hard became rulers, leaders, rich men, and had happy families.

When you work hard it also gives you a sense of pride! Here is another way to think about it: If you study hard for that next test, you might get an A! If you make enough A's, you will have a great report card. I think mom and dad will be very happy too. However, if you don't study and make a failing grade...you and your parents will probably not be happy. If you continue not to study, eventually you will fail the class completely. That is never fun.

Another good proverb is Proverbs 22:29, "Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank."
6. As king, I saw many people that did not like to work. In Proverbs 6, which creature did I tell the lazy man to observe because it will work without being told what to do?

Answer: the ant

Proverbs 6:6-8 says "Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest."

I told the foolish man to watch the ant because it is one of the hardest working creatures that God has designed. It can carry up to 50 times its own weight. They also move an average of 50 tons of soil in one year. That is over 10,000 lbs and over 50 semi trucks. They also protect plants in exchange for food. Interestingly enough, ants don't like others being lazy. Ants will sometimes force other ants and insects to work for their colonies.
7. As a king, there were some things that got on my nerves. There are some things that God absolutely cannot stand or tolerate according to Proverbs 6:17-19. Which one of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: a grateful heart

Proverbs 6:17-19 says, "There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community."

All of these things go against God's directions and most of them break the Ten Commandments. Basically the things that God hates are a proud look (don't be a snob to others), a liar (always tell the truth!), a murderer (don't kill anybody), a heart that thinks of evil (do good things to others), people that rush into evil (they do things that they know are wrong), and people that fight (always treat others like you would like to be treated and try to keep peace with those around you).

God will always love a grateful heart that obeys him and thanks him for what He does.
8. It looks as if King Solomon's wisdom is needed again. I see two more people that are not having a good day. One man is yelling at the other for something they said. According to Proverbs 15:18, what does a patient man help calm?

Answer: an argument

Proverbs 15:18, "A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel.

Good kings know that they should think about their words before they say anything. In actuality though, it's a wise tip for everyone. Angry people can cause destruction and fights because they don't think things through. Sometimes people say things that hurt or make us really upset. However it is better to avoid an argument than to say what we feel. Feelings and words are two things that can not be easily fixed.

On the other hand, someone who is patient and does not get angry easily avoids fights. Instead of causing trouble, they help others to have peace. They also generally have a lot more friends because people are attracted to their attitudes.

The next time someone says something that may make you angry pray about it before you act. If you see your friends arguing with words, try to find a way to help. Fights are another matter. In cases like that it's wise to get an adult to help.
9. Wisdom can keep many people out of trouble as you can see. What does Proverbs 9:11-12 say will be our reward if we have wisdom?

Answer: a long life

Proverbs 9:11-12 says, "For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you;
if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer."

If you honor God, He will give you wisdom and give you a long life. Wisdom will also keep you from doing foolish things that may seem fun at the time but will hurt you later.

I may have been King Solomon, but I learned this proverb the hard way because I was a wise king that made terrible mistakes. When I chose not to serve God, God told me that he would take majority of the kingdom away from my son and give it to another. I was angry and tried to hurt anyone that I thought would rise to power. However after I died, God kept his promise and the nation split into two countries. He took away the majority of the kingdom away from my descendants. It was many years before the kingdom was fixed and became one nation again.

In Proverbs 10:27, it also says, "The fear of the Lord adds length to life,
but the years of the wicked are cut short." Many times, God has rules to protect us. Lying, cheating, and murder are only a few examples of some things that can put people in jail. Young people and adults may think drugs and dishonoring their bodies is cool, but those things can destroy our bodies and our health. Many people that use or do those things die at very young ages.
10. We are tested by experiences and as humans we have many emotions and feelings. According to Proverbs 17:3, who tests the heart?

Answer: the Lord

Proverbs 17:3 says,"The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart."

When silver or gold are used to make objects they are put through several tests of fire. The heat brings out the impurities, or the faults in the metal. It also makes it soft and flexible for the maker to work with.

God tests our heart by allowing difficulties. Life isn't always easy, even for kings. (As King Solomon, I did have my troubles.) However God is shaping and molding us to be more like Him. He wants us to have good attitudes, treat others fairly, obey our parents, and have good lives. He also loves us very much. When things seem hard (like telling the truth, obeying parents, helping others, or even studying for that major test...), remember God is there to help and wants us to have a heart like His. All you have to do is ask Him for help and the wisdom you need!
