Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The novel opens with a scene regarding the schoolyard bully and introduces us to Mr. Smith, the new substitute teacher. Mr. John Smith comes out and breaks up a fight between Duncan Dougal and who else?

Answer: Peter Thompson

We first learn things are not well after spring vacation ends for the sixth graders when John Smith - actually an alien in disguise who is studying earthlings - becomes their new teacher. Coville introduces us to Mr. Smith in a scene where he breaks up a fight between Duncan Dougal and Peter Thompson by literally lifting them high into the air, demonstrating his unusual strength.
2. Susan and the rest of the class are bummed out because John Smith is replacing their favorite teacher. What is that teacher's last name?

Answer: Schwartz

According to Coville, Ms. Schwartz is a well-loved, excellent teacher who really engages her students in the learning process and knows how to make things interesting. She is in constant conflict with Dr. Horace Bleekman, the principal, because she does things her own way.

She puts on a play every year as well, which Susan Simmons is most excited about because she wants to be an actress.
3. Susan is not happy at all about the way Mr. Smith is running the class. She writes a note to Stacey Benoit, where she rants about how she dislikes Mr. Smith. She just learned a new word from her father, and used this word to describe Mr. Smith. What is that word?

Answer: Philistine

Susan's father taught her the world "Philistine", which means a person who has no appreciation for art or beauty, according to Susan's father. Mr. Smith has changed the free nature of Ms. Schwartz's class, and is going by the very structured (and boring) educational philosophy of Dr. Bleekman.
4. Mr. Smith takes up the tests and picks up Susan's note. Susan decides to follow Mr. Smith home to see if she can get her note back. Mr. Smith goes into his house. Susan waits for Mr. Smith to come back out as he left the school papers outside, but decides to go into the house for what reason?

Answer: She hears strange noises emanating from the house.

Susan hears loud noises, like a cat put in a blender, and thinks Mr. Smith is possibly being attacked by a mysterious assailant. She went into the house, and then saw Mr. Smith sitting at a desk, peeling off his face and talking to an alien via a communication device similar to a TV. It is then she knows that Mr. Smith is an alien!
5. Susan is panicked. Mr. Smith is an alien named Broxholm. Not only is her teacher an alien, he is going to take students back with him for the aliens to study. She decides to enlist Peter Thompson to assist her, as he is the smartest kid in class and also reads a lot of science fiction. She sits down to Peter one recess period. What is the book Peter is reading?

Answer: A Princess of Mars

"A Princess of Mars" is the first novel in Edgar Rice Burroughs' famous "Barsoom" series. It is an enormously influential novel. Burroughs would go on to write ten more books in the series.

Peter Thompson initially thinks Susan is making fun of him, but Susan convinces him that Mr. Smith is an alien.
6. Eventually Peter and Susan decide they must break into Mr. Smith's house to get evidence that he is an alien. Although they do not find evidence they can use to convince others, what do they find?

Answer: A force field in the attic

Peter and Susan discover that Ms. Schwartz is held prisoner in the attic in a force field. She tells Susan and Peter that Broxholm is going to kidnap five students - the best, the worst, and the three most average.

Originally Peter Thompson hopes to find strange alien food in Broxholm's refrigerator. Unfortunately they find only cold cuts, a half empty carton of milk, and two six packs of beer.

Poot, a mysterious gelatin type animal, appears in the second novel, and is a mysterious alien goo that Duncan Dougal discovers in the refrigerator. However that is in the second novel, "My Teacher Fried My Brains", not the first novel.
7. Rumours begin circulating that Mr. Smith is an alien. What two students stage a fight in order to be knocked out of the "best student" category?

Answer: Mike and Stacey

Stacey Benoit and Mike Foran pick a fight in order to be knocked out of the running for the best overall student category. Duncan Dougal starts sucking up to Broxholm to get out of the "worst student" category.
8. Peter and Susan decide they must take photographs of an alien artifact in the house. They bring a third person with them for lookout. This person turned on the communication device accidental and saw another alien face to face. Who is this person?

Answer: Duncan Dougal

Duncan Dougal goes to live with Peter a few days in order to escape the alien scare. Susan and Peter bring Duncan with them when they go into the house to take pictures of the force field holding Ms. Schwartz. Pretty soon they hear Duncan screaming, because he had gotten bored and went into the house and turned on the communication device, showing another alien in the so-called mirror.
9. Early in the novel Coville establishes the fact that Mr. Smith hates music because it hurts his ears. In the novel's climax, Susan plays a specific instrument during the end of school activity with all the band that causes Mr. Smith so much pain that Susan forces him to unmask himself, revealing to all the children and parents in Kennituck Falls that Mr. Smith is actually an alien named Broxholm. What instrument does Susan play in the novel's climax?

Answer: Piccolo

Milton Bamwick is the band teacher of Kennituck Falls, the city that this novel takes place in. He had been waiting seven years to get his students to play "The Stars and Stripes Forever", which has an amazing piccolo solo. Susan plays the piccolo which causes Broxholm so much pain he unmasks himself, revealing him as an alien.
10. As the novel ends, Broxholm escapes and flies off in his UFO. What student goes with him?

Answer: Peter Thompson

Peter Thompson decides that his life isn't that promising in earth, and decides to travel to the stars. He helps Broxholm escape, and this escape sets up the events for the rest of the series.
